Attention: Departmental Secretary, Sub-department of Astrophysics The Department of Physics proposes to appoint a University Lecturer in Astrophysics with effect from October 1, 2002 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will be offered a Tutorial Fellowship by Keble College under arrangements described in the further particulars. The combined University and College salary will be according to age on a scale up to 41,570 UKP per annum (as at 1 March 2002). This post is part of an expansion in observational astronomy and astronomical instrumentation associated with the appointment of Professor Roger Davies to the newly created Philip Wetton Chair in Astrophysics. Applicants are expected to have an outstanding research programme focused on instrumentation for large telescopes and/or extragalactic observations that will exploit UK access to world class facilities such as Gemini and the ESO VLT. The physics program at UC Santa Cruz, which leads to the bachelor of sciences degree, prepares students for graduate work in physics, for engineering and other tech-nical positions in industry, and for careers in education upon graduation. With appropriate courses in another discipline, the physics major provides excellent preparation for advanced study in technical subjects such as astronomy, biology, chemistry, engineering, geophysics, and the philosophy of science. Some physics majors go on to medical or law school; others are admitted to outstanding graduate programs. Physics students and faculty often interact closely in both formal and informal settings. All undergraduate physics majors have the opportunity to work individually with faculty in completing the senior thesis requirement. The two main areas of physics research at UC Santa Cruz are the study of fundamental particles and interactions (high-energy physics) and the study of the properties of materials (condensed matter physics). Is cosmic star-formation history orchestrated by the collapse of dark-matter structures?
The sky at 100 microns nicked from the SWIRE team's excellent web page . The satellite SIRTF will detect maybe a million star-forming galaxies in the regions shown. This project will map out the corresponding dark-matter structures and determine - for the first time - where, when and why the star-formation occurs.
The Universe is nowadays a rather quiet and boring place, but only fairly recently (in cosmic terms) most of the galaxies were actively forming stars, and some were undergoing the intense starbursts associated with their formation. Theories suggest that the star formation history of the Universe is orchestrated by the collapse of dark-matter structures so we expect to see direct evidence that the recent switch-off of star formation is linked to the collapse under gravity of the large structures that we call clusters and superclusters. So much for theories. This projects aims to establish via direct observation whether this is true in the real Universe. This project will involve studying the link between star formation and large-scale structure in the large patches of sky to be targetted by the revolutionary SIRTF satellite. Although the satellite will launch in April 2003, we have already started work looking for the clusters and superclusters in the regions it will target. The aim of this project is to pinpoint these structures, measure their dark-matter masses via the motion of their constituent galaxies, and thus be the first astronomers to see directly how the star-formation, traced by SIRTF and by complementary techniques (such as our own radio and submillimetre observations), traces these structures.

Abstract Interim Final Report How and why do galaxies form in spirals? For the last twelve weeks we have been doing further research on spiral galaxies, theories of their formation, and gravity. Some scientists have a theory that Dark Matter has something to do with the galaxies keeping their uniform structure. What we know about Dark Matter is that we cannot detect it, and according to theory, it is spread evenly throughout the galaxies. The even distribution of matter in galaxies would explain the consistent speed of most stars and material in their galactic orbits. Some candidates for Dark Matter are dead stars, single black holes, and other debris with very little radiation. Why we can’t detect this matter is best understood this way. Imagine yourself at a rock concert. Now imagine that someone 3 rows back is whispering when the band is playing, you aren’t going to hear it. This is exactly how it is with all the radiation in the galaxies. How could we detect something with very little radiation when all around everything is bursting with radiation? Even with the presence of Dark Matter there is still the problem of spiral structures. Dark matter would follow the same rules of orbital mechanics as all the other matter so we are still missing a process to create these structures.

Research Activities
The goal of the research program of the group is to provide the understanding of fundamental physics by investigating basic properties of particle and nuclear interactions. In particular, we are trying to explore interdisciplinary areas in physics, including the frontiers among particle, nuclear, solid state and astro physics. Developments in technologies and instrumentations which are applicable to wide field of physics are also vital to our research and training program.
