For more information on Vermeer the artist, visit All-About-Johannes-Vermeer What is the purpose of this page? Firstly it is for my personal use, to provide access to links that I find useful. However, I am sharing these with the readers of this page in case they too find them useful. The page is primarily designed for English speakers who wish to know more about the Dutch, the Flemish and their language and culture. By "Dutch" in the general sense, I can mean: (1) referring to the present nation of the Netherlands (Holland), the northernmost of the two Low Countries; (2) referring to the historical Netherlands, roughly speaking the present Netherlands, Belgium-Luxemburg, and the north of France (Flanders and Artois, or Nord-Pas de Calais); (3) referring to the language, i.e. the native language in most of the present Netherlands (except Friesland) and the north of Belgium (Flanders). The page does not attempt to be comprehensive, most of the links are to language- and culture-related topics

1 Linschoten was born at Haarlem in or about 1563. He started his travels at the age of sixteen and, after some years in Spain, went with the Portuguese East India fleet to Goa, where he arrived in September 1583, returning in f 589. In 1594 and 1595 he took part in the Dutch Arctic voyages, and in 1598 settled at Enkhuizen, where he died on the 8th of February i6f I. His Navig’atio ac itinerarium (1595—1596) is a compilation based partly on his own experiences, partly on those of other travellers with whom he came in contact. It was translated into English and German in 1598; two Latin versions appeared in 1599 and a French translation in 1610. The famous English version was reprinted for the Hakluyt Society in 1885. Large selections, with an Introduction, are published in C. Raymond Beazley’s Voyages and Travels, vol. ii. (English Garner, London, 1903). of ten was established at the Hague to transact the business of the company with the states-general. The “collegium” of seventeen nominated the governors-general who were appointed after 1608. The charter, which was granted for twenty-one years, conferred great powers on the company. It was endowed with a monopoly of the trade with the East Indies, was allowed to import free from all custom dues, though required to pay 3% on exports, and charged with a rent to the states. It was authorized to maintain armed forces by sea and land, to erect forts and plant colonies, to make war or peace, to arrange treaties in the name of the stadtholder, since eastern potentates could not be expected to understand what was meant by the states-general, and to coin money. It had full administrative, judicial and legislative authority over the whole of the sphere of operations, which extended from the west of the Straits of Magellan westward to the Cape of Good Hope.

19. Introduction To The Dutch Language
Eleven lessons by Ruud Rietvink.

By R. Rietvink at ruud@blue.demon.nl mynedstat("PatatjeVanDeDag","AAl38wJ5NrSLgcOaQ7OyKGeNVqJw");
Introduction to the Dutch language
Is it possible to learn a language via the internet? You might ask. Perhaps not, therefor I'll only give an introduction to it. Before all I'd like to apologize on forehand for my sometimes bad or even incorrect English (I learned it via the internet :-).
Of course, this is only an attempt, no promises are made that you will learn anything or will not make a fool of yourself when you try to order a dust bin with mayo on the side in a restaurant.
Furthermore, it is still under construction, and I take a lot of time between creating new lessons, cause I have a life besides this, so emailing me about new lessons is allowed but won't have any impact on the arrival date of future ones.
This introduction is intended for people who can speak and write English correctly. People who also speak German have a slight advantage when it comes to grammar and pronunciation. Speaking one of the Scandinavian languages also helps to cope with some of the difficult sounds in Dutch.
It consists of a (very slowly growing) number of lessons
A language can be subdivided into the following parts:
Spelling

Pronunciation

Grammer (oops grammar)
Vocabulary

Sentences
Exercises Bad language Of these grammar is probably the most difficult, closely followed by pronunciation. You can skip the latter if you only want to read/write Dutch and not speak it. The vocabulary will just be learning lotsa words and expressions.
