B.S. University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (atmospheric science), 1982 Brief biography: I have long had an interest in weather and climate, which probably is related to growing up on a dairy farm in southeastern Wisconsin. I completed my B.S. in Atmospheric Science in 1982, at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In addition to meteorology, I took some climatology and physical geography courses offered by the Geography Department. Those classes piqued my interest in geography, especially Donn Haglund's Arctic Winter Field Course, which that year took us to Greenland and Iceland. I decided to do graduate work in a Geography department, opting to pursue climatology rather than meteorology. I completed my graduate work in the Geography Department at the University of Delaware, receiving an M.S. in Geography in 1987 and a Ph.D. in Climatology in 1992. I joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota in January of 1992.

    Geography
Together with Eastern Shore Maryland and Virginia, Delaware occupies the Delmarva peninsula. It lies on the northeast of the peninsula, facing the Delaware River, which broadens into Delaware Bay; the bay in turn joins the Atlantic Ocean at Cape Henlopen. Delaware is sometimes called the Diamond State, a reference to its small size but relative wealth. With the Delaware River and Bay along its entire eastern edge, no place in the narrow state is far from water. Many small rivers flow across the state, some flowing E to the Delaware, others W across Maryland to the Chesapeake. In the north the Christina and Brandywine flow into the Delaware; in the south the Nanticoke flows SW to Chesapeake Bay. The land is low-lying, from sand dunes in the south to little hills on the Pennsylvania border in the north; the average elevation is c.60 ft (18 m), and the highest point, NW of Wilmington on the Pennsylvania border, is only 440 ft (134 m). The capital is Dover , and the only large city is Wilmington Sections in this article:

Delaware's Boundaries Conflicting claims of ownership between Maryland and Delaware kept Delaware's boundaries uncertain during most of the colonial period and led to highly geometric dividing lines on the north, south, and west. North Northern Boundary: The Twelve-Mile Circle The northern boundary marks the division between the two separate land grants to William Penn. It is a circle with a twelve-mile radius, with the center of the circle in the center of the town of New Castle. In 1750, the center of the circle was fixed at the coupola of the courthouse in New Castle. South Southern Boundary: The Transpeninsular Line In 1751, a line was surveyed straight across the Delmarva Peninsula beginning at what they called Cape Henelopen, which was to be the southern boundary of Delaware. The surveyors, however, actually began at Fenwick Island, fifteen miles south of what is today Cape Henelopen. West In 1760, the midpoint of the tranpeninsular line was accepted as the beginning of Delaware's western boundary with Maryland. In 1764, Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon surveyed the boundary line north from that point. Mason and Dixon also verified the transpeninsular line. The

    Abbreviation:
DE The state's name comes from its original inhabitants, the Delaware Indians (also known as the Lenni-Lenape). Delaware was the first of the original 13 states of the Union. It's often called the "First" or "Diamond State" because it was the first state in 1787 to approve the United States Constitution. William Penn acquired the land that makes up Delaware to keep his Pennsylvania colony from being landlocked. Today, Delaware is one of the most industrialized states, known for its chemical research. Lying along the Atlantic coastline, most of Delaware lies in a low, flat coastal plain. The rolling hills and valleys of the Piedmont region cover the northern tip of the state. Delaware's many freshwater lakes and ponds, its ocean beaches and its rivers and streams provide excellent swimming, boating and fishing. Cultural and historical attractions also attract visitors to the state.
