Education Department at serceducation@si.edu From Borneo to Barnacles or the Exploits of an Education Intern by Mary Ford Mary Ford was a 1998 spring intern in SERC's Education Department working with Mark Haddon and Catie Drew. She graduated from Harvard University and recently completed a research stint in Borneo. I sat at the table, labeling samples and organizing data sheets. The air was thick with the oppressive threat of rain. The heat and humidity were making me desperately sleepy until I heard the faint sound of a motorboat. I leapt up and ran down to the river. Randha and Dagul smiled and waved when they saw me, and smoothly pulled the boat up to the ironwood dock. I grinned at them, reaching out to take the precious bundles that they held up to me. "Ini untuk anda dari Kantor Pos," they told me. "This is what that Post Office had for you." At our research site in Borneo, where I was studying Orang utans with a Harvard project, our field assistants went downriver to get food and mail only once every three weeks or so. Mail delivery was the most exciting part of our lives. The assistants knew this, and would gather around when we opened our letters to watch us smile and laugh and to look at our stamps and brightly-colored greeting cards.

“Marcus Did It”: A Review of a Diversity Workshop and Other Creative Education Practices for College Classrooms
PDF version Jeanne Helm
Abstract

This paper describes a diversity sensitivity workshop that changed the climate in a junior college early childhood classroom. Inspired by the workshop, an instructor developed 12 techniques for use in a college classroom, including: (1) chart presentations, (2) community surveys, (3) authentic projects, (4) board games, (5) journals, and (6) process drama. “Marcus opened our eyes.” “Marcus made us uncomfortable.” “Marcus stirred it up.” Let me explain.
A Diversity Workshop
Marcus, a counselor at our local college, initiated “diversity sensitivity” workshops—open to any discipline at the junior college. I asked Marcus to conduct a workshop with a class of 25 child care students studying a chapter on diversity. The following hour was a surprise to those who were fortunate enough to be a part of this training in diversity. In the usually quiet and respectful classroom of child care students, there were sudden bursts of laughter, giggles, pouts, and gestures of misunderstandings. Why? Marcus chose an active learning approach to teacher education to spark the classroom’s understanding of diversity.

Why Become a Historian?
Thomas Cleveland Holt, University of Chicago
M y decision to become a historian came quite late. As a child I sat under a big tree on lazy summer afternoons while my grandmother shelled peas and recollected colorful stories about wondrous events in our corner of southside Virginia. Later, I had been spellbound while Mr. Hinnant, my high school teacher, brought to life the African general Hannibal crossing the Alps to defeat Rome's finest legions. But it had never occurred to me at the time, nor for a long time thereafter, that I should teach or write history, that I should or could be a professional historian. Coming of age in the era of Sputnik and the challenge to explore the frontiers of science and entering college at the height of the civil rights movement, I continued to think that my life's work should be focused more on the present and the future than on the past. In fact, not until I entered graduate school did I decide both to be a university teacher and to study specifically the history of the African American experience. Even then, it may be stretching a point to say I "decided." The word seems much too definitive and the active voice may not be appropriate. In some ways events decided the matter for me. I entered graduate school in the fall of 1968, the

Introduction Because I’m an attorney, I always get the opportunity to tell a few attorney jokes. How many of you know the one about the rats? If you know the rat joke, just raise your hand. OK, that’s too many—I won’t tell the rat joke. You know where copper wire came from, don’t you? Two lawyers fighting over the same penny. Home Schooling, the Law, and Public Schools Home Schoolers and Technology Audience Questions I’d much rather hear what questions you have, and make a good faith effort to answer them, than to either put you all to sleep or risk incurring your wrath, because frankly there’s just too much ripe fruit in this room for a home schooler to stand up and irritate a bunch of folks who mostly serve the public school community. Does anybody have any questions that a home schooler’s perspective on these technologies might be able to help?
