The Dominican Republic is in the Caribbean, on the island of Hispaniola, the second largest island in the Caribbean together with Haiti. The Dominican Republic assembles the eastern two thirds of the island, with Santo Domingo as the capital. Columbus discovered it in 1492, and chosen it as his main base for the further exploration of the region. The Dominican Republic is internationally known for its Spanish ruins, spectacular palm-lined sand beaches, towering mountain peaks and excellent baseball players. About 80% of the landscape is covered by high mountains. La Romana is the highest mountain in the Caribbean, but the Dominican Republic also has 400 kilometers of white sand beaches from coast to coast, including two of the most beautiful beaches Punta Cana and Bavaro. Dominican Republic climate is subtropical with an average temperature of 77 F - in summer between 89 and 95 F while in the winter 75 to 90 F. The wet season is from June to November, and tropical hurricanes often occur at the same time. The Dominican National Park System comprise 10% of the country to preserve the diverse Dominican Republic flora, which ranges from tropical forests to semi deserts.

Annual Report Annual Report Guatemala City Regional delegation (Belize, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Panama, Suriname and other countries in the Caribbean) Hurricane Mitch
When hurricane Mitch, the worst storm to hit Central America for decades, wrought havoc in the region in November, the ICRC, under the coordination of the Federation (the lead agency for the Movement's international activities in the event of natural disaster), worked closely with the National Societies concerned. The regional delegation sent a tracing delegate to help in the search for family members who had gone missing. Above and beyond the thousands of lives it claimed, the storm caused severe damage to infrastructure in Honduras and Nicaragua and greatly set back mine-clearance efforts in the latter, as many landmines were unearthed and washed away to new, unmarked locations.
The security situation stabilized somewhat in Nicaragua and El Salvador, which had been affected by internal conflicts until the early 1990s. In Guatemala, too, the peace process continued, but the political and security situation remained more uncertain, as many of the social problems at the root of the conflict remained to be addressed. In Panama, the spillover effect of the internal conflict in Colombia caused hardship for inhabitants of the eastern region of Darién.
In Haiti a poor security situation became worse at year's end, as the government was all but paralysed by a political stand-off.

On Jan. 23 and 24, the working-class districts of Simon Bolivar and Guachupita in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic, were the sites of anti-government protests. Reuter reported that "hooded youths burned tires and erected barricades on main roads." Riot police used tear gas and shotguns to break up the demonstration. The protests were organized by the Collective of Popular Organizations and the Force of the Revolution. Both are leftist community and political organizations that are leading the struggle against the cutbacks and price increases carried out by President Leonel Fernandez' government. These demonstrations followed another, on Jan. 16. At that one, too, police clashed with young people demanding an end to price hikes. Workers World spoke with Juan Gomez, a member of the steering committee of Force of the Revolution. Gomez told WW that the new Fernandez administration has been meeting with various business groups to discuss the government's economic package, popularly known as "el paquetazo."

The Pan American Sanitary Bureau (PASB) is the executive arm of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO); it simultaneously serves as the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization.
    ORIGIN:
In 1949, the Pan American Sanitary Organization and the World Health Organization agreed that the Pan American Sanitary Bureau would serve as the Regional Office of the World Health Organization for the Americas. In 1950, the Pan American Sanitary Organization was recognized as a fully autonomous and specialized inter-American organization. Thus, the Organization became a component of both the United Nations and the inter-American systems. The XV Pan American Sanitary Conference (San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1958) changed the name of the Pan American Sanitary Organization to the Pan American Health Organization. The name of the Pan American Sanitary Bureau remained unchanged.
    FUNDAMENTAL PURPOSES:
The fundamental purposes of the Pan American Health Organization are to promote and coordinate the efforts of the countries of the Region of the Americas to combat disease, lengthen life, and promote the physical and mental health of their people.

Puerto Plata City is the center of regional commerce, a port city and the capital of the Province of Puerto Plata (pop.+/- 229,738).
The city is characterized by busy, narrow streets, quaint colonial gingerbread architecture and a wide oceanfront boulevard ending at a historical Spanish fortress.
    Dominican Experience.
Most people come unprepared to discover the real Dominican Republic because most have booked an all-inclusive resort vacation and their mindset is that everything is already paid for. And while the resorts include the meals, beverage and myriad beach and poolside games, it seems a shame to travel this far and then stay stuck in the resort just because meals and beach volleyball are free. The unseen opportunity here is that for a few hundred extra dollars you can turn a bargain resort vacation into a world class travel experience. Another way to look at it is that for the price of a short hop to the Caribbean, you can have the kind of adventures that some people spend big bucks and travel halfway around the world for. Tourism:
The Dominican Republic is working to become a popular vacation destination. In 1970, the country had 1,300 first-class rooms, the industry generated 4,932 jobs, and the total number of visitors was 87,700. In 1990, there were 19,000 rooms available, the industry generated 114,56 jobs, and the number of visitors reached 1.53 mil. In 1994, the number of rooms increased by 2,108, and an additional 3,178 were being built. Tourism generated US$1.148 bil, 5.9% of the GNP. Currently, there are 149,561 jobs in the tourism industry there. The government intends to continue building, maintaining, and expanding the infrastructure of the country. The article includes tables from the World Tourism Organization which show the improvements in the Dominican Republic's tourism industry.

History The earliest known inhabitants of the Dominican Republic reached the island around 2600 BC, using dugout canoes that allowed them to ride the current from South America throughout the Antilles. They were primarily nomadic hunter-gatherers who used stone tools and left little behind for archaeologists to examine. A second group, often referred to as the Salanoids or ancient Arawaks, landed on Hispaniola around 250 BC. The group, easily traced because of their distinctive ceramics, spread throughout the Caribbean. A third migration, from Venezuela, swept through the Antilles about 2000 years ago, and by AD 700 occupied the Dominican Republic and most of the surrounding islands. This society's complex hierarchical structure allowed for specialization in fishing, worship, art and farming. They called themselves the Tano (friendly people), and an estimated 400,000 of them lived on Hispanola when Christopher Columbus got off the ship to greet them. Folks on another island had told Columbus that there was gold to be found there, and the anxious Italian set off in the night to find it, accidentally dashing the
