Viewing the Earth
You can view either a map of the Earth showing the day and night regions at this moment, or view the Earth from the Sun , the Moon , the night side of the Earth, above any location on the planet specified by latitude, longitude and altitude , from a satellite in Earth orbit , or above various cities around the globe. Images can be generated based on a full-colour image of the Earth by day and night, a topographical map of the Earth, up-to-date weather satellite imagery , or a composite image of cloud cover superimposed on a map of the Earth, or a colour composite which shows clouds, land and sea temperatures, and ice. Expert mode allows you additional control over the generation of the image. You can compose a custom request with frequently-used parameters and save it as a hotlist or bookmark item in your browser. E arth is the third planet from the Sun and the fifth largest: orbit : 149,600,000 km (1.00 AU ) from Sun diameter : 12,756.3 km mass : 5.972e24 kg E arth is the only planet whose English name does not derive from Greek/Roman mythology. The name derives from Old English and Germanic. There are, of course, hundreds of other names for the planet in other languages . In Roman Mythology, the goddess of the Earth was Tellus - the fertile soil (Greek: Gaia terra mater - Mother Earth). I t was not until the time of Copernicus (the sixteenth century) that it was understood that the Earth is just another planet. E arth, of course, can be studied without the aid of spacecraft. Nevertheless it was not until the twentieth century that we had maps of the entire planet. Pictures of the planet taken from space are of considerable importance; for example, they are an enormous help in weather prediction and especially in tracking and predicting hurricanes. And they are extraordinarily beautiful. T he Earth is divided into several layers which have distinct chemical and seismic properties (depths in km):
0- 40 Crust 40- 400 Upper mantle 400- 650 Transition region 650-2700 Lower mantle 2700-2890 D'' layer 2890-5150 Outer core 5150-6378 Inner core The crust varies considerably in thickness, it is thinner under the oceans, thicker under the continents. The inner core and crust are solid; the outer core and mantle layers are plastic or semi-fluid. The various layers are separated by

The NASA Space Shuttle Earth Observations Photography database of over 400,000 images is a national treasure. We are publishing these selected photos and related captions on the Internet to provide a glimpse of this national treasure to the public. This database was compiled by our staff to illustrate some very interesting Earth features and processes, including cities as seen by our Astronauts from space. Earth from Space provides several ways to search the selected images. Each image is available in three resolutions and includes a cataloging data and a caption. However, this site contains only a small selection of the best of our Earth photography. The complete database of NASA's Earth imagery is available at the Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth , which contains more than 400,000 images. The information contained in this collection is for informational purposes only and does not constitute official NASA positions or statements. We plan to update the database as new information becomes available. We encourage you to

Earth Day
Earth Day 2003
Global Peace Blitz
The purpose of Earth Site is to get attention for the Earth Day Idea -
the idea that can do the most for people and planet:
All individuals and institutions have a mutual responsibility to act as Trustees of Earth, seeking the choices in ecology, economics and ethics that will eliminate pollution, poverty and violence, foster peaceful progress, awaken the wonder of life, and realize the best potential for the future of the human adventure. "The earth will continue to regenerate its life sources only as long as we and all the peoples of the world do our part to conserve its natural resources. It is a responsibility which every human being shares. Through voluntary action, each of us can join in building a productive land in harmony with nature." President Gerald Ford
Proclaiming March 21st as Earth Day
EARTH DAY uses one of humanity’s great discoveries, the discovery of anniversaries by which, throughout time, human beings have kept their sorrows and their joys, their victories, their revelations and their obligations alive, for re-celebration and re-dedication another year, another decade, another century another eon. EARTH DAY reminds the people of the world of the need for continuing care which is vital to Earth’s safety. …EARTH DAY draws on astronomical phenomena in a new way; using the vernal equinox, the time when the Sun crosses the equator making night and day of equal length in all parts of the Earth. To this point in the annual calendar, EARTH DAY attaches no local or divisive set of symbols, no statement of the truth or superiority of one way of life over another. But the selection of the March equinox makes planetary observance of a shared event possible.

Earth Image/Animation Gallery Internet Resources Earth From Space Earth Viewer From the perspective we get on Earth, our planet appears to be big and sturdy with an endless ocean of air. From space, astronauts often get the impression that the Earth is small with a thin, fragile layer of atmosphere. For a space traveler, the distinguishing Earth features are the blue waters, brown and green land masses and white clouds set against a black background. Many dream of traveling in space and viewing the wonders of the universe. In reality all of us are space travelers. Our spaceship is the planet Earth, traveling at the speed of 108,000 kilometers (67,000 miles) an hour. Earth is the 3rd planet from the Sun at a distance of about 150 million kilometers (93.2 million miles). It takes 365.256 days for the Earth to travel around the Sun and 23.9345 hours for the Earth rotate a complete revolution. It has a diameter of 12,756 kilometers (7,973 miles), only a few hundred kilometers larger than that of Venus. Our atmosphere is composed of 78 percent nitrogen, 21 percent oxygen and 1 percent other constituents. Earth is the only planet in the solar system known to harbor life. Our planet's rapid spin and molten nickel-iron core give rise to an extensive magnetic field, which, along with the atmosphere, shields us from nearly all of the harmful radiation coming from the Sun and other stars. Earth's atmosphere protects us from meteors, most of which burn up before they can strike the surface.

Jean-Paul Keulen has taken up the mantle of librarian, creating an archive of the 3rd and 4th Ages . The mailing list archive seems to be down, as are the previous 3rd/4th Age archives. No one has taken up the mantle of author of late. Could it be you? In case you stumbled upon this by accident, the Card of the Day is a review of cards from the Middle-earth Collectible Card Game, made by ICE You see the Archive of past issues or you can download a complete text archive of Gandalf's reviews (1-250). Due to disk quotas, I decided to present it as a gzipped file . You can also get an archive (.tar.gz) of my reviews, . If you would like them in another format (like .zip), let me know A while ago, a Spanish gentleman sent me a nifty (if overpowered) Isildur card in jpeg format. For you non-Spanish speakers, the text is basically "Unique. +2 DI against men and man factions." Skills are Warrior/Scout (I think)/Ranger. for art, card names, and card spoilers.
