The increasing tendency towards isolation and growing estrangement in our society often results in emotional, mental and physical illness. Dance therapy helps people to rediscover themselves, thus achieving greater self-awareness and a sense of well-being. People can find their true inner self through authentic movement. They learn to love themselves and thus learn to love others. Dance therapy can be applied to all form of psychic and psychosomatic disorders. Through our own experience in movement and dance we are not only touched physically but also emotionally, mentally and spiritually. The human being makes contact with the conscious and unconscious parts of his personality, learns to accept them and to assimilate his experiences based on his personal history. Accompanying talks are of equal importance. The core of Petra Klein's work is the development of our capacity to love and build up relationships - the feeling of belonging to a joyful community. How these prerequisites are formed is made very clear through special dances with emphases on different developmental stages.

Dance Therapy
Observing movement and body language is often a good indicator of someone's emotional state. Using dance therapy, people are encouraged to express themselves confidently in a non-verbal way, responding naturally and spontaneously to rhythm. This helps them connect with their subconscious to establish stronger personal identities in an atmosphere of mutual trust. Dance therapy is often used in conjunction with physiotherapy or occupational therapy, and has been proved highly effective and popular in schools, prisons and institutions.
History
Dance therapy was developed in the United States in the 1940s and is beneficial to everyone, but especially to those with mental and physical disabilities, or victims of abuse, who find it difficult to articulate.
What to Expect
Dance therapy can be conducted on an individual basis on in a group, usually in a series of classes. Participants will first warm up before embarking on whatever physical action the music or rhythm suggests. The emphasis is on people 'doing their own thing', playacting, 'mirroring', or supporting others. The action is generally playful and unchoreographed, but some basic dance steps might be taught. Cloths, beanbags, balls and miscellaneous objects may be used. Dancing makes us feel good, and this natural, instinctive form of exercise can be harnessed to help us express our deepest feelings.

Dance/Movement Therapy
Dance is the most fundamental of the arts, involving direct expression through the body. Thus, it is an intimate and powerful medium for therapy. Based on the assumption that body and mind are interrelated, dance/movement therapy is defined by the American Dance Therapy Association as "the psychotherapeutic use of movement as a process which furthers the emotional, cognitive and physical integration of the individual." Dance/movement therapy effects changes in feelings, cognition, physical functioning, and behavior.
Dance as therapy came into existence in the 1940s, especially through the pioneering efforts of Marian Chace. Psychiatrists in Washington, D.C., found that their patients were deriving benefits from attending Chace's unique dance classes. As a result, Chace was asked to work on the back wards of St. Elizabeths Hospital with patients who had been considered too disturbed to participate in regular group activities. A non-verbal group approach was needed and dance/movement therapy met that need.
The American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) was founded in 1966 by 73 charter members in 15 states. Now, the Association has grown to nearly 1200 members in 46 states and 20 foreign countries. ADTA maintains a registry of dance/movement therapists who meet specific educational and clinical practice standards. The title "Dance Therapist Registered" (DTR) is granted to entry-level dance/movement therapists who have a master's degree which includes 700 hours of supervised clinical internship. The advanced level of registry, Academy of Dance Therapists Registered (ADTR), is awarded only after DTRs have completed 3,640 hours of supervised clinical work in an agency, institution, or special school, with additional supervision from an ADTR. In addition, as part of their written application for review by the credentials committee, applicants for ADTR must document their understanding of theory and practice.

WHAT IS DANCE/MOVEMENT THERAPY? Dance/movement therapy, a creative art therapy, is rooted in the expressive nature of dance itself. Dance is the most fundamental of the arts, involving a direct expression and experience of oneself through the body. It is a basic form of authentic communication, and as such it is an especially effective medium for therapy. Based in the belief that the body, the mind and the spirit are interconnected, dance/movement therapy is defined by the American Dance Therapy Association as "the psychotherapeutic use of movement as a process that furthers the emotional, cognitive, social and physical integration of the individual." WHAT DO DANCE/MOVEMENT THERAPISTS DO? Dance/movement therapists work with individuals of all ages, groups and families in a wide variety of settings. They focus on helping their clients improve self-esteem and body image, develop effective communication skills and relationships, expand their movement vocabulary, gain insight into patterns of behavior, as well as create new options for coping with problems. Movement is the primary medium dance/movement therapists use for observation, assessment, research, therapeutic interaction, and interventions. Dance/movement therapists work in settings that include psychiatric and rehabilitation facilities, schools, nursing homes, drug treatment centers, counseling centers, medical facilities, crisis centers, and wellness and alternative health care centers. Dance/movement therapy can be a powerful tool for stress management and the prevention of physical and mental health problems.

What Is It?

How Does It Work?

What You Can Expect
Health Benefits ... Cautions What Is It? Dance therapy (also called dance/movement therapy) is the use of choreographed or improvised movement as a way of treating social, emotional, cognitive, and physical problems. Throughout the ages, people of many cultures have used dance to express powerful emotions, tell stories, treat illness, celebrate important events, and maintain communal bonds. Dance therapy harnesses this power of movement in a therapeutic setting and uses it to promote personal growth, health, and well-being. Dance as therapy came into existence as a marriage of sorts between modern dance and psychiatry. Its was pioneered by Marian Chace (1896-1970), who studied dance in New York City before establishing her own studio in Washington, DC, in the 1930s. Because Chase's dance classes provided unique opportunities for self-expression, communication, and group interaction, psychiatrists in Washington began sending patients to her. By the mid-1940s Chase was giving lectures and demonstrations, and other professional dancers soon followed her lead, using dance to help people with an array of emotional, mental, and physical problems. It was not until 1966, when the American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) was founded, that dance therapy gained professional recognition. Today the ADTA has nearly 1,200 members in 46 states and 20 countries around the world.

What is Dance Therapy? The use of dance as a therapeutic tool is founded in the idea that body and mind are completely integrated. While the relationship between the mind and body is constantly being explored, theorised and discussed, the whole area certainly highlights the ingenuity of the creation and masterpiece in the human being.
The theory underlying dance therapy is that body movement reflects the inner state of the human, and that by moving the body within a guided therapeutic setting, a healing process begins. Emerging inner conflicts and issues from the unconscious to the consciousness of the person are addressed on all levels - physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Seeking the full integration of mind and body, and bringing harmony between all the aforementioned levels of the human being is what dance therapy is all about.

Their work gave the foundation for expressive dance where spontaneity, creativity and individuality were allowed. Many dancers who were members of these pioneers' companies began to understand the far-reaching benefits of dance as a form of personal expression. In addition, the work of Rudolf Laban was prominent in the area of movement analysis and movement expression for both the artist and everyday worker in industrial settings, respectively. Laban worked specifically with artists, enabling them to understand how their body worked to express the inner state. He likewise worked with industrial workers during the war to enhance work capacity and efficiency.
