News YORK Equipment Cools Indoor Aquatic Centre in Sydney, Australia The Aquatic Centre, which opened its doors in 1994, is the first of several Olympic venues that were constructed for the 2000 Summer Olympics . It is was used by the general public before the Games, and during the Olympics it hosted the swimming, diving, synchronized swimming and water polo events. Juan Antonio Samaranch, the president of the International Olympic Committee, described the new Sydney International Aquatic Centre as the "best swimming pool I have ever seen." It's easy to understand why Samaranch, as well as countless Australians, are excited about the Aquatic Centre. The $380 million facility is one of the largest indoor complexes of its kind in the world. And it features an innovative HVAC system driven by a central plant supplied by YORK International Australia that cools both the large spectator seating area and the main competition area below. "The HVAC system is unique because it involves creating a personal comfort envelope around each spectator rather than air-conditioning the entire main-pool enclosure," said Mark Ganley, general manager, sales and production, YORK Australia. "There is a significant temperature gradient between the spectator and pool areas."

China Gets Two More Titles in Diving and Taekwondo, Gold Tally Rises to 28
Chen Zhong Wins Women's 67kg Taekwondo Gold Medal China put the last diving gold and silver in the 27th Olympic Games in its bag on Saturday in Sydney, when Tian Liang and Hu Jia swept aside defending champion Dmitri Saoutine of Russia and other rivals in the final.
The gold, the fifth China grabbed during the Games, made China's gold tally at the medal tally up to 28, a new record in Chinese Olympic history. China obtained 16 golds at both the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta games.
Minutes before the diving final, Chen Zhong outperformed Matalia Ivalova of Russia 8-3 in the women's over 67 kg taekwondo final. Twenty-one-year-old Tian Liang totalled 724.53 points from the semi-final and final, as compared to the silver medallist Hu Jia's 713.55 points, and the bronze medellist Saoutine's 679.26 points. Tian Liang Wins Men's Platform Gold The Chinese have collected 10 diving medals, five of them gold. China's ability to claim five of the eight golds on offer has once more proved the country's dominating superiority in the diving sport.

Fu Mingxia, the Diving Quee n Since the first she jumped in the water Fu Mingxia had a love for diving and has become a famous diver with her achievements being recognized recently by the country. But it was a big surprise to Fu Mingxia when she heard she was selected as one of China's "Ten Outstanding Young People." This brilliant diver, who always seems to have a bright smile on her face, has won a long list of honors and broke several records over the past 22 years of her life. Fu Mingxia started her career with a big splash of course."I began to practice diving at the age of nine. I still remember the first time I stood on top of the 10-meter-platform," she said. "It was so high above the water! But we had a professional rule: a diver must leave the platform from the front, that means you have to dive. A diver can never descend by the stairs at the rear of the platform. So I jumped. I was scared to death. My heart was about to come out of my body. But I did it." Down she went, and her career rose to the top like a bubble of air. Only three years later, at the 1990 Friendship Games in the United States, she won her first international title. The following year, she became the youngest world champion ever, age 13, after she collected another crown at the 1991 World Championships.

September 28, 2000 PROFILE: Anne Montminy Canadians win silver in synchronized diving
SYDNEY (CP) Disappointment spurred Anne Montminy and Emilie Heymans to a silver medal Thursday, Canada's first in the new Olympic event of synchronized diving. Montminy, 25, who won a bronze in the individual event on Sunday, wanted a medal of a different colour. Heymans, who was within striking distance of a medal in the individual, had missed a dive and knocked her out of medal contention to fifth place. Heymans hugged Montminy after the individual platform and told her she wanted a medal in synchronized diving and Montminy replied "We'll get one."

Louganis: Tapping his potential
G reg Louganis began tapping his athletic potential as a small boy. By the time he retired from Olympic competition two decades later, his name was synonymous with diving excellence. Greg Louganis won five Olympic medals in his career four of them gold. Louganis was adopted a few months after he was born in 1960, and he quickly showed an abundance of athletic ability. His parents had him taking dance lessons with his sister, as well as diving and gymnastics lessons in part to help battle childhood asthma. The lessons not only helped with the youngster's asthma, but they also spawned one of the greatest Olympic careers in history. Louganis was coveted by diving coaches nationwide before he was a teen-ager. Dr. Sammy Lee, an Olympic gold medalist in his own right, volunteered to be his coach in exchange for Louganis cleaning his pool. The combination immediately paid dividends while he was still in high school, Louganis competed in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal and won a silver medal in the platform competition. Only a poor second-to-last dive allowed Italian Klaus Dibiasi to win his third straight gold medal. The U.S. boycott of the 1980 Moscow Games kept Louganis from competing there, but he was fast building a reputation as the best diver in the world. He won three world championships between 1976 and '84.

Diving Veterans Ready for More Gold
Though their younger teammates had already tagged themselves as serious gold contenders, Xiong Ni and Fu Mingxia, the reigning Olympic champions on China's diving team, are very likely to continue their glory in Sydney this fall, according to Chinadaily.
In a warm-up from August 13 to 15 in Jinan, the two multi-time Olympians, together had contributed four Olympic gold medals to China,out-performed their team members to win their individual and synchronized events.
The simulated Olympic contest tests the Olympic diving team and forms the final line-up for Sydney. Atlanta Olympics springboard champion Xiong found his best form since he came back two years ago, staging a flawless routine including two of his most difficult dives ever. The Chinese camp said repeating this show in Sydney, Xiong could get a mark higher than 750 points, enough to defend his title in his fourth Olympics.

Patricia Keller McCormick is one of those larger-than-life Olympic athletes. She is the first and only woman in history to win a “double-double” - two gold medals in two consecutive Olympic Games. But it doesn’t stop there. Pat’s fame afforded her many opportunities and she used that fame to give back to her community. Pat McCormick is involved with many charities and is well-known for her work among disadvantaged youth. She is founder of “Pat’s Champs”, a work involving children labeled “high risk” by educators. Most of these kids come from broken homes where the parents have substance abuse problems. Pat works with these kids, helping them find a way out of their dead-end existence.

A Tribute to Glenn P. McCormick
December 31, 1925 - October 21, 1995 By DAVID COTTON We were all stunned when we learned of Glenn's sudden passing, the cause believed to be an earlier treated skin cancer that metastasized to the brain. He was such a wonderful father, coach and friend to so many people. An inductee to the International Swimming Hall of Fame last May, he will sorely be missed but never forgotten. A memorial service held Nov. 19 was attended by over 400 people. The sign-in book, which contained the names of 13 Olympians, read like the Who's Who of Diving. The mood was that of a somber celebration of life, a coming of age. Here's some history: Glenn was born in Elgin, III., into the family of parents Paul and Hazel McCormick and sister Lila, three years older. Glenn's father worked as a watchmaker at the Elgin Watch Co. in the post-Depression era. Always interested in sports, young Glenn was challenged by severe asthma until his mid-teens. In the summers, Glenn would often be found tinkering with his Model A Ford or at the local pool playing on the diving boards. In his freshman year of high school, he lettered in football and basketball but found his real niche was in wrestling, in which he made the first team as a sophomore
