http://www.speedimpact.org/driver_ed.html
Driver Education
We can all be instrumental in helping keep our young people alive - by encouraging your child to do a post license defensive/skilled driving course - by taking an active part in their learner driving education - by making sure they gain experience in all weather conditions - by reinforcing the vital need to drive with IN posted speed limits and at reduced speeds during adverse road conditions and NEVER driving after consuming alcohol/drugs! Driver education in the State of Victoria (Aust) is sadly lacking...methods used have not advanced in many years! New drivers are taught how to get their license but NOT how to become aware drivers with the necessary skills to keep themselves and their passengers alive and injury free! SpeedImpact.org members believe it should be mandatory for all learner drivers as part of their probationary licensing requirements to successfully complete a defensive/skilled drivers course - in the same way that motorcyclists must to obtain a license!
NB:
These courses are not designed to turn people into racing car drivers - their aim is to avoid getting into emergency situations, but if the need arises help to teach drivers the necessary skills to get out of one. The current thinking of the TAC - Transport Accident Commission - with their campaign of putting parents at the forefront of their childs learner driving education is insufficient - most parents are not experts in this field - wouldn't you rather have your child learn these skills (that may help save their lives) from a professional?

Driver Education and Testing in America
(Part of the Reasonable Drivers Unanimous site) In one word it's a joke. The biggest problem with American drivers is the lack of any real drivers education and testing. Driving around a small test course is hardly a test of a driver's ability; it's a test of being able to stop at a stop sign, being able to back up in a straight line, and, if it is a really hard test, being able to parallel park. The tests need to be on the road and NOT in the equivalent of a parking lot. A potential driver needs to be tested on things like: merging into traffic, passing, staying to the right, etc. And how well they can handle emergencies like skidding, spin outs, etc. Yeah, they (sometimes) teach it in drivers ed but they usually don't give a motorist any hands-on experience. For those of you who teach driver education during the school year outside of thenormal school day, driver education provides a nice supplementary income.

Should I be a Driver Education Teacher? This is a question that one must reflect on before attempting this venture. In order to answer this question, one must look at a little history of education in North Dakota and in the United States in general.
In North Dakota, the number of schools and students has diminished greatly over the past two decades. Most schools are small in number. Many times teachers find themselves teaching five different preparations in one school day. The curriculum has changed. Technology is the wave of the future. Foreign languages and vocational training have made significant strides in the school curriculum during the past decade. School administrators are finding it difficult to fit in all of the coursework that is needed into the students four-year plan in high school. In all states, this has become an increasingly difficult problem. Driver education has suffered because of these changes. Most driver education programs in North Dakota are offered during the summer months. In many states, the course is offered outside of the normal school day during the school year. This may appear that being a driver education instructor offers a bleak future, but there is a positive side. Most teachers look for and need summer employment. Driver education offers an opportunity at summer employment in an area that the teacher is trained. That is to work with young people. This job pays at a professional level and can provide summer employment for many years. For those of you who teach driver education during the school year outside of the normal school day, driver education provides a nice supplementary income. It sure beats pumping gas or sacking groceries.

Steering Students Straight on ABS
By Rosemarie Kitchin, director of ABS Education Alliance
Summer 1997
After what may have seemed like ages of hand-me-down dirt bikes and banana seaters, remember when you were finally old enough to ride a 10-speed bicycle? The first lesson you learned was to brake with your hands, not your feet. Even today, there are still lessons to be learned about brakes, whether you're riding a bike or driving an automobile. And it goes without saying that the larger and more powerful the vehicle, the more important it becomes for the driver to understand the braking system. Modern automotive brake systems have changed braking "rules of the road" for good. As you know, with four-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS), drivers should not pump the brake pedal in emergency situations; instead, they must brake firmly and steer out of danger. The ABS Education Alliance was created to speed along the ABS learning process and underscore the safety benefits of using ABS in emergency situations. Right now, drivers seem to have few sources of information on ABS, including driver ed courses. In fact, a survey conducted by the ABS Education Alliance found that among relatively new drivers ages 18 to 24 65 percent were not taught about ABS in driver education.

Parents of new drivers can teach strategies for safety on the roads, 3/8/2003 Ian Meeker, (715) 373-6104, ian.meeker@ces.uwex.edu
Parents of new drivers can teach strategies for safety on the roads As a rite of passage, not many rituals rival acquiring a driver's license. For a 16 year old, it's a monumental step toward independence. Most teenagers cannot wait to get behind the wheel, but many parents struggle with the idea of handing over such a huge responsibility to their children. Because teenagers will do almost anything to get permission to drive, this is a golden opportunity for parents to initiate a formal conversation to explain their concerns about how, when and under what conditions their teenagers can drive the family car, according to Ian Meeker, University of Wisconsin-Extension 4H youth development agent in Bayfield County. "Parents can complement formal driver's education," Meeker explained. "When teenagers are practicing driving with their parents during the permit phase, parents should take advantage of teachable moments that occur. Parents can reinforce the importance of adjusting driving habits to road and weather conditions and time of day. They also can talk about avoiding distractions and establish expectations for using a family vehicle." Meeker offered some suggestions for parents of beginning drivers.

There are a lot of fine points to the art of spotting. Great spotting, truly refined expertise in this area, is something that takes a lot of time and a lot of experience to learn. It is experience one gains from watching others and trying to apply what you have learned from watching. It would not make sense to try to write about the finer points of great spotting. However, there are a few things that all spotters should know from the start that pave the way for a safer and more enjoyable trail experience. Drivers should be as knowledgeable about the basic rules of spotting as the spotters are. Drivers have a different set of spotting rules to follow but the rulse for drivers are just as important as the rules for spotters. Very little has been written for drivers on the subject of spotting. Hopefully that will change with this article since the second section is dedicated to the driver. When both sides follow the rules the trail becomes a much smoother place.

Stanford Driving School for certified driver education and interactive driver training. Providing behind the wheel driver education training from Stanford Driving School, defensive techniques and more.
Our Mission
We care about our students and are concerned about their future. We do not sugar coat the fact that driving is a potentially dangerous activity. Thus, we will never be satisfied teaching our students merely the minimum standards required to pass the DMV driving test. We believe our students deserve more and we will be satisfied with nothing less than providing each of them the highest quality, up-to-date driving education experience. Stanford Diving School was established in 1981 by founders who insisted that it be operated as a school first and a business second. We continue this fine tradition as a leader in the field of driver education and driver training. Our Goals are to develop drivers who posses both an excellent understanding of the rules of the road and a high level of competence in control of their vehicle. In every case, our goals are to produce drivers who possess confidence in his or her ability to drive on any road under any condition. This confidence comes only from our commitment to building solid habits of good driving techniques in each of our students. The result is that nearly 100% of our students pass the DMV drivers test on their first try. Our Drivers Education (classroom) and Drivers Training (Behind the Wheel) is required for all new teen drivers under the age of 18 who wish to obtain a California drivers license. Driver Education consists of 30 hours of lecture, films and interactive learning exercises. These 30 hours of lecture are conducted over a 4-day period in a classroom environment with certified instructors. All instruction material is DMV approved and is provided to each student.

The science of driving is highly orchestrated under a very deliberately structured taxonomy incorporating vision training and decision-making skills. The odds that a driver will learn to acquire a lifelong style of empowering driving habits without having had formal education is as likely as winning a state lottery. Drivers need to receive effective risk management behavioral training. Such training can only occur when instructors learn to perform a systematic method of driving that must become their internal style of driving. To meet the current needs of helping novice drivers as well as all drivers to reduce the risk of driving, the National Institute For Driver Behavior has proposed a new five-tiered structuring of how driver educators are to be trained and certified.

Tracy-Williams Consulting. Far too many bicyclists in the U.S. lack the basic skills and knowledge necessary for either riding safely in traffic or simply riding efficiently. While some skills and concepts are too esoteric for the "masses," other skills and concepts should be well-known to all. A complicating factor in helping people develop those basic skills and knowledge is the wide range of ages involved and the need to tailor the message and approach to each one. For example, youngsters in the elementary grades need different kinds of information than do adults in college. They ride in different environments at (typically) different times and suffer from different types of crash problems. In addition, while effectively reaching youngsters must also involve reaching their parents to reinforce the messages, college students probably could care less about their parents' safety ideas. On the other hand, it is often easier to reach elementary grade youngsters than adults. In this light, a community strategy for implementing bicyclist education and raising awareness must be broad-based and multifaceted. It should include the following:

Life lesson 4,328 Never say things can't get any worse. As soon as that statement is verbalized comes life lesson 4,329 things can get worse. Let's start at the beginning. Classes had started and I had my recycled paper, notebooks and mismatched gym clothes on. I was ready to get this final semester started. Then things started to go wrong. I received the loan money at the freshman level. When the cute guy in my class needed a highlighter, I accidentally handed him a tampon. To top things off, I began to realize every college freshman woman has a seemingly gravity-resistant body. Then, my friend tried to make me feel better by reminding me I still have a chance with architecture and archaeology students because they like older things.
