Objectives:
Describe the appearance of various organs found in the earthworm. • Name the organs that make up various systems of the earthworm. Materials Safety goggles, dissecting pins, gloves, forceps lab apron, scissors, paper towel, scalpel, water, dissecting probe, preserved earthworm, hand lens, dissection tray. Purpose: In this lab, you will dissect an earthworm in order to observe the external and internal structures of earthworm anatomy. Background: Among the most familiar invertebrate animals are the earthworms, members of the phylum Annelida . The word annelida means "ringed" and refers to a series of rings or segments that make up the bodies of the members of this phylum. Internally, septa , or dividing walls, are located between the segments. There may be more than 100 segments in an adult worm. The

65. A Buddhist View On Animal Rights
A Buddhist view of using animals for research and classroom dissection. Robert A. Leopold for Heartland Sangha in Illinois, US.

Does a Dog Have
Buddha Nature?
By Robert A. Leopold
The answer to this Zen koan has always seemed obvious to me... so I guess I need to spend a lot more time on my cushion!
But what about this related question: Is a dog a sentient being? If you've ever owned a dog, and seen him happy, sad, lonely, angry, or guilty, (such as after he has gotten into the kitchen garbage can and made a mess), the answer to this is obviously 'yes.' And now, the European scientific community officially agrees with that viewpoint.
As reported in the New Scientist (June 28, 1997; page 11), and NATURE (July 3, 1997; page 11), the European Union has officially recognized that animals have feelings. So now, in Europe at least, the definition of animals (including dogs, of course), will be changed to 'sentient beings,' rather than having them classified as goods or agricultural products, when policies are formulated regarding agriculture, transport, and medical research.
In the long run, this development may have a positive impact on how humans perceive non-human animals, and help to reduce the suffering of animals. In the meantime, however, there are concrete things you can do to help reduce the suffering of our fellow sentient beings.
Every year, thousands of animals experience great suffering in the name of 'research.' It could be argued that a tiny handful of these research experiments have indeed benefited mankind. But there are countless thousands of instances of humans bringing needless suffering to bear on sentient animals. For example, many cosmetic products and household chemicals are 'tested for safety' for humans using procedures such as the infamous Draize test. In this test, the substance under investigation is put into the eye of a live, healthy rabbit, and left there. The degree to which the eye deteriorates is noted by the 'researcher,' and this data is used to determine how safe the product is for humans to use.

Any two rectilinear figures with equal area can be dissected into a finite number of pieces to form each other. This is the Wallace-Bolyai-gerwein theorem . For minimal dissections of a triangle pentagon , and octagon into a square , see Stewart (1987, pp. 169-170) and Ball and Coxeter (1987, pp. 89-91). The triangle to square dissection ( haberdasher's problem ) is particularly interesting because it can be built from hinged pieces which can be folded and unfolded to yield the two shapes (Gardner 1961; Stewart 1987, p. 169; Pappas 1989; Steinhaus 1999, pp. 3-4; Wells 1991, pp. 61-62). Laczkovich (1988) proved that the circle can be squared in a finite number of dissections ( ). Furthermore, any shape whose boundary is composed of smoothly curving pieces can be dissected into a square The situation becomes considerably more difficult moving from two dimensions to three dimensions. In general, a polyhedron cannot be dissected into other polyhedra of a specified type. A cube can be dissected into cubes , where n is any integer . In 1900, Dehn proved that not every

Scriptural Prelude
When Jesus saw the crowds he went up on the mountainside.
After he had sat down his disciples gathered around him, and he began to teach them:
How blest are the poor in spirit: the reign of God is theirs.
Blest too are the sorrowing; they shall be consoled.
Blest are the lowly; they shall inherit the land.
Blest are they who hunger and thirst for holiness;
they shall have their fill.
Blest are they who show mercy; mercy shall be theirs. Blest are the single-hearted for they shall see God. Blest too are the peacemakers; they shall be called children of God. Blest are those persecuted for holiness' sake; the reign of God is theirs. Blest are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of slander against you because of me.

How Singing Fish Work
by Jeff Tyson
Inside the Fish

Inside the Plaque

Lots More Information!
... Shop or Compare Prices Lately it seems that every time you turn around, there's a fish singing a song to you! Boogie Bass, Big Mouth Billy Bass, Rocky Rainbow Trout and other variations have become enormously popular as novelties and gag gifts. You've probably seen one at a store in the mall, at the flea market or on television. Looking deceptively like a normal stuffed fish mounted on a plaque, it is actually a robot that begins to sing and move when someone walks up to it. As the fish swings his head out from the plaque, he lip-syncs to a prerecorded 30-second clip of a popular song or spits out a savvy one-liner. For the unsuspecting viewer, a singing mounted fish can be quite a humorous surprise, which seems to be the key to its charm. Singing Bass A Note to Our International Readers If you live outside of the United States, you are probably unfamiliar with the singing fish we are discussing in this article. You may, in fact, think it is the most ridiculous thing you have ever seen! Like the Pet Rock of the early 1980s, the singing fish is a fad in true American fashion!

Neck Dissection: The Operation
Surgeons must be very careful

Stirs the culprit,-Life! Emily Dickenson
A neck dissection is an operation that is done for individuals with cancer of the head and neck. The purpose of this web page is to describe the reasons for this surgery, how it is done, and what to expect during and after the surgery.
Purpose of a neck dissection:
The purpose of a neck dissection is to remove the lymph nodes in the neck. The surgery is almost always done for individuals with certain types of head and neck cancer. (Head and neck cancer is often described as throat cancer, but it can also include cancer of the mouth, the tongue, the thyroid gland, the saliva glands, etc.) Cancer in this region can spread through the lymphatic system to adjacent lymph nodes. If there is concern that this type of spread may have occurred, a neck dissection can be done to remove the suspicious lymph nodes. There approximately 600 lymph nodes in the body, and 200 of this are located in the neck. A neck dissection is useful not only to remove the cancer, but also so that the nodes can be examined by a pathologist. If the microscopic examination by the pathologist shows extensive spread of cancer, additional treatment such as radiation therapy may be recommended. This image shows the various regions of the neck where the lymph nodes are located. The neck is typically divided into zones (zones I through VI are shown on this diagram). Research has shown that tumors tend to follow certain trends in the manner in which the spread. For example, tumors of the mouth tend to spread first to the upper neck zone ( e.g. zones I, II, and III). Tumors lower in the neck, for example laryngeal cancer, tend to spread to lower zones (zones III or IV).

Java by Dissection by Ira Pohl and Charlie McDowell Addison-Wesley ISBN 0-201-61248-8 Enlisting the best-selling dissection method, this title teaches programming techniques and presents the Java language using a sound and structured method. Working code is dissected with explanations to the student on each newly encountered programming element and idiom found in the code. The presentation assumes no programming background; both CS1 students and experienced programmers unfamiliar with Java will find a carefully structured presentation of the Java language and its key programming concepts. Features
  • Assumes no previous programming experience
  • Teaches the mainstream language features of Java 2, including AWT and threads, while remaining the appropriate length for a one-semester course on the subject
  • Executable complete programs in every chapter are explained using the classic dissection method, a structured walk-through of the code
  • Simplified Input package allows novice Java programmers to use the language early on without advanced knowledge of the language
  • Common Programming Errors, end-of-chapter review questions, exercises, and summaries, as well as an Instructor's Manual with answers, make this an ideal text from which to learn and teach the material
