Is the CARE Team a unique idea?
The CARE Team program is part of the statewide Student Assistance Program (SAP). There are SAP programs in operation in all of Pennsylvania's public school districts.
Why are Student Assistance Programs important?
The primary responsibility of a school is to educate its students. Students who are under the influence of, or dependent upon, a chemical substance, or who are coping with other significant issues, have a difficult time learning and are at risk of making decisions that are detrimental to their well-being. In addition, students experiencing such difficulties can disrupt the learning atmosphere of the school.
The CARE Team program serves as a resource for school staff, students, and parents to help identify students with problems and then provide information regarding referral, assessment, and treatment options.
How are students referred to the CARE Team?
A student who is at risk may be referred to the CARE Team in several ways. Most referrals come from the Student Support Committee which serves as a clearinghouse and review board for referrals. A student may seek help directly from the CARE Team, family, friends, school staff, and/or other concerned persons may refer a student to the team for intervention.
Referral forms are available in the school's guidance office, main office, and administrative offices or by calling the school's guidance office at 610-240-1017

UW PHARMACY SCHOOL OFFERS GUIDANCE ON ANTIBIOTIC USE
Nov. 9, 2001 University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy faculty members say the recent anthrax scare emphasizes the proper use of antibiotics and other infectious disease treatments. Pharmacist Kendra Grande, coordinator of UW's Drug Information Center, says it is important to remember that antibiotics should not be taken simply as a precautionary measure when there is no reason to believe that someone has been exposed to the bacteria that cause a particular disease. According to Grande, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) currently recommends initially treating confirmed cases of the inhaled form of anthrax with two different antibiotics. She adds that medications such as ciprofloxacin (sold under the brand name Cipro) are effective precisely because they are not widely prescribed. She says if Cipro is used unnecessarily, its effectiveness in treating infections may decline. Additionally, public health officials worry that increased demand for antibiotics in the wake of terrorist attacks, combined with the onset of the influenza season, could increase demand for, and lower the effectiveness of, these medications.

Suicide in Youth
Carol Watkins, MD According to the Surgeon General, a youth commits suicide every two hours in our country. In 1997, more adolescents died from suicide than AIDS, cancer, heart disease, birth defects and lung disease. Suicide claims more adolescents than any disease or natural cause. Adolescents now commit suicide at a higher rate than the national average of all ages. The rate of adolescent suicide in adolescent males has tripled between 1960 and 1980. Suicide rates for adolescent females have increased between two to three fold. There have been striking increases in suicidal behaviors among African American males, Native American males and children under 14. Much of the increase can be accounted for by deaths due to guns.

The Free Lance-Star
SUICIDE AND DEPRESSION have touched more lives than I ever imagined. That fact is clear from reader response to the three-part series published earlier this week. The phone calls, e-mail messages and online chats on fredericksburg .com have been surprisingly positive, and definitely heart-wrenching when people open up about their situations and those of people close to them. Among those who called was a man who attempted to kill himself years ago. "I want to thank you for the articles you've been running on suicides," he said. "I understand the pain these folks go through. I got help for it and things are OK now." The responses also show that dealing with depression before it gets to the point of suicide is on the minds of many. The prevalence of personal experience with those subjects began to emerge this spring as a group of Free Lance-Star staff members sat down to discuss how we would attempt to tell the community about what can lead to the act of taking one's own life and how such tragedies can be prevented. As we talked, colleagues shared stories of the loss of friends and loved ones, and even their own personal struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 23, 2000 Guidance counselors find support, training in academy Most Americans know little about the towns other than what those who live there wish the rest of the country would forget. All are infamous for the rash of school shootings of the late 1990s, each unwillingly serving as poster children for every cause from gun control to restoration of prayer in school. Tollerud helped to launch the Illinois School Counselors Academy (ISCA) last fall as a collaborative effort between the Regional Offices of Education, the Intermediate Service Centers, the Chicago Public Schools, the Illinois School Counselors Association, the Illinois State Board of Education and Education-to-Careers. Cathy Shelton, a counselor at Clinton High School in Clinton, Ill., first proposed the organization. Tollerud already has spoken with more than 700 educators across the state. "We have difficult situations in our schools today with the threat of violence and actual violence," Tollerud said. "Counselors should be playing key roles. They need to be trained and kept current on all these issues."

    Helping Rural Women Overcome Depression
When associate professor Emily Hauenstein talks about depression, she is not talking about the blues. She is referring to major depressive disorder (MDD), a recurrent, incapacitating illness characterized by debilitating changes in sleep patterns, appetite, mood, and memory lasting at least two weeks. It is a disease that particularly singles out women. Hauenstein was struck by the prevalence of MDD among rural women of childbearing age while working with chronically ill children at U.Va. during the 1980s. "Sick kids are a serious drain on maternal resources, and a great many of the moms were depressed," she recalls. Poverty and rural life in all its manifestationslack of health insurance, transportation, and child careconspired to prevent these women from taking advantage of the mental health services they needed. Hauenstein noted that when these women sought health care at all, they tended to use primary care settings. Accordingly, when she applied for a research demonstration grant from the National Institute of Mental Health, she made the rural community health centerand not the large regional hospitalthe point of entry for women needing treatment for MDD.

    Dr. Vikram Patel
Duration of project: June 1999-June 2000 The international 10/66 Dementia Research Network activities ( www.alz.co.uk/1066 Objectives
To develop culturally valid measures of mental health in the elderly and determine the impact of caring for dementia on family members. This project consists of two stages: the first stage involved qualitative studies on ageing and mental health in Goa. Nine focus group discussions were conducted with elders, carers and health workers. The findings showed that although families were the main carers, many elders lived alone and there were many instances of neglect and abuse. These findings have recently been published in Psychological Medicine. The second step aimed to develop culture and education fair measures of diagnosis of dementia and depression in the aged in community settings in the Konkani language and to obtain information on care arrangements and carer burden in families with elders with and without dementia and depression. This stage was conducted in the communities of Mandur and Santa Cruz. The study involved recruitment of 30 subjects with dementia, 30 with depression and 60 "normal" elders. The findings have shown clearly the enormous economic and health impact of caring for dementia. Most carers are women, particularly spouses, and caring for dementia leads many to become depressed.
