Drug Company Agressively Pursues FDA Approval For New Mesothelioma Medicine
By Shannon Dininny, Associated Press
INDIANAPOLIS - Eli Lilly and Co. is working with U.S. regulators to speed up review of a drug to treat a rare cancer linked to asbestos exposure.
If approved, the drug, known as Alimta, would become the first medicine sanctioned by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration specifically to treat mesothelioma. The deadly tumors of the lungs or stomach are resistant to treatment and the cancer is nearly always fatal.
Alimta could hold promise for thousands of workers in the construction and shipbuilding trades worldwide who handled asbestos and could contract mesothelioma. Lilly is seeking a priority review by the FDA, meaning the regulator would review the drug within six months. A standard review takes 10 months.
Results of final clinical trials for the drug released May 20 showed patients receiving the drug, chemotherapy medicine and vitamins lived 13 months after being diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma. That compared with seven months for those who received only the standard chemotherapy drug Cisplatin and vitamins.
Patients taking the drug during the yearlong study of 456 people also suffered less pain and had fewer breathing difficulties, Lilly reported.

TOUGH LOVE AND DISCIPLINE PROBLEMS/TREATMENT OPTIONS
What are commonly referred to as 'juvenile boot camps' are limited to youth already within the Juvenile Justice System or on probation or sentenced by a judge.
There are other kinds of programs run privately that offer tough love or other strict discipline, often related to youth substance abuse.
There are also vital support groups for other parents going through the same problems with youth and they offer not only support but constructive ideas. You can find them by contacting Tough Love International 1-800-333-1069
Koch Crime Institute
, which publishes a national guide to juvenile justice boot camps, advises:
Identifying local programs in your state is best accomplished by using resources in your community. Contact your local county attorney or juvenile justice office, community mental health center, school counselor, and in some areas, the public health department. All of these organizations know of programs for youth. Financial assistance may be available to you. Many programs are based upon one's ability to pay depending on income level. Other treatment programs accept health insurance and private payment from parents who can afford such an arrangement.
Other alternatives you might consider come from the Texas Youth Commission and the National Association of Therapeutic Wilderness Camps.

RESOURCES FOR MALE SURVIVORS OF CHILDHOOD SEXUAL ABUSE AND INCEST
Dear Alice, I am a male survivor of childhood (homo)sexual abuse and incest. I have recently stopped my horribly abusive alcohol and drug habits and am having to deal more with my issues now that I'm not using "painkillers." I'm worried that if I don't do something soon, I might be miserable for the rest of my life and may never be able to have a relationship or even sex. I am very hurt by the fact that there are no resources on campus for male survivors. All the groups are for women as if male survivors don't exist . Anyways, please refer me to any resources you are aware of in NYC. Thanks. Signed,
Uncomfortable Dear Uncomfortable, It's great that you're taking the next steps towards healing and recovery. You're right, most support groups for survivors of childhood sexual abuse and incest are geared towards women, but there are also many that are geared to both women and men. From your question, it appears you are interested in a group for male survivors only. In New York City, there's the Center for Adults Sexually Abused as Children (ASAC), which offers support groups for men only, as well as for women only and for both men and women together. ASAC also has individual counseling. You can call or write them at:
