Flamingo Bingo Information ALBERTA DIVING C.A.D.A ONLINE HISTORY OF DIVING Diving characterised by plunging into water from a platform, can be traced back to 400 B.C., as depicted on Egyptian and Roman vases. Over the centuries diving from cliffs into pools was considered a death defying act and drew large crowds of spectators. The beginning of the 19th century marked the beginning of "fancy diving" with the use of rings, trapeze and platforms to perform aerial gymnastics before entering the water. At the end of the 19th century, "plunging" was an established sport with rules and structure. The gymnastic apparatus was discarded and the stout pieces of timber which were the original "boards" were transformed with the use of various springs and gadgetry into springboards. Plungers using these unpredictable boards dived into natural pools with water levels that changed with the season or even every day; conditions which made the sport extremely challenging. Canadian competitive diving has progressed from 1900, when the first high diving exhibitions at an Olympic Games were conducted by male divers, through 1984, when Sylvie Bernier won Canada's first Olympic Gold Medal. Diving is still progressing today with the development of high quality equipment, standardized rules and world class coaches. Such development of resourses is enabling the development of divers to the point that Annie Pelletier won Olympic Bronze in 1996 and Myriam Boileau (10M Platform) and Eryn Bulmer (3M Springboard) in 1997 gave Canada its first World Champions. Canada also saw, at the 2000 Olympic Games, Anne Montminy and Emilie Heymans win Olympic Silver in the 10M Synchronized Platform and Anne Montminy win individual Olympic Bronze in the 10M Platform.

In 1991 while standing at a bus stop, Sautin was stabbed so badly he almost bled to death. He spent two months in hospital and feared he would not walk again. But Sautin made a full recovery and competed in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics where he finished with a bronze medal. Four years later in Atlanta, Sautin's Olympic campaign was hampered by an agonising wrist injury. He was forced to take cortisone shots and finished a disappointing fifth on springboard before coming through to win gold on platform. Even then his health concerns were not over. After sweeping the 1998 Goodwill Games, Sautin had surgery to treat chronic back pain. The treatment eventually cost him several months of training and as a result, he didn't participate at the 1999 World Cup.

He was born in St. Pierre, Manitoba, on April 21, 1907, and was raised in Miami Beach, Florida and was a graduate of Stanford University. Desjardins was the first male diver in Olympic history (1928) to win both the 3m and Tower events. In those 1928 Olympics he received all 10s, a perfect score, in two of his 3m dives. He received four 10s and one 9 in his Back Dive, with an average of 9.2 from 10 dives. Pete Desjardins shares two titles, most U.S. Diving Nationals - 13 (with Helen Meany) and a grand slam of all available diving crowns in one year (with Earl Clark). He later turned professional and was billed as "The Little Statue from Florida," a reference to his 5'3" height. Controversy erupted in 1934 over the selections for the Canadian aquatic team for the London British Empire Games. Judith Moss (Kennedy) of Winnipeg, the then National Diving Champion, was refused a place on the team by CASA, which was then (and for many decades thereafter) dominated by Swimming officials. Not to be denied, Judith's home club, The Winnipeg Winter Club, provided the necessary funds for her to attend and compete for Canada, which she did, winning the 3 m Springboard Gold Medal!

AIS Sports History of Diving The sport of diving began in Europe in the early 1800s when Swedish and German gymnasts took their acrobatics to the beach to practise their jumps and twists over water. Diving was originally considered a diversion from gymnastics, and was only seen as a sport in its own right in the late 19th century. Diving was one of the two introductory events at the 1904 Olympic Games in St Louis. Springboard diving joined the original platform event four years later. Women's diving was slower in being accepted. It was not until 1912 that plain highdiving was included in the Olympics, and 1920 that the first women's springboard contest was conducted. Fancy high diving for women came into being in 1928 internationally. American divers have dominated Olympic competitions up until the early 1990s. Since then, China has emerged as the powerhouse in international diving. Synchronised diving made its Olympic debut at the Sydney 2000 Games marking the beginning of a new chapter in diving. Diving is often classified as an art as well as a sport. Beauty and grace must be added to feats of strength and agility while the body is moving through the air. The diver must have total body control and good kinesthetic awareness.

Flipnrip.com the first Junior diving website History of Diving by Ron O'Brien Fancy diving had its origin as far back as the 17th century in connection with the great gymnastic movement in Germany and Sweden. In the summertime, gymnasts moved their equipment to the beaches, and acrobatics over the water became a part of their activities. Diving, then, is more related to gymnastics than to swimming. However, since swimming and diving both use a water medium, they are naturally linked. Platform diving (33 feet high) achieved international notice in the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis when it was included as an event on the men's swimming program. Springboard diving was added for the 1908 Games in London. Women's diving was slower in being accepted. It was not until 1912 that plain high diving was included in the Olympics, and 1920 that the first women's springboard contest was conducted. Fancy high diving for women came into being in 1928 internationally.
