Welcome to the
Distance Education Clearinghouse
The Distance Education Clearinghouse is a comprehensive and widely recognized Web site bringing together distance education information from Wisconsin, national, and international sources. New information and resources are being added to the Distance Education Clearinghouse on a continual basis. The Clearinghouse is managed and maintained by the University of Wisconsin-Extension, in cooperation with its partners and other University of Wisconsin institutions.
Journals and Readings in Distance Education
The Distance Education Clearinghouse has just updated and revised our section on Journals, Readings, Articles and Books . There is no shortage of journals and other publications on topics relating to distance education and our list includes many selected titles. Some long established publications are offered to subscribers in either print or electronic formats or both, while other publications maintain a print-only access. On the other hand, new electronic newsletters and online reports are appearing all the time in Web-based only formats; some free, some not.
Of course there are vast differences in these publications. Some journals are peer-reviewed, with members of their editorial boards representing distinguished institutions. Refereed journals are both online and in print. Other publications are more or less created by a single individual or group. These may feature articles with a particular point of view or focus. Researchers and readers will all have their favorites, depending on their needs and levels of expertise.

It promotes open learning principles, the use of quality distance education methods and the appropriate use of technology. SAIDE works closely with policy makers and providers of educational programmes to translate these approaches into practice.
The SAIDE web site aims to provide detailed information on the organization, how we work, the services we offer, and the expertise we have developed over the years. Through our information services we provide online access to our newsletters, a wealth of information in our Reading Room, which includes access to many of SAIDE's research reports, and the opportunity to browse through the SAIDE Resource Centre catalogue.
Over the years SAIDE has developed relationships with other agencies involved in distance education and has offered to host information services and online course resources from the SAIDE website. The current partners are:

    A Position Paper
    This draft paper first gives an overview of the state of art in the distance learning domain and its recent evolution. Within this frame we will discuss the educational use of WWW. Furthermore this paper examines and discusses some theorical and methodological aspects concerned by the educational use of technology. My main research interests are: mass media and communication, communication theory, pragmatics and mediated communication for distance learning. I will try to consider the WWW under those points of view too.
    Introduction
    Distance learning is changing for the following well known reasons:
    • the economical and social contexts have changed;
    • the number of unemployed workers is increasing and all they need to be retrained;
    • knowledge has became one of the most important economical forces ("forces productives");
    • knowledge is rapidly expanding and its life time becomes increasingly shorter;
