    Grades 3-6
    Good and Evil
    Recommended Ages: 8-11
Designed by Megan Alrutz and Ruth Mercado
    Objectives
    Materials
    Framing
    1. On a large piece of paper, label one side “Good” and the other side “Evil.” Have the students brainstorm words and/or phrases that describe these concepts. Discuss some of the students’ ideas.
    2. Next ask the students what a good, safe place would be like. Using objects in the space, have them create a “good” environment where they would go to feel safe from danger.
    3. Line Up: Ask players to stand next to each other with their toes on a straight line of tape. Have students silently place themselves in height order keeping one foot on the tape at all times. Other variations include alphabetical by first name, birthdays, etc.
    4. Trust Walk (Rohd): Divide students into pairs. One partner closes his/her eyes while the other guides them around the space. A tap on the head indicates to move forward, a tap on the back to move backward, while a tap on either shoulder indicates to turn right or left. This is a silent exercise. The students will then switch roles.

    The Cat in the Hat
    K-3 Creative Drama Session
    Designed by Gordon Hensley
Based on Arizona Theatre Standards/Performance Objectives
    Foundations (Grades 1-3) Framing:
    1. As a class, briefly re-tell the story of The Cat in the Hat.
    and/or
    2. Sitting in your desks, take out a book. Quietly try to balance it on your head. Try balancing your pencil horizontally on one finger. Can you? The cat has wonderful balance, do you? Is it difficult? Can you balance two things at the same time? Segue into the process section. Process:
    1. Divide the students into groups of 6. Assign players to play the following roles within each group. As you call out the role, ask the student to sit down. The roles are Thing 1, Thing 2, the fish, The cat, Sally, and the boy telling the story. 2. When roles are determined, ask the students to work together for a moment to create a “frozen picture” of the middle section of the story when the Things were running wild. Encourage and cater to groups individually to emphasize physicality and expressions. 3. When groups are ready, take turns showing your pose to the other groups. Can you guess who is playing what part?
