DFL Platform Search GO Full Site This Section Search Tips Welcome to the Minnesota DFL State DFL Party Chair Mike Erlandson DFL CHAIR ERLANDSON ANNOUNCES BIPARTISAN SUPPORT FOR JUNE PRIMARY, FEBRUARY CAUCUSES This Monday, Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party Chairman Mike Erlandson announced bipartisan support for legislation that would move the primary election to June and precinct caucuses to February as he stood beside Republican Governor Tim Pawlenty, DFL Senator Linda Scheid, and House Republican Representative Ron Abrams, and other legislators and party leaders. We are pleased Governor Pawlenty and Representative Abrams are putting their support behind June primaries and February caucuses. The bill, as proposed, will move the caucuses from the first Tuesday of March to the third Tuesday in February and primary elections from the second Tuesday in September to the second Tuesday in June. Sen. Scheid and Rep. Ron Abrams are authoring the respective bills in the Senate and House. Other minor election changes are in the bill and those details will be thoroughly debated by the Legislature as it moves through the process.

General Articles NBK Contents POLITICAL PARTIES A political party is a group organized to support certain policies on questions of public interest. The aim of a political party is to elect officials who will try to carry out the party's policies. The questions may range from issues of peace, war, and taxes to how people should earn a living. A large political party usually has millions of members and supporters. When people in a democracy disagree about what the government should do, each voter expresses his opinion by voting for the candidate that supports his side of the argument. How Parties Began Although parties began long ago, they have not always existed. The ancient Greeks, who were pioneers in political affairs, had no organized political parties in the modern sense. In ancient Athens all native, free, male Athenians belonged to the Assembly, the governing body of the city. Each man voted as he thought best. The Council of Five Hundred, renewed each year, carried out the wishes of the Assembly and proposed measures for their consideration. Groups in the Assembly sometimes acted together to pass a law. But they did not organize into lasting political parties. The Roman senate had two groups that were somewhat like modern political partiesthe Patricians and the Plebeians. The Patricians represented noble families. The Plebeians represented the wealthy merchants and the middle class. Although these two groups often mingled, at times they voted as factions, or parties, on particular issues that were important to the groups they represented.

Competitive political parties are widely regarded as indispensable to the proper functioning of a democratic society. The functions assigned political parties in democratic societies such as the United States and Great Britain include the nomination of candidates for the offices of government; the presentation of alternative sets of policies to cope with the major problems of the nation; the political education of the electorate by means of the ventilation of these alternatives through public debates; and the mobilization of the electorate behind one or the other of the parties, thereby securing broad popular participation in determining who shall rule. The party that wins the election is usually responsible for running the government for a specific period of time until the next election; and the parties that lose the election are responsible for organizing a loyal opposition. History of Political Parties The political party has its roots in the omnipresent struggle for power within and among human communities. As far back as history records, chiefs, tyrants, and kings and queens have ruled over tribes, cities, and nations. The rationalization for the existence of governments has usually been the necessity to provide for the common defense of the community and to ensure its domestic tranquillity. History also shows, however, that the tranquillity has often been disturbed as chieftains and tyrants have had to fight against individuals and groups plotting to seize their positions and their power under one pretext or another. The palace struggles between the "ins" and the "outs" were political party battles in a primitive form.
