Heckman watches. And when the session is complete, she discusses what she observed.
"Feelings come up grief, anger, loss, shame," says Heckman, MA Ed., a registered dance therapist (ADTR) in private practice in St. Louis. "When you start to move the body ... the feelings get activated, too."
For centuries, dance has been recognized as a means of expressing oneself, celebrating life, or performing ritualistic healing. Now, dance is increasingly accepted as a way to help work through one's problems. Whether someone is suffering from sexual abuse or bulimia, breast cancer or depression, advocates say dance therapy can help people gain insight into their behavior, improve their self-esteem, and provide options for coping.
"Movement is a healing force," says Vivien Marcow Speiser, PhD, ADTR, a dance therapy professor and chairwoman of the Institute for Body, Mind and Spirituality at Lesley University in Cambridge, Mass. "Everybody knows that when you move, you feel better. That's why so many people exercise and take care of their bodies."

Freeze! Try not to move anything but your eyes as you read this paragraph. What shape is your body making right now? Are you curled up? Are you stretched out, or are you lying on a sofa? Do not move! What body parts are touching? How is your head supported? Were you aware of your breathing while you were reading? Now move, change your posture. Change the way you hold yourself. Change your breath. WE ARE, IN FACT, ALWAYS MOVING.
There has always been magic in movement, but in such variety and in so many places, that it is hard to know where to start talking about it. Dancing can be seductive, enchanting, coquettish, demure, innocent or haughty there is no limit to the subtlety of this form of expression.
But what is dancing anyway it has rules, for sure. It has steps, movements of the limbs and it has logic and reason. Don't we all want to become nature itself, be the sky, the wave, the breeze at some point of time?
Dance is an intensity of spirit, a passionate compulsion. Thrown into the world of dance, amateurs gradually develop movement, incredible precision and superb grace. Rudolf Laban, encouraged running about in bare-feet improvising self-expression.

The purpose of the Code is to define responsible professional behavior for dance/movement therapists and make this known to the community at large. The ADTA defines dance/movement therapy as "the psychotherapeutic use of movement as a process which furthers the emotional and physical integration of the individual". The ethical obligations set forth in the principles below are rules of conduct governing the individual dance/movement therapist and the profession of dance/movement therapy for the purpose of protecting the public, safeguarding professional standards and fostering individual moral integrity. At this time, no state has established license structures specifically for dance/movement therapists. However, in some states dance/movement therapists may qualify for licensure under other professional titles. Members of the American Dance Therapy Association, Dance Therapists Registered and members of the Academy of Dance Therapist Registered, are advised to carefully investigate their own state license structures as a means of staying informed of professional and legal rights and obligations of therapists, as well as legal rights and requirements for private practice.

Survivor Home Email Us Moving On : reflections on a dance therapy group program for women survivors of sexual assault. by Sarah McGregor and Sue Mullane In 1997 the South Eastern Centre Against Sexual Assault (SECASA) implemented an eight week trial program (auspiced by Ausdance) introducing dance therapy to a group of young women who were survivors of sexual assault. The sessions, lead by the dance therapist provided a focus on the expression of self through movement and art. Through the women's feedback at the conclusion of the project, it was evident that they had been challenged by the movement in different ways. 'Body freedom' and 'body control' were both recognised as being positively confronting. Some noted the issues of body image and posture particularly became important to them; others were able to return to physical activity outside the therapeutic session, previously lost to them post assault. Following from this trial project a ten week pilot program was devised by the dance therapist and sexual assault counsellor, combining traditional feminist / verbal sexual assault group process with a movement medium. The program devised encompassed five phases. These were an interviewing phase, where the facilitators interviewed the women. A second phase where the women could attend two sessions to allow them a chance to experience the movement before making a formal commitment to the group. During this phase group agreements and themes were established by the group. In the third phase themes were explored over a six week period. The final phases involved an opportunity for the themes to be consolidated and for closure to take place over a two week period.

Dance Therapy?
The use of dance as a therapeutic tool is founded in the idea that body and mind are completely integrated. While the relationship between the mind and body is constantly being explored, theorised and discussed, the whole area certainly highlights the ingenuity of the creation and masterpiece in the human being.
The theory underlying dance therapy is that body movement reflects the inner state of the human, and that by moving the body within a guided therapeutic setting, a healing process begins. Emerging inner conflicts and issues from the unconscious to the consciousness of the person are addressed on all levels - physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Seeking the full integration of mind and body, and bringing harmony between all the aforementioned levels of the human being is what dance therapy is all about.

Rising Beauty
(from the performance piece "Beautiful," by Leif Tellmann, April 2001)
I went to see a performance some time ago, and was struck by the beauty of
the dancers skin as they moved their naked bodies within a large moving
structure.
It was a bit like watching clouds, and a higher compliment would be hard to
pay.
I thought,
what beautiful animals humans are
with their smooth skin and long graceful limbs.
watch the mezmerizing spektacle of clouds, and water, and wind among trees. . . and the strange human animals soaking up the sunshine drinking it in just like the daisies with their smooth skin and rising spines. I wanted to make a dance and I was afraid to make a dance so I decided to do it. for an audience of people who have seen dance and know what dance is.
