Project abstract
  • In what ways does Marpin contribute to the production and reproduction of national identity in Dominica? How do messages communicated in global media receive a local form and meaning? How is the described apparent paradox, between the transmission of global culture and the ambitions to contribute to local identity production locally perceived? Does Marpin activities contribute to the production of global identity rather than a national identity? Does Marpin activities contribute to the production of defined spaces for the production of national identities?
  • Fieldwork will be carried out during 2001. It will take place both at the TV station as well as among selected groups of Marpin audiences in Dominica.

Inter Press Service PORT OF SPAIN, Apr 11 (IPS) - Every year the people of Dominica and St. Lucia celebrate 'Kweyol' or the traditional Creole language and culture. For one week in October, they dress in 'Kweyol' fashion, and on one day they speak only in 'Kweyol'. ''The sounds of Kweyol permeate the entire society and has become part of the consciousness of even those who are not primarily Kweyol speakers. The language and culture are intertwined,'' observes St. Lucia's Folk Research Centre (FRC). The FRC in a report, titled 'Status of the Kweyol Language in St. Lucia', observes that ''not only is the Kweyol language becoming more powerful, but the Kweyol culture is gaining momentum and a wider acceptance.'' Kweyol or Creole is a broken form of French, and constitutes the most important means of communication among local people mostly on those islands where there were early French settlers.

Here, rainbows abound and mists rise gently from lush green valleys and fall softly over blue-green peaks. Rivers framed by banks of giant ferns rush and tumble to the sea. Trees sprout orchids. Hidden within the most diverse and luxuriant tropical rainforest in the Americas are gems including the unique Boiling Lake, Emerald Pool and Trafalgar Waterfalls. Dominica offers an incomparable opportunity for the avid nature lover to experience a relatively unspoiled and unchanged Caribbean island paradise - an island where one enjoys the fruits of the soil, the rich culture of its friendly people, and where one can meet the Carib Indians, the descendants of those who gave the Caribbean its name. Dominica also harbors world-class opportunities for the scuba diver, even offering a chance to snorkel through underwater hot springs. Dominica is 29 miles long and 16 miles wide, with a population of 72,000.

    Sea Cliff Cottages
    Dominica
Welcome to Sea Cliff Cottages, located on the lush nature island of Dominica. Experience the beauty of a tropical Caribbean night as you sit on your private balcony watching the moonlight on the palms and the shimmer of the sea below you. The cottages will provide you with all your needs for short or long term stays and you can relax in comfort surrounded by flowers with the sounds of the sea in the background. Located on the dramatic northeast coast, Sea Cliff is only a 15 minute drive from Dominica's main airport, Melville Hall. An afternoons drive can take you through the Carib Territory and on up into the natural beauty of Dominica's rainforest. Closer to home there are numerous hiking paths to explore or you can refresh yourself in the natural bathing pools found in nearby rivers. A secluded waterfall just a short distance away provides a delightful setting for a picnic and swim. Just below the cottages is Hodges Bay. Protected by a series of small islands, it is one of the better beaches in the area. In addition, the Hodges River empties into the sea at this point and is a favourite spot for children to play, and for rinsing off the salt after an ocean swim. Woodford Hill beach, Turtle beach and the beautiful Pointe Baptiste beach are also within walking distance. For those who wish to dive, there is a five star PADI dive centre located twelve miles away, in the village of Portsmouth, which offers certification courses as well as day and night diving. The cottages are a twenty minute walk from the picturesque fishing village of Calibishie. Here you can while away the time chatting with the local people about the customs and culture of Dominica or treat yourself to a meal in one of the restaurants. If the timing is right you can take home some fresh lobster, snapper, or mahi mahi when the fishermen return to the "bayside" in the late afternoon.

is poetry that tells of life in the Caribbean. It is poetry with music, romance and a culture of it's own.
I am from the island of DOMINICA , more commonly referred to as the Nature Isle of the Caribbean.I grew up in St. Joseph and at Cocoa Center (Hillsborough Agricultural Station) where I was in close touch with birds, greenery, water, flowers, bees...name them...I saw them growing up as a child.
The Island Man Sings His Song is my third collection of poems. In 1978 I published The Dawn and in 1981 Words in The Quiet Moments. I started writing during my second year at The Saint Mary's Academy, (Catholic High School for boys) making contributions to the schools newspaper The Marian Messenger That opened the door for me as I soon became a regular contributor to the weekly newspaper, The Star and to the local radio station's Saturday Night Local Talent Program.
At The Star I was able to meet with Mrs Phyllis Shand Allfrey-famous Dominican writer and politician- who was the paper's editor. She helped me in those early years to expose my stuff to the Dominican public as well as giving me some valuable pointers.
Besides Mrs Allfrey there were others like Alwin Bully, my English teacher at Sificol and Marcel D'jamala Fountaine, a fellow classmate at The SMA, who introduced me to radio personnel at the local radio station DBS Radio. The relationships with these people gave me the belief that I had something that I could contribute to Dominica's literary development and I hope that I have been able to do so over the years and will get the opportunity to continue doing so..
