The Yale School of Drama develops the skills, crafts and attitudes of its students to prepare them for careers in the professional theater, in particular for the demands of repertory and ensemble production in permanent theater companies such as Yale Repertory Theatre. Although many graduates are successful in other forms of theatrical production or are qualified to teach, the primary focus of the School is training for the professional, resident company. Departments The Yale School of Drama and Yale Repertory Theatre (YRT) together are a unique conservatory for theater training within the University. In each discipline of the School of Drama, the aesthetic sensibility is translated into the language of the stage. The process of applying theory to professional practice is central to the School and is subject to faculty supervision, observation and evaluation. The conservatory within the University teaches the crafts of the theater, while the intellectual world of the University informs our critical and aesthetic ideals. There are two ways to become a teacher at the University of Sydney. You can complete a Bachelor of Education degree course in one of seven specialist areas; or a graduate course in primary or secondary education after obtaining a first degree in a relevant study area.
Primary Education
This program prepares you to teach children aged five to twelve years (years K - 6). Throughout the course, you will be able to study academic subjects in other faculties. You will have access to a great variety of courses from the faculties of Arts, Economics and Business, or Science. If you are interested in further research, you may also be able to study these subjects, or an education subject, at Honours level. The combination of academic and professional subjects will put you in a strong position to choose from a variety of career paths in primary teaching as a generalist classroom teacher or other career options such as curriculum consultancy and educational research. The opportunity also exists to develop expertise in a number of specialist areas of primary teaching such as: Educational Drama, Special Education, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Languages, Aboriginal Studies and Judaic Studies.

What Off Campus Students Say...
Linda Deal, M.Ed.
"My husband, Lou, and I decided to take the program together. I had been teaching 18 years. I work as an elementary math specialist in a variety of remedial programs and teach elementary teachers how to teach math in the Continuing Education Department of Seattle Pacific University. Lou and I knew after our first Lesley class that it was an excellent program. Our professor was from Harvard, which scared us to death, but he turned out to be wonderful. That first class, Perspectives in Education, was a great beginning. It taught us to look at different issues from different people's shoes. For a lot of us who had been out of college for quite a while, it was quite a revealing course. In education, I think you get kind of slanted after a while. You see kids and parents and families from a single perspective, which may not always be the correct one. Teaching 20 years ago was not the same as teaching today; it's not the same group of kids. Society is changing and we teachers are trying to change to keep up. What's so good about the Lesley program is that it's current and it's practical. "Rather than having students uproot themselves for their graduate education, we come to serve our students' where they reside." -instructor, creative arts in learning program

Sexuality Education In the United States, education is controlled by the individual states which may leave decisions to the local level or may set guidelines for curricula and subject matter. Twenty-two states and the District of Columbia require schools to provide both sexuality and STD/HIV education; another 15 states require STD/HIV education; and 13 states have no requirements. Before 1998, 10 states required that sexuality education programs teach abstinence and did not require the inclusion of information about contraception. Thirteen states required that sexuality education teach abstinence in addition to information about condoms and contraception. Most mandates for abstinence education came from state legislatures rather than from state departments of education. In the United States, instruction about sexuality varies widely because decisions about curricula are usually determined locally; however, some general observations can be made. Most schools concentrate sexuality education in grades seven through nine and confine the unit to the health or science curriculum. Often, instructors have little or no training in sexuality education. The curricula often range from one to 15 classes, and average five classes.
