Welcome to the Dyslexia Homepage Welcome to the Dyslexia Homepage. Dyslexia is a disorder that effects millions of people all over the world. It is one type of specific learning disability (SLD) that effects reading. SLDs can effect people as verbal and nonverbal deficits in all cultures, as seen in current SLD research on Japanese symbols. Although people can learn to compensate for their SLD, it is a permanent disorder that effects the way a person understands, processes, "takes in," retains, recalls, and/or expresses information. SLDs effect esteem, education, vocation, socialization, and daily life through problems in listening, reading, writing, spelling, mathematics, problem solving, organization, and time management through verbal and nonverbal perceptions. A person with a SLD learns at their own level and pace, while excelling in at least one area. Frequently, they will be inconsistent in their daily tasks and abilities, such as spelling a word one day and not the next day. Some of their experiences are difficulties with concentration, perception, memory, verbal skills (oral and/or textual), abstract reasoning, hand-eye coordination, social adjustment, low grades, underachievement, and expression. Often, people with SLDs are considered lazy, rebellious, class clowns, unmotivated, misfits, or of low intelligence. These misconceptions, without understanding the SLD's effect on the person's life, lead to rejection, isolation, feelings of inferiority, discouragement, and low self-esteem.

"Because he had dyslexia, too," says Sam. Dyslexia (say: dis- lex -ee-uh) is a name for a learning problem that involves reading and writing. Sam has trouble reading and remembering what he read. It doesn't mean he is not smart. (Einstein had dyslexia, and everyone knows he was very smart.) Most people with dyslexia have average or above-average intelligence. Sam, who is 8, has taken a lot of tests, and he knows that he has above-average intelligence. He's really good at math, science, art, and (of course) gym. So why is it hard for him to read? It's the way the brain is organized in people with dyslexia. Sometimes the messages the brain is sending get jumbled up or confused. Kids like Sam may be able to see and hear perfectly well. But what they see and hear looks different or sounds different than it would to most people. Dyslexia is a difficulty in learning to read despite traditional instruction, average intelligence, and an adequate opportunity to learn. It is an impairment in the brain's ability to translate images received from the eyes or ears into understandable language. Dyslexia does not result from vision or hearing problems. It is not due to mental retardation, brain damage , or a lack of intelligence. Dyslexia can go undetected in the early grades of schooling.
