The following groups are available for students at Gaudet Middle School. If you feel your child would benefit from one of these groups, please contact his/her guidance counselor.
Bereavement Group - This group is designed to help students cope with the loss of someone they love such as a parent, grandparent, sibling, etc.
Boys or Girls Self-concept Group - These groups are designed to help students explore who they are and build a positive sense of self. Divorce Group - This group is to help students adjust to a separation or divorce between parents. Anger Management Group - This group targets students who have a tendency to explode or lose their temper on a regular basis. It helps students identify what triggers outbursts and provides coping strategies to control their anger. Safety Issues Although children in middle school often want to appear older than they are, they still need parental support and guidance. Here are some suggestions on how to keep your child safe.

Columbia University Youth Mental Health Project Launched in Fargo-Moorhead
The next time a Fargo-Moorhead school counselor or psychologist is concerned whether one of their students may need to see a child psychiatrist, they can ask a virtual psychiatrist for the answer. A revolutionary new computer program, called the Voice DISC, doesn't replace a real psychiatrist, but when you sit in front of the screen and listen to the computer ask questions in a soothing, studio recorded voice, you wonder when it might. There are roughly ten million children and adolescents in the United States with significant emotional or behavioral disorders, and six thousand child psychiatrists. That’s about one child psychiatrist per 1700 kids. At two hours per evaluation, every child psychiatrist in the country doing little else could assess these kids over the course of about two years. But in the mean time none of them would have received treatment or follow-up! Even more problematic, most kids who seriously need help aren't identified, and many who are end up not receiving services. Around 70% of youth who are actively depressed and/or thinking about suicide are not receiving treatment. By next fall, thanks to a community-wide collaboration with the Center for the Advancement of Children’s Mental Health at Columbia University, New York City, students in the Fargo-Moorhead area will have access to the Voice DISC, and a community-wide strategy to identify children and adolescents at risk and coordinate resources for intervention.

The Guidance Counsellor at FDMC is Ms Carol Land. Ms Land helps students in lots of different ways (see the description of what a guidance counsellor does on the previous page). Ms Land's office is currently in the Careers Centre, between Rms 17 and 18 in the Courtyard. There are heaps of different ways that you can make contact with her including:
    • Catching up with her at her office, the staff room, or around the college grounds. You can leave a note for her at the school office, phone the office on 7536149 Extn 842 or email her on c.land@fdmc.school.nz. You can ask a friend, parent, teacher or Dean to make an appointment with her for you. If it's something urgent you can just show up at her office without an appointment (but be aware that if she has someone with her she may not be able to see you straight away).
Hawera High School has two Guidance Counsellors, Mr John Roberts-Thomson and Mrs Ainsley Luscombe. They can help students in lots of different ways (see the summary of what a guidance counsellor does on the previous page). Their offices are located in the Dixon Block. Mr Roberts-Thomson is opposite Room 24 and Mrs Luscombe is opposite Room 18. The best way to get to see them is by leaving a message at the school office saying that you want them to give you an appointment time. You can either do this yourself or get your parents/caregiver to do it for you. They will then get back to you to let you know when they can see you.

An old saying goes, "If you don't know where you're going, any road will get you there."
As you enter and progress through high school, you'll want to make choices which help you keep going in the right direction. You'll want to choose the right fork in the road, the one which will take you where you want to go. GRADUATION - AND BEYOND
Starting out on the four years of high school, the road looks long, and you may think it will take forever to get to graduation day. You'll be surprised at how quickly the time will pass, and how much excitement and fun you can have on the way. WHERE CAN YOU GO FOR HELP?
Just as good drivers start a trip by checking a map and by knowing where they can ask for help, you'll begin your "trip" by checking a "map" and knowing where you can ask for help to get you to your destination.
People around you can be great resources, willing and able to answer your questions, to talk over your plans, to encourage your hopes and calm your fears.

To Netnews Homepage Previous Next Index ... Table of Contents Esoteric Psychology II - Chapter II - The Ray of Personality - Some Problems of Psychology Problems of Guidance, Dreams, and Depression I am dealing with these problems because of their exceeding prevalence at this time, due to the activities of various religiously or psychologically motivated groups, to the trend of certain schools, dedicated to the spread of religion or of psychology, and to the present world situation which has plunged so many sensitive people into a state of lowered spiritual vitality, accompanied usually by lowered physical vitality. This condition is widespread and based on wrong economic conditions. I am dealing with these before we take up our fourth point, 'The Diseases and Problems of Mystics', as they form an intermediate group, including many intelligent and well-intentioned citizens. The Problem of Guidance it might be of profit if I indicated anew the various schools of thought who feature "guidance" or whose methods and doctrines tend to the development of an inner attentive ear, and yet who fail to teach the distinctiveness of the sources of guidance, or to differentiate between the various sounds, voices and so-called inspired indications which that attentive ear may be trained to register. The emotionally inclined people in the Churches voices his submission, but fails to recognize that the voice is his own. He regards it as God's voice. For them, the way of [483] understanding, the recognition of the great Law of Cause and Effect (working out from life to life) and the interpretation of the problem in terms or a lesson to be mastered would spell release from negativity and blind, unintelligent acceptance. Life does not demand acquiescence and acceptance. It demands activity, the separation of the good and high values from the undesirable, the cultivation of that spirit of fight which will produce organization, understanding, and eventual emergence into a realm of useful spiritual activity.

    http://www.wcasd.k12.pa.us/district/Schools/Stetson/Resources/Guidance/help_team
Overview T oday's teenagers are often confronted with a variety of problems which interfere with their ability to succeed in school. The problems young people face include the use of controlled substances. Depression is another obstacle encountered by many young people. These students can be considered to be "at risk". Family problems involving drugs, alcohol or depression also establish barriers to a successful school experience. Recognizing that these students are "at risk", the West Chester Area School District has committed itself to a program which is intended to provide a means to identify students who are "at risk", and to afford them appropriate resources to resolve their problems. This commitment takes the form of the HELP Team. What is the HELP Team T he HELP Team (Hands Extended Long Term Prevention) is a program whose purpose is to identify students who are having problems in school because of drug or alcohol abuse (personal or family), or suffer from depression. The HELP Team is an intervention not treatment program. Students who are identified are then referred to appropriate agencies for help. The team provides the student and his or her family with information and resources to help the student understand and resolve the problem. The HELP Team is comprised of teachers, administrators, counselors, and school nurses. HELP Team members have undergone special training to work with these students. Is this a new idea?

School counselors work with all students, school staff, families, and members of the community as an integral part of the education program. School counseling programs promote school success through a focus on academic achievement, prevention and intervention activities, advocacy and social / emotional and career development. (American School Counselor Association, 1997) School counselors face the challenge of preparing students to meet the expectations of higher academic standards and to become productive and contributing members of society. School counselors are actively committed to helping students understand that the choices they make will affect their future educational and career options. The purpose of the school counseling program is to impart specific skills and learning opportunities in a proactive and preventive manner which ensures that all students can achieve success through academic, career and personal / social development experiences. In this country medical doctors and acupuncturists have spent many years testing acupuncture for substance abuse, anxiety, depression, pain and other conditions. The result of this work is the treatment we use today. Acupuncture is now used successfully for a variety of problems. Five tiny needles are placed in the ear and the client rests quietly for 45 minutes. This is a good time to relax, meditate or think about changes to be made in your life. In detoxification treatment, points in the ear correspond to specific organs including lungs, liver, kidneys and the nervous system. One of the points is for relaxation. The treatment triggers the release of natural body chemicals, including endorphins, which help reduce cravings, ease withdrawal symptoms and increase relaxation.

Premorbid and Postmorbid School Functioning in Bipolar Adolescents: Description and Suggested Academic Interventions
School Program Modifications A variety of useful school program modifications can be implemented to meet the needs of the adolescent bipolar patient. The development of these programs requires active collaboration between a student's clinician and school personnel. This requires identifying the teen's disorder to the appropriate educator-a process which requires student and/or parent (caregiver) consent, and which can, at times, be resisted by the adolescent or parents because of concerns regarding social stigmatization. Clinical experience indicates that a supportive, educational approach is usually most helpful for the development of an appropriate academic program involving the teen, parents/caregiver, clinician and school personnel. Additional support should be employed with a goal of helping the adolescent and family to understand the illness, its effect on academic performance, and the need for intervention. The latter may be gained from community-based support groups. From the outset, it is crucial that effective lines of communication be developed between the clinician and the patient's school. School-based guidance counselors can be invaluable advocates once they have an understanding and appreciation of the biological basis of the illness and its impact on the student's academic and psychosocial functioning. Educational personnel need to understand this is strictly not an issue of "bad behavior" and that behavior modification programs alone will not bring about success for the bipolar student.
