RESPONDING TO THE FOOD CRISIS IN SOUTHERN AFRICA
th February 2003

Southern Africa is struggling through its second major food shortage in a decade. The latest SADC Regional Food Security Emergency Assessment forecasts that the cereal harvest this year will be well below normal in areas that are already affected by food shortages. This implies that some 15,2 million people, concentrated in Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Swaziland, Malawi and Mozambique, will require food aid for a lengthy period.
The assessment notes:
The December VAC emergency food security and vulnerability assessments confirm that food aid needs are increasing much as expected, with the most severe months from January through March. Efforts to alleviate this year's food shortages by national governments, the international community and civil society have thus far averted a major crisis. However, large volumes of outstanding planned imports will be a challenge to realise in the coming months. Early indications from the current production season are that there will be equal or even greater food shortages throughout the region in the year ahead. The current crisis is a manifestation of chronic poverty and vulnerability, exacerbated by escalating HIV/AIDS prevalence. This demands integration of short-term relief efforts with a longer-term development response within a framework of essential policy reforms.

activities for the classroom Activity for the classroom: The Aid debate The aid debate focuses on emergency relief rather than longer-term development assistance; there are many debates about the latter as well. Click here for a version of the cards which can be photocopied and cut up to use in various ways. For example, the cards can be mixed together for pupils to sort into positive and negative features. Alternatively, single cards can be given out and pupils must go and find someone with a corresponding card - a positive point to match each negative one (easier if the two sets are copied onto different colours). For more in-depth work, the class can be divided into small groups; half of the groups are given sets of positive cards only, while the other half are given negative cards only. Based on these, the groups can prepare for a presentation or debate. How do their views change after hearing the other side's points?

SE Linux and Open Linux Area June 17, 2002 On June 10, 2002, the Alexis de Tocqueville Institute issued a white paper entitled "Opening the Open Source Debate." The Open Source and Free Software Communities welcome this opportunity to engage in an open, fair and frank discussion with the Washington establishment on the merits of the competing software development paradigms. With the arrival of e-Government, where important democratic institutions are increasingly being placed in cyberspace, it has become crucially important to examine the software foundations of the emerging critical information infrastructure. One need only consider the implications of secret code running e-voting machines in future elections, as an example, to realize that software is no longer just a technical or business issue, but rather has become a larger public policy matter, too. In the past, the discussion of which software methodology ought to power e-Government implementations in a democracy was reduced to rhetorical volleys of derogatory phrases like "un-American", "cancer", and most recently, "helping terrorists" by one side, countered by charges of "lobbying", "secret back-room deals" and "terrorizing government employees for speaking honestly" on the other. This is not a productive way to arrive at a nuanced policy decision when so much is at stake.

A, LA Van Gogh and Gauguin spent a few months together in Arles between late October and late December 1888. During this time the two of them painted several subjects that point up their distinct artistic styles and personalities. Divide the class into two groups. One group will study at least three works Van Gogh made during this period, and the other group will do the same for Gauguin. Students should investigate the artist's working method for the selected paintings. Have a representative for each group debate the relative merits of the artist's approach to painting and the results. Three resources for illustrations and commentary include Van Gogh in Arles, a catalogue by Ronald Pickvance published in 1984 by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Art of Paul Gauguin, an exhibition catalogue published by the National Gallery of Art in 1988; and Van Gogh Museum by Ronald de Leeuw, published in 1997. Forensics At WSU
The WSU forensics team provides an exciting way to make friends and tour the country (and learn about communication). Since the program began in 1918, Wayne State has produced hundreds of team and individual speaking champions. Our students have won the National Delta Sigma Rho-Tau Kappa Alpha Championship eight times, have placed second in the National Debate Tournament twice, placed among the top ten at the National Individual Events Tournament and have won virtually every major national debate tournament at least once. Debate and speech team activities provide students with rigorous training and opportunities to sharpen speaking and critical thinking skills. If you are a Wayne State student or are considering joining the team, read on and e-mail us soon! If you are visiting our page from another team, welcome. Take a few minutes to become better acquainted with the WSU speech team. If you are a WSU alum, welcome back. We hope these pages bring back fond memories of George Ziegelmueller and WSU forensics. The Wayne State University forensics program has established a long tradition of competition in both debate and individual events

in Sustainable Development
In this section educators and students can select from two types of activities. The first section is a list of debate topics and the second section is a collection of hands-on activities to be used in the classroom.
Debate Topics
The idea of sustainable development stems from the environmental and conservation movement of the 1970's and was largely centered on the environment. Currently, sustainability includes other questions of how resources are used, where they are taken from, who gets to use the resources, who gets to profit from the resources, and, finally, who decides all of the above. These are issues that now have legal, social, and ethical considerations. There are no easy solutions to these problems, but in the end, someone is going to be making decisions which affect everyone on Earth. Being informed is a must. Here is a chance for you to see and explore many of these delimmas. The following is a list of debate, research, or discussion questions for you to use to build your knowledge of global sustainable development issues.
See if you can come up with legal, social, and ethical issues and solutions.

The Learning Centre's October Activities: 1) THE GREAT DEBATE 98 and 2) PUMPKIN SCULPTING CONTEST (October 28th and 30th, 1998) THE GREAT DEBATE The finals of The Great Debate were held on October 28th in The Learning Centre with the serious resolution - be it resolved that Barney should be banned - being considered. Our moderator was Sabrina Ullah from Science Plus. Our first place debater Leah McRonald formerly from St. Pius X. She described the debate as "a blast!" Our second place debater was Siu Shan Yeun formerly from Macdonald High School. Leah and Siu Shan adamantly argued the position that Barney should not be banned! The semi-finals had been held October 7th with two of the contestants being Lydia El-Cherif and Bara Al-Obaidy. They argued for the affirmative that computers should not be allowed in the educational system. Here are some photos of the event, shot by Julie Chenevert. Julie is a 2nd year Business Administration student and is The Learning Centre's resident photographer. Siu Shan argues his case convincingly as moderator Sabrina listens.
