In my development greenstone site , I am currently exploring automatic metadata extraction from raw text. My publications are on a seperate Publications Page as is some of the material linked to my research group, the Text Mining Research Group I also have a page on Advogato Thesis Type Stuff My research question is ``How can novel metadata be automatically extracted, analysed and used within digital libraries ?'' My main supervisor is David Bainbridge , but I also work with Ian Witten and Sally Jo Cunningham . The introduction to my most recent progress report Metadata is used in libraries to build catalogues and manage their collections. Catalogues typically contain author, title, publication date and subject information for each document in the library's collections. There is, however, a great deal of other metadata not dealt with by these systems including: metadata related to the readers' accesses of the documents; subject area reviews and bibliographies; figures and tables within the documents; and domain specific dictionaries of terms and acronyms. By far the greatest source of metadata avaliable to libraries is the documents themselves (the ``full text''), with explicit metadata in bibliographies, tables of contents, tables of figures and indexes and implicit metadata in the structure of the text, for instance the terminology introduced and used and the other documents referred to. It is this novel, non-traditional, metadata that I intend to explore in my thesis.

These discussions progressed to planning workshops designed to develop research values and agendas and culminated in the National Science Foundation (NSF)/Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)/National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Research in Digital Libraries Initiative announced in late 1993. With the selection and funding of the six DLI projects [ http://www.cise.nsf.gov/iis/dli_home.html ], interest and activities related to digital libraries accelerated rapidly. The six DLI projects became highly visible and influential efforts, and grew in scope, participation and influence. Internet Access to Digital Libraries (First Submission Cycle: February 1, 2003) Background and Purpose The purpose of the Internet Access to Digital Libraries grant is to help health-related organizations provide their health professionals, staff, researchers, librarians and clients with access to digital health information resources and information services of the highest quality. The phrase 'digital library' refers to a collection of information, data or knowledge, stored on a computer that can be accessed over a network. Examples of digital libraries include collections of published articles and books, electronic health records, curriculum materials, multimedia documents and scientific knowledge bases. Access to a digital library may also involve access to professional library services and expertise, such as question answering, advanced searching, online training and document delivery. NLM recognizes that many health-related organizations, particularly smaller ones and those in rural and/or urban health-under-served areas, lack resources to take full advantage of the Internet's ability to facilitate informed decision making by health professionals and consumers. The National Library of Medicine (NLM) offers IADL grants to health-related institutions that wish to provide the professionals and clients of their organization with access to high-quality health information via the Internet. Objectives The Internet Access to Digital Libraries (IADL) grant enables organizations to use the Internet for access health-related information and services provided by NLM and others, to transfer files and images, and to interact by e-mail and videoconferencing with colleagues throughout the world. A request for connectivity to the Internet, or evidence that Internet connectivity is already available, is fundamental to successful grant applications in this program.

Paul Duguid ( Report of the Santa Fe Planning Workshop on Distributed Knowledge Work Environments ) describes a digital library as "an environment to bring together collections, services, and people in support of the full life cycle of creation, dissemination, use, and preservation of data, information and knowledge". Digital library research encompasses a broad range of issues associated with preserving access to digital information. For example, there are technological issues relating to: systems for resource discovery and information retrieval; the use of technical standards ; interoperability with other systems; and methods of storage and preservation. Legal issues such as intellectual property rights and licensing mean that consideration needs to be given to methods of controlling access and ensuring authenticity of information.
