Tim Cahill chats about the IMAX film "Dolphins"
March 14, 2000

Web posted at: 5:00 p.m. EDT
(CNN) Founding editor of "Outside" Magazine and best-selling author Tim Cahill joined Nature chat on Monday, March 13, 2000 to discuss his new project, an IMAX film entitled, "Dolphins." He is also the author of "National Geographic's Dolphins," a book, written in conjunction with the IMAX production. Both projects use science and breathtaking photography to tell the story of marine biologist Kathleen Dudzinski and her work researching the communication habits of wild dolphins. Mr. Cahill participated in the chat at the CNN.com studio. A typist was provided for him. The following is an edited transcript of the chat. Chat Moderator: Thank you for joining us today, Tim Cahill, and welcome!

1101 14th Street NW Suite 1400 Washington DC 20005 The "dolphin-safe" tuna label was established in 1990 to protect dolphins from tuna fishermen who chase, harass, encircle, capture, harm and even kill dolphins. It ensured that any tuna caught by intentionally netting dolphins could not be labeled "dolphin-safe" and sold in the United States. Between the late 1950's and the implementation of "dolphin-safe" labeling, more than 7 million dolphins died in tuna nets. Since the advent of the "dolphin-safe" labeling program, dolphin deaths have decreased by 97%but the already-depleted dolphin population will likely not survive any loosening of standards. The Secretary's finding about "dolphin-safe" labeling should be based on scientific findings. But unless he hears from thousands of Americans like you, the politics of trade are likely to win over conservation and the lives of millions of dolphins.

Whales and Dophins
Whales and Dolphins are marine animals. They live in oceans around the world. Whales and Dolphins come from the same family, CETACEA (sey-tay-sha) . They both breath from a blowhole located at the top of their head. Whales and dolpins are mammals. They are mammals because they have lungs not gills, they have hair not scales , and they also have give live birth and don't lay eggs. There are only about 80 kinds of whales and dolphins that we know of right now.
Whales
Whales are very large animals. They can grow up to 100 ft. or more in length. They can weigh up to 200 tons or more. Whales live in families called pods. These pods vary in numbers and consist of family members and family friends. Whales live in these families their whole life. Group living is safer when other whales or sharks attack. It also makes it easier to find food. Whales are always migrating. They travel to find food, breed and have young. Whales do not have eyelids. They rely on thick oily tears to protect their eyes. Whales hear from little holes behind their eyes. Whales talk to each other by making high pitched sounds like whistles, clicks, squeaks, rattles, and groans.

Order Cetacea
Whales, Dolphins, and Porpoises
This order of wholly aquatic mammals occurs in all the oceans and adjoining seas of the world, as well as in certain lakes and river systems. Living cetaceans are traditionally divided into two suborders: the Odontoceti, individuals of which have teeth (generally all of one kind) and an asymmetrical skull and which comprise the families Iniidae, Lipotidae, Pontoporiidae, Platanistidae, Delphinidae, Phocoenidae, Monodontidae, Ziphiidae, and Physeteridae; and the Mysticeti, individuals of which have plates of baleen, instead of teeth, and a symmetrical skull and which comprise the families Eschrichtidae, Balaenopteridae, Balaenidae, and Neobalaenidae. Rice 1984) considered the Odontoceti and the Mysticeti to be distinct orders, because it is questionable whether the two groups had a common origin and because the differences between them are as great as those between some of the universally recognized orders of mammals. Certain authorities, such as Ellis 1980), have followed Rice's procedure. Gaskin 1976), however, summarized data supporting a monophyletic origin for cetaceans and treated the Odontoceti and Mysticeti as suborders. The latter procedure also is supported by new cytological data (

Above: One of the evolved dolphins, whose opposable thumbs have struck fear in the hearts of humankind. "I believe I speak for the entire human race when I say, 'Holy fuck,'" said Oceanographic Institute director Dr. James Aoki, noting that the dolphin has a cranial capacity 40 percent greater than that of humans. "That's it for us monkeys." Aoki strongly urged humans, especially those living near the sea, to learn to communicate using a system of clicks and whistles in a frequency range of 4 to 150 kHz. He also encouraged humans to "start practicing their echolocation as soon as possible." Delphinologists have reported more than 7,000 cases of spontaneous opposable-digit manifestation in the past two weeks alone, with "thumbs" observed on the bottle-nosed dolphin, the Atlantic humpback dolphin, and even the rare Ganges River dolphin. "It appears to be species-wide," said dolphin specialist Clifford Brees of the Kewalo Basin Marine Mammal Laboratory, speaking from the shark cage he welded shut around himself late Monday. "And it may be even worse: We haven't exactly been eager to check for thumbs on other marine mammals belonging to the order of cetaceans, such as the killer whale. Oh, Christ, we're really in the soup now." Above: A primitive axe crafted out of driftwood and shell that is believed to be the handiwork of dolphins.

DOLPHINS I. BIOLOGY AND NATURAL HISTORY
All dolphins are toothed whales belonging to the sub-order, odontocetes , of the order cetacea (see section on humpback whales for more information). As a group, dolphins are often referred to as "small" cetaceans, even though some of them are quite large, attaining lengths of over 20 feet. In addition, although the terms dolphins and porpoises are often used interchangeably, they really refer to two different types of animals.
Porpoises belong to the family Phocoenidae . They are generally smaller and more robust species. Most attain about 5-7 feet in length. Porpoises have no distinct beak, or rostrum . Their foreheads slope almost uniformly to the tip of their snout, and their teeth are spade-like in shape. The family Phocoenidae is rather small, and consists of only six members. There are no porpoises found in Hawaiian waters.
Dolphins belong to the family Delphinidae . Dolphins possess a distinct beak. Their teeth are conical in shape. Most species of dolphins are larger than porpoises, with the males usually being larger than the females. The family Delphinidae is the largest and most diverse family of the cetacean order and includes 26 living species. Several species of dolphins are found in Hawaiian waters.

    Free Agency Period Opens
The Dolphins began the 2003 free agency period earlier this week by re-signing Mark Dixon and Rob Konrad. Both players would have been unrestricted free agents today if the Dolphins hadn't acted, but Rick Spielman and the Dolphin personnel department retained their services. On the other hand, the Dolphins cut WR Dedric Ward and LB Twan Russell earlier this week to get themselves under the salary cap. Rumors have it that Miami will spend a lot of effort pursuing OT Wayne Gandy, who played with the Steelers last year, but he will be tough to sign as other left tackles are being snapped up by other teams. Miami will also be looking for wide receivers to supplement Chris Chambers and outside linebackers to make some big plays in the coming season.
