Summer institutes present strategies to help
Delaware geography teachers
Fifteen Delaware teachers are participating in the two-week residential Alliance Summer Geography Institute through July 21. The Newark campus' Department of Geography was the location for the first week of the camp, and the group moved to the Virden Center for the second week of activities. The graduate course consists of geography content lectures given by Peter Rees, geography, teaching strategies tied to the Delaware Geography Standards and field work. Neil Webster of William Penn
High School is director of the institute. Staff members include Terry Kopple, Sussex Academy Charter School; Mary Schoettinger, Star Hill Elementary School; and MaryAnna Taylor, project coordinator, Delaware Geographic Alliance. The Delaware Geographic Alliance also sponsored a Teaching Geography with Technology Institute from July 5-14 in Pearson Hall. Teachers who participated in that session learned how to use GIS software such as ArcVoyager, ArcView and Global Positioning Systems and became familiar with Internet sites that are pertinent to geography instruction. Eight Delaware teachers took part in that course, which was taught by Dawn Willis, Milford Middle School; and Jacqui Wilson, Smyrna Middle School. Technical adviser was Brent Thomas, a UD geography graduate student.

Delaware: Geography Together with eastern Maryland and Virginia, Delaware occupies the Delmarva peninsula. It is situated on the northeast portion of the peninsula, facing the Delaware River, which broadens into Delaware Bay; the bay in turn joins the Atlantic Ocean at Cape Henlopen. Delaware is sometimes called the Diamond State, in reference to its shape. With the Delaware river and bay along its entire eastern edge, no place in the narrow state is very far from water. Many small rivers flow across the state, some flowing E to the Delaware, others W across Maryland to the Chesapeake. In the north the Christina and Brandywine rivers flow into the Delaware; in the south the Nanticoke River flows SW to Chesapeake Bay. The land is low-lying, from the sand dunes in the south to the pleasant little hills on the border of Pennsylvania in the north; the average altitude is c.60 ft (18 m), and the highest point, at Centerville (NW of Wilmington and almost on the Pennsylvania border) is only 440 ft (134 m). The capital is Dover , and the only large city is Wilmington

    Geography Awareness Week 1999
    G.I.S. Day - November 19, 1999
Geography Information Systems, G.I.S., are the electronic tools geographers use to solve problems. Geographers use the layers of data to make maps and other geographic models. Community service organizations, like fire and rescue services, delivery services and even the electric company, use G.I.S. to provide their service.
Use G.I.S. to make a quick map!

Find your community on Arc data!

    * note when you connect to Arc data maps, pull down the window at the bottom of the page to choose your map...
Where is? Really neat thematic maps!

    And my town's topography's is...

ESRI, one of the co-sponsors of G.I.S. Day provides databases to users on the internet. Visit their site to learn more about geography information systems and GIS day.

Visits to all 50 states - the last during Glazier's 50th year - turns into a geography and writing project for students: postcards with messages fromNEA members from every state. Write Across Ameria Imagine receiving congratulations from Governors when you turn 50!
    - by Joel Glazier
As a delegate to NEA's RA, Glazier was able to ask colleagues from every state to help him with his students' postcard project.
Fifty ways to do some writing: stamps and postcards go together like words and letters

Getting the postcards became a problem solved. But how to get them mailed from each state? NEA members mail cards from all 50 states
I was fortunate to attend the 2002 NEA Representative Assembly held in Dallas, Texas. There would be knowledgeable teachers from all 50 states there.
Sure enough from among the 10,000 delegates attending, I was able to meet and discuss this Postcard Geography Project with colleagues from every state.
In the weeks following the NEA Convention the postcards arrived at my home at a steady pace. No two messages were alike, but all were cheerful and some teachers even crowded a geography lesson in their message.

Delaware DataMIL: A Web-Based Mapping Collaboration
The most common problem people have when creating or viewing a map is currentness of the geographic information. Data producing agencies usually maintain their databases on an as-needed or continual basis. When the real world changes, those changes are reflected in the digital database. However, by the time this database gets to the user, the information is nearly always out of date. Is it possible for the user to access this real-time database? In cases where the user may have some knowledge that can improve the existing database, is it possible for the user to get that information back to the appropriate agency? If so, how? Another prominent issue facing the geographic data user is the enormous amount of information available today. For instance, a researcher at the University of Delaware is studying population movement within the State. A quick search on the Web for transportation data reveals numerous options. Digital data of the roads in Delaware can be obtained from the Delaware Department of Transportation, U.S. Census Bureau's TIGER/Line files, United States Geological Survey (USGS) digital line graphs (DLG), or a number of private companies that charge a fee for a more accurate and current data set. How does the researcher select a data source without spending countless hours reading through metadata? Furthermore, can the researcher be sure that the roads data set will align properly with other data sets needed for the study such as local boundaries, land use areas, or water features?
