The primary goal when you are diabetic is to keep your blood glucose level as close to normal as possible. This may help to alleviate many of the long-term risks associated with diabetes, such as heart disease, nerve, kidney and eye damage. Diet plays a significant role in managing your blood glucose level but many newly diagnosed diabetics are unsure of where to begin. According to the American Diabetes Association , a good nutrition guide to use is the Diabetes Food Pyramid, which divides the food groups into six sections. Whole grains, beans, legumes and other high fiber foods are the largest group. This group comprises the bottom of the pyramid. These are the foods you should strive to eat more every day. The smallest group, consisting of fats, sweets, and alcohol, is at the top. These are the foods that should be consumed less often, and in smaller portion sizes.

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone, produced by the pancreas, that is needed to convert food, such as sugar, starches and other food components, into energy needed for daily life. When insulin does not work properly, blood glucose levels rise. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of the disease, affecting 90-95% of those with diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, the body does not create enough insulin or cells are resistant to the action of the insulin the body does make. Diet and exercise are an important part of treating type 2 diabetes, and with the advice of a health care provider, medications may also be needed for blood glucose control. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, but can be diagnosed through the early adult years. Only 5-10% of people with diabetes have type 1 diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin. People with type 1 diabetes require insulin shots.

About A monthly diabetes clinic is conducted at the Physiotherapy Department at the Lennox and Addington County General Hospital, primarily to assess for risk factors and educate on solutions. We perform footcare assessments of patients' sensation, circulation, footwear and current footcare regime. We also educate about the importance of exercise when they have diabetes. The comprehensive management of diabetes must consider the role of diet +/- medication (as discussed on DiabetesEducation.ca ), but unfortunately, exercise is often neglected from the management plan, in spite of being such an essential component. In addition, the prevention of foot problems is often neglected as well.

New guidelines emphasize blood pressure control in managing diabetes
Because hypertension, a common problem in patients with type 2 diabetes, is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality, aggressive treatment should be a priority, according to guidelines to be released Tuesday by the American College of Physicians (ACP). Specifically, clinicians treating such patients should aim for blood pressures no greater than 135/80 mm Hg, the guidelines indicate. Achieving this target "provides dramatic benefits," "Aggressive blood pressure control may be the most important factor in preventing adverse outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes," Dr. Vijan and Dr. Hayward conclude.

About Type 2 Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes in Children: Challenges and Pitfalls
Dealing with childhood diabetes is a stressful, full-time job for both parents and diabetic children. Parents, especially of young diabetic children, have to juggle their child's diabetic diet, insulin shots and sugar charts with work, school, sleepovers and vacations. Children have to deal with what they perceive as unfair restrictions ("How come he gets to eat all that ice cream and I don't?"), overprotective family members, guilt and resentment. It's not uncommon for a child to believe that their diabetes is actually some form of punishment.
No child wants to be seen as a diabetic first, and a person second. Your child's health care and diabetes control have to be tempered with patience, awareness of your child's feelings, and often a fair bit of humor. Here are a few suggestions for meeting the challenges of childhood diabetes:

Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis and Management Type 1 or Type 2?
What is diabetes? Simply put, the condition is the inability to process blood sugar. The human pancreas produces insulin, a hormone essential for the proper regulation and use of blood sugar. If the body cannot produce enough insulin, or produces insulin that does not function effectively, then diabetes is the result.
The disease is generally classified into one of two main groups. Type 1 Diabetes occurs when the body doesn't produce insulin at all. Insulin injections are usually necessary with type 1. This site discusses Type 2
What is Type 2?
Type 2, also called adult onset diabetes, occurs when the body still produces insulin, but either produces insufficient amounts or the insulin that is produced does not function properly. Type 2 is by far the most common form of the condition, affecting 90% of those with the disease.
The adult onset variant of the disease usually does not require injections, as control is usually possible through careful diet and exercise, in some cases, supported with medications.
Obesity drugs are acknowledged parts of diabetes prevention in Canada, Australia, and Europe, but recognition is slower coming in the U.S. A recent four-year study, sponsored by Roche, found that the fat-blocking anti-obesity drug

Health Mall Sponsored: Lose Lbs Naturally Heart Failure? Trouble Focusing? Childhood Diabetes: Is Diet a Major Culprit? By Laurie Barclay WebMD Medical News Reviewed By Merle Diamond, MD Email to a friend Printer-friendly version June 30, 2000 Eating more meat and dairy products has been linked to a higher rate of type 1 diabetes (also known as juvenile diabetes), and having a diet heavy in plant products especially cereals was tied to less type 1 diabetes, a recent study suggests. So does this mean that serving oatmeal instead of bacon cheeseburgers will prevent your child from getting diabetes? No, it's not that simple, experts say. Type 1 diabetes, beginning in childhood and requiring insulin for treatment, probably arises from the complex interaction of environmental influences and heredity. And the role of dietary habits may begin in infancy and even during pregnancy. However, "it is very encouraging that there appears to be a relationship between diet and diabetes, because these may be modifiable risk factors," says Robert P. Trevino, MD, who reviewed the study for WebMD. In his research as director of the Social and Health Research Center in San Antonio, he has found that nutrition and exercise may also play some role in development of type 2 diabetes, which is different from type 1 and may not require insulin treatment.

    DEALING WITH OBESITY IN CHILDREN
About 16 million Americans have diabetes, and approximately 90% of them have type 2, non insulin dependent diabetes (NIDDM). People with type 2 diabetes have insulin resistance, the inability to fully utilize their body's insulin to properly process blood glucose. Obesity and insulin resistance are closely linked the more excess weight, the greater the insulin resistance, and the harder it is to keep your blood sugars in the normal range. If you have type 2 diabetes, weight reduction is an urgent concern.
Current statistics tell us a majority of Americans (~55%, per the National Institutes of Health) are overweight or outright obese, and that more than 1/3 of America's children are overweight, some seriously. Many studies report a great increase in NIDDM among younger people, and link this to the observed 50% increase in childhood obesity in the last two decades.
Why are so many more children overweight? It is the usual diabetes answer: Diet and Exercise. One generation played outdoor games, another shuttles between television and the computer. One was never without a football, baseball, tennis racket, maybe a hockey stick... And the other, to echo a recent Canadian report, "has never been without a remote control in its hand." People don't move as much as they used to. One report states the average American child spends 24 hours a week watching television; "Time that could be spent in physical activity," according to the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

    Diabetes Prevention: The Test
Diabetes is about to become a concern for millions of middle-aged Americans who never gave it much thought before. The American Diabetes Association, backed by federal health authorities, recently called for routine screening of all Americans starting at age 45, using a simple, inexpensive test, in order to detect more cases of Type 2 diabetes earlier. This form of diabetes, previously called non-insulin dependent or adult-onset diabetes, accounts for 90 to 95% of cases of diabetes. Until now, the disease has generally been diagnosed when people develop symptoms, such as unusual thirst or frequent urination, or when people at high risk for the disease (such as those with a family history of it) are tested for it. Now blood sugar testing may become as routine as blood pressure screening.
Diabetes is a breakdown in the body's ability to utilize glucose (blood sugar) efficiently. Glucose, the main sugar into which foods are digested, can be used by our cells only in the presence of the hormone insulin. With Type 2 diabetes, the cells become resistant to the effects of insulin, and thus blood levels of glucose rise. (With Type 1, which is usually diagnosed in young people, the body virtually stops producing insulin.) The incidence of Type 2 diabetes is on the rise, largely because the U.S. population is aging and getting heavier.
