DAY ELEVEN
Lesson Overview : Students will take a look at what animals are considered pests and why. They will also look at pesticides, explore how they work and the possible angers involved in their use. Subject Focus : science, social studies, drama Objectives : The student will:
  • define a pest seek out and read about how different pesticides work debate the pros and cons of pesticide usage seek additional information from adult resources outside the classroom about pesticides take a stand for or against pesticide usage and defend that position in a debate situation.
  • Materials
    • journals encyclopedias costumes (optional)
    Procedure
  • The teacher will direct students to the web sight to complete their daily observations and begin to do the daily activity. When everyone has finished the teacher will ask the students what they know and think about pesticide usage, a chart or list can be constructed. The teacher will tell the students to be certain to ask their parents the question from the web site.

    Exploring "Heroism"
    In honor of the heroes of September 11th, students will explore the concept of "heroism" in this lesson, through personal reflection, group activities and a thoughtful analysis of Thirteen's documentary, HEROES OF GROUND ZERO. Students will use different forms of writing, various artistic media and computer software to create a group presentation on the theme of "heroism."
    Design A Community Program
    This lesson, inspired by the work of the Center for Family Life in A BROOKLYN FAMILY TALE, lets students design an innovative community program to address the needs of their community. Grappling with Identity in Latino Poetry What is the experience of being a Latino living in the United States today? Are their concerns and experiences different or similar to that of other ethnic groups? Can the experience be categorized at all? The PBS series AMERICAN FAMILY gives one perspective on this as it depicts the life and times of a fictitious Mexican-American family. There has been much else written on the subject as well. In this lesson, students explore this complex issue by looking at the demographics of the United States, and reading how this has made an impact on American media. After becoming aware of some of the issues surrounding Latinos, students read a collection of poems on the subject, written by Latino writers. In the end students reflect on what they’ve learned by creating a multimedia collage.

Activity 2 The Capitol as a Symbol ACTIVITY OBJECTIVE Students will identify reasons for studying the Georgia Capitol and visiting this symbol of Georgia government. MATERIALS AND RESOURCES STRATEGIES As the center of state government for over 100 years, the Georgia Capitol has been the scene of many historical events of local, state, and national significance. The Georgia Capitol is a place where citizens come to celebrate, to mourn, and to express their views. To help students visualize the stories which have unfolded at the Capitol, divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students and distribute a copy of Worksheet 1.1, "The People’s Building," to each group. Ask students to list examples of events which have occurred at the Capitol in each of the three categories. The textbook, field trip video from Georgia Public Broadcasting, daily newspapers (current and historic), and other resources may be provided to help students generate additional examples.     Age/Grade Appropriate Grades 7 through 10 Objectives: Use simulation to encourage rational discussion of issues related to National Parks Location Classroom Background The National Parks are designated as areas where our natural treasures are set apart and protected. However, maintaining such treasures has many implications outside of Park boundaries. Air quality in a wilderness, for example, is affected by the conditions in areas around it; animals nourished in a Park cannot always be confined to its borders; park management has considerable economic impact on neighboring communities. In recent years, there have been many instances in which conflicts have developed between Park interests and the interests of citizens on Park borders. The reintroduction of wolves and the outlawing of snowmobiles seemed especially threatening to residents near Yellowstone. The restriction of logging and oil drilling saved pristine forests at the cost of local jobs. In the Badlands, we have other challenges demanding other decisions. The issues raised in the following scenarios represent real problems which students will soon have to face as they become active participants in our national life.
