Dra 102 INTRODUCTION TO THEATRE: Theatre and Dramatic Literature Before 1800 This course provides students with an introduction to theatre history and to some of the important plays of various historical epochs. One of the focuses of the course is the socially created meaning of theatre, including interaction between audience and stage, the role of the theatre professional in society and the connections between theatre and religious institutions. The course will also introduce various theatrical styles. The dramas themselves are interpreted as blueprints for performance., not just as examples of literature. Dra 201 CONTEMPORARY CANADIAN DRAMA Canadian drama from 1967 on, including the plays of Tremblay, French, Thompson, Walker, Highway, and McDonald. Dra 203 CONTEMPORARY EUROPEAN DRAMA European drama since 1960 through examination of works of influential playwrights and dramatic theorists.

    Dramatic Literature from the Greeks to Ibsen
    Robert Scanlan
    This course is a broad survey of major monuments of drama, starting with Aeschylus'Oresteia and culminating with Ibsen's Peer Gynt, the gateway to modern drama. Lectures introduce the historical periods that produced and preserved selected classics of western drama. After the Greeks, Roman, and Medieval examples pave the way for Renaissance and French Neo-classical masterpieces, followed by the rise of bourgeois drama, Goethe and finally Ibsen.

    Syllabus THRE 3365 Fall 1999 THEATRE HISTORY AND DRAMATIC LITERATURE: SINCE WWII Instructor: Dr. Philip Craik Prerequisite: none Office: Ryan Fine Arts Building, South Wing, Room 100 C Office Phone: 691-6304 Office Hours: 8:30-10 MWF 1:30-2:30 MW 8:30-10:30 TR Textbook: History of the Theatre , 7th edition, by Oscar Brockett Objectives: To study the historical development of dramatic literature, critical theory, the stage, auditorium, scenery, production arrangements, and the acting and directing professions from World War II to the present. The student is expected to learn the relationships between major social, economic, religious, philosophical and political forces throughout history and their effect upon dramatic literature. The student is made familiar with approximately 12 of the most important plays of the modern era. Methods of Evaluation: 1. Students will read and give written reports on a minimum of four plays during the semesterworth a total 20% of grade. The reports will include a cast list of the principal characters and a synopsis of the action. They will be between 1 and 2 single-spaced typewritten pages in length. Copies of these reports will be made by the teacher and distributed to classmembers. Some test questions will be taken from this material. 2. Four written tests will be given over assigned reading and viewing material and class lectures worth 40% of overall grade.

Students should note that this Minor does NOT qualify them to present Drama as a second teachable subject to the Faculty of Education at Western unless supplemented by 2.0 full courses in "Dramatic or Theatre Arts."
