Excerpts from "Conversations on Death and Dying"
"Just in case you thought there was no distinction between representation and reality there is death. Just in case you thought experience and the representation of experience melted into one another, death provides a structural principle separating the two. ... See the difference."
Regina Barreca, Writing as Voodoo: Sorcery, Hysteria, and Art What is this project about? Regina Barreca has given us a stark dichotomy. She gives us death as "separation," as "difference." But so too do we, in our various disciplines, view death "differently." Dying bridges a "no man's land" where the unfathomed and the unknowable confront the scientific and the humanistic imaginations. While death may be the vanishing point of medical knowledge and representation, it is also a point of mediation. Neither doctors nor humanists, nor artists or policy makers can provide all the answers where death is concerned; any inquiry into its cultural, scientific, and perhaps even spiritual contours must be a plural one. "Seeing the Difference" brings together three angles of perception: those of clinicians, humanists, and artists. These conceptual frameworks offer in turn different ways of understanding the dying body: the medical view of the body as literal text for implementing physical and psychological change; the humanist's view of the body as the site of complex layers of meaning to be explored through a range of interpretive strategies; and the artist's creation of the body in terms of alternative explanatory systems that may mediate between the physical and the metaphysical, that may confront an "unknowable" or "inexplicable" and give it form.

A Few Facts Surveys indicate that most cancer patients wish to remain at home in the care of their relatives. However, statistics show that in Switzerland, only 20% of all patients see their wish fulfilled. About 75% of terminal cancer patients admitted to hospitals identify burnout (or stress with relatives) as the major reason for leaving their home. The question is: how can a humanistic perspective help one cope with death and dying? 2. What Does Humanism Mean?

Living Trusts A living trust is a legal device to assist people who want to avoid some of the problems and costs involved with probate. A living trust is not for everyone. If you think a living trust may be right for you, speak with an attorney and discuss all your options. First, however, take a look at some of the living trust scams that are targeting senior consumers. Living Trust Scams Funerals When a loved one dies, grieving family members and friends often are confronted with dozens of decisions about the funeral-all of which must be made quickly and often under great emotional duress. What kind of funeral should it be? What funeral provider should you use? Should you bury or cremate the body, or donate it to science? What are you legally required to buy? What other arrangements should you plan? And, as callous as it may sound, how much is it all going to cost?

91. Death With Dignity Vermont
Information about the Vermont death With Dignity Act (2003 legislation that would legalize physician assisted dying in the state) and the Vermont death With Dignity political action organization.
http://www.deathwithdignityvermont.org
Overview
Death With Dignity Vermont is a not-for-profit political action organization based in Vermont working to effect Vermont legislation in 2003 similar to the Oregon Death with Dignity Act.
Vermont Death with Dignity legislation will:
  • Guarantee that all adult Vermonters have legal end-of-life choices Assure that mentally-competent persons who are terminally ill have the right to choose the manner and timing of death Avoid the pain of unwanted tubes and machines that merely prolong the dying process

How will the Death with Dignity Act work?
We propose that Vermont's Death with Dignity Act allow a terminally ill, mentally competent person, with a life expectancy of less than six months, to request and receive a prescription from his/her physician to hasten his/her death in a humane and dignified manner. Self-administration of such prescription may be in private or in the presence of family members, friend and/or a doctor. We believe that this should be one option along a continuum of end-of-life care that includes hospice, optimal pain management and palliative care.

Interest Group on Death and Dying
This Interest Group arose in response to medical students' concern that medical school leaves us inadequately prepared to communicate with terminally ill patients, as well as being poorly equipped emotionally to deal with matters of death and dying. This is important to us on a personal level as we face dying patients almost daily on the wards. On a professional level, we address important issues such as physician-assisted suicide and palliative care. In response to these needs, we as an interest group provide guidance, support and resources for students who wish to supplement their medical education in the area of death and dying. As co-coordinators, we act as facilitators for this learning, but the Interest Group needs your active participation to be successful! Co-Coordinator
