Getting ready to read
Parents can help their kids tune into language and books—starting when they’re babies
By Eve Pearlman
Parents and preschool teachers know that kids don’t just wake up one day knowing how to tie their shoes or use a fork. Learning these skills takes lots of attention and help from adults. Likewise, children don’t just automatically show up to kindergarten ready to start reading. The skills children need to help them become good readers are put into place slowly during the first five or so years of their lives, as all their senses are fine-tuned and sharpened. Before they go to school, children need to learn to pay attention to the sound of language and to recognize the shapes of letters. They learn to tell stories, listen to stories, ask questions, and, most of all, to make thinking and discovery part of their lives. Here are a few tips to help you help your children get ready to read.

Drama at Banff The Banff Centre got its start as the Banff School of Drama in 1933. It was born during the period of political discontent and disillusionment that characterized Depression-era Alberta. In the 1920's, small, local theatre groups had begun to flourish nationwide. The movement gained momentum in the early 1930's, as the failing economy put a stop to touring shows. Suddenly, Albertans were left to their own resources for entertainment and social development. Responding to this need, Ned Corbett, head of the University of Alberta's Department of Extension, applied for a $30,000 Carnegie Grant. In 1932, he established a travelling arts development program for the province and hired Elizabeth Haynes to teach drama, and the following year The Banff School of Drama was established. Actors have responded enthusiastically to the program at The Banff Centre ever since its inception in 1933. Back then, an unexpectedly high number of students registered for The Banff School of Drama, a summer class that was held in the old Brewster Auditorium on Banff Avenue.

School of Education Undergraduate Enrollment: 354
Interim Dean Emily Robertson Syracuse University's School of Education
is one of the few major research universities in New York State and nationally to offer a full range of education programs at the undergraduate level. Most programs prepare you for certification to teach in schools, in many grade levels and disciplines. If you choose not to teach in a traditional classroom setting, you can pursue one of our highly regarded professional preparation programs. The School of Education has more clinics, laboratories, and programs on or around the campus than you'll find in many small cities. Our faculty members are esteemed; many hold offices on local, regional, and national school boards, as well as agency boards. Extensive field placements and student teaching are an integral part of our programs. You start earlier-often in your first year-and complete more field experiences here-up to seven-than you would at most other schools. During your field placements, you create a teaching portfolio, documenting the skills you gain. You keep a journal and track assignments you prepare for your students. With faculty guidance, you ultimately present your impressive portfolio during job interviews upon graduation. Our teacher preparation program in inclusive education is one of the only university curricula nationally that truly integrates "regular" and special education. Our graduates know how to design and manage an increasingly prevalent class setting-one in which children have a wide range of learning abilities and disabilities. Your courses and diverse student teaching opportunities provide the knowledge and skills you need to teach in today's culturally pluralistic schools.

This initiative was seen as a vehicle whereby state agencies could consolidate and integrate the planning, development and financing of services to better serve children and families. By partnering with state departments, our community has been able to help families and children succeed. Caring Communities is currently working within 13 neighborhoods that encompass ten elementary schools and three middle schools. Neighborhoods work together to achieve the following Core Results: Through community collaboration, Caring Communities has been able to meet the needs of families through facilitation of initiatives like these: Early Childhood Programs
  • Pre-school Storytimes, Pre-school Family Fairs - Storytimes bring parents and pre-schoolers into the school so that they can become familiar with the school and staff before the child begins to attend. They also help the child become familiar with the school environment which will ease the transition from home to school. The family fairs provide educational materials on age appropriate activities and other information to help parents prepare their children. Wonder Years Program - A half-day program designed for children ages 3-5 to help teach them the basics needed for kindergarten entrance.
