Local Healthy School Programme Co-ordinators are the banker but are planning how the money is spent in collaboration with partners on the local Drug Action Team (DAT), including the PCT. DH has requested that Local Programme Co-ordinators submit the pro-forma action plan attached to the letter giving details of the funding outlining the activity that the money will be spent on and signed agreement (with DAT and PCT signatures) by mid September. DH is alerting PCTs to this work as Local programme Co-ordinators will be contacting them to discuss this activity and to seek their signed agreement. National School Drug Education Strategy
May 1999
A Commonwealth Government Initiative
Foreword
The potential for disruption to families, academic performance, physical development and social integration into the world of adult life is most apparent during the teenage years. Research indicates that the majority of 17 year olds have tried an illegal drug at least once. The age of first experimentation with drugs is lowering. These very real threats to young people in our schools require a firm commitment by governments to a consistent, national message. A goal of "no illicit drugs in schools" for this Strategy was endorsed by the Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs at its meeting in December 1997. The National School Drug Education Strategy was prepared by the National Advisory Committee on School Drug Education after extensive consultation with education, health and law enforcement professionals, parent groups, individuals and community organisations. I thank the Committee for its work and also the many organisations, young people and individuals who contributed to the consultation process. Under the National School Drug Education Strategy, the Commonwealth will fund new and innovative drug education programmes for students and training for teachers. The Commonwealth recognises that the messages delivered by schools need to be reinforced by parents and the wider community. To support this, the Commonwealth will lead the development of strong school/community partnerships and the provision of information to parents.

The mission of the Plano ISD counseling program is to provide guidance and counseling through a team approach so that students develop emotionally, socially and academically in order to become responsible members of society. The goals of the program are to (1) guide and counsel students toward academic success, (2) help students explore options for the ever-changing workforce through career and college guidance, (3) assist students to develop life coping skills, and (4) use a team approach to help meet students' needs. Comprehensive guidance and counseling is an integral part of each school's educational program. A developmental school guidance program includes activities which are organized and implemented by certified school counselors and are based on identified student needs. Emphasis at the elementary level is on prevention of problems which might affect school work and providing classroom guidance on such topics as study skills, problem-solving, communication skills, and conflict management. Secondary counselors assist students in educational planning, including planning for college and career, through individual and small group academic conferences for students and parents. All counselors assist students with difficulties that interfere with learning and guide them in developing effective decision-making skills.

But there has to be a balance between fun and learning. Ruth Ruthven of The Big Idea Inventor Centre has a view how to achieve that balance. Having taken the step to leave the teaching profession after a career in primary education, I welcomed the opportunity to widen my horizons in Glasgow Science Centre. Here we would develop, monitor and evaluate educational programmes. These include science shows, workshops and structured trails around interactive exhibits. They're all specifically aimed at pupils and have the curriculum at the forefront, addressing key learning outcomes across a wide subject/skill-based spectrum. They're developed in partnership with teachers and the Centre's education and science staff to help teachers deliver activities which would otherwise be too costly or challenging to undertake in schools. Enhancing the curriculum and school-based teaching, the motivational aspect of all programmes is also a key outcome. But there are two schools of thought within the science world concerning the use of the exhibits in science centres. Let me explain:

  • The report School Associated Violent Deaths 1994-1999 was published in the December 5, 2001, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. The report finds that although school-associated violent deaths remain rare events, they have occurred often enough to allow for the detection of patterns and the identification of potential risk factors. This information may help schools respond to this problem. The National Criminal Justice Reference Service offers an online resource that provides information on school safety, bullying, conflict resolution, security and other school-related issues. SafeUSA hosted Mobilizing for a SafeUSA, a conference focusing on reducing violence and injury in America, December 3-5, 2001. The topics that this conference addressed include school safety, building safe communities, violence and suicide prevention, preventing motor vehicle injuries and more. Significant Points
  • Over half of all counselors have a master's degree. Most States require some form of counselor credentialing, licensure, certification, or registry for practice outside schools; all States require school counselors to hold a State school counseling certification.

Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Counselors assist people with personal, family, educational, mental health, and career decisions and problems. Their duties depend on the individuals they serve and on the settings in which they work. Educational, vocational, and school counselors Elementary school counselors observe younger children during classroom and play activities, and confer with their teachers and parents to evaluate their strengths, problems, or special needs. They also help students develop good study habits. They do less vocational and academic counseling than do secondary school counselors. School counselors at all levels help students understand and deal with social, behavioral, and personal problems. These counselors emphasize preventive and developmental counseling to provide students with the life skills needed to deal with problems before they occur, and to enhance personal, social, and academic growth. Counselors provide special services, including alcohol and drug prevention programs, and classes that teach students to handle conflicts without resorting to violence. Counselors also try to identify cases involving domestic abuse and other family problems that can affect a student's development. Counselors work with students individually, with small groups, or with entire classes. They consult and work with parents, teachers, school administrators, school psychologists, school nurses, and social workers.

Preface American School Health Association (ASHA) resolutions define the Association's stand on specific school health issues or concerns. Interested individuals or groups submit proposed resolutions to the ASHA Resolutions Committee, a standing committee that represents various professions within the Association. This committee: 1) accepts the proposed resolution, 2) rejects the proposed resolution, or 3) asks the submitting party to revise the proposed resolution. The committee forwards accepted proposed resolutions to the ASHA Board of Directors for final approval or rejection. Such action requires a majority vote of board members voting at a meeting in which a quorum of the Board is present. The resolutions on this page are currently active. They are five years old or younger, or have been re-approved by the ASHA Board of Directors. The table of contents lists resolutions alphabetically within each category. Some resolutions appear in two or more categories to reflect how elements of the comprehensive school health program intertwine. Each resolution includes a notation listing: 1) the year the resolution was approved; 2) the year it will be reviewed to ensure its relevancy; and 3) the ASHA standing committee, section, council - individually or combined - responsible for its future revision.
