FEEDBACK
This 'n' That
By Laura McHale Holland Local composer and arts educator Candy Forest says she's shuffling off to Buffalo, N.Y., to celebrate an early Earth Day with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra on March 30. Some history buffs may recall that the City of San Francisco, along with other Northern California municipalities and, ahem, the United Nations, proclaimed the first-ever Earth Day 33 years ago on March 21the vernal equinoxnot on April 22, the day we now conduct Earth Day teach-ins throughout the U.S. The U.N. still celebrates Earth Day on March 21, ringing spring in with the dulcet tones of its peace bell. That means our Diamond Street shuffler could actually be celebrating Mother Earth nine days late. But what does it matter, really? Ms. Forest is one of those rare people who encourages responsible stewardship of the earth every day. Using a lively mix of musical genres, her work celebrates sea otters, reptiles, elephants, giraffesall creatures inhabiting the planet. And that's why the Buffalo Philharmonic is presenting the world premiere of "All in This Together," an hour-long concert of earth-loving music composed by Forest and her frequent collaborator Nancy Schimmel.

In collaboration with
John McConnell July 3, 1999 “EARTH DAY celebrates the deep-seated and persistent desire of populations around the globe for peace and harmony, which have been disrupted over the years by misguided leaders but never by the people themselves."
George Gallup, Jr. June 30, 1999. The coming of the New Millennium may impel us to examine what remains to be done to improve the quality of life for individuals all over the world. The past need not be prologue. At the closing of the last millennium, 999 A. D., Europe had become poor and backward. There was no maintenance of cities and roads had fallen into ruin. By our standards, life for most Europeans was unimaginably mean, dirty and unhealthy. The impact on Europe of the Fall of the Roman Empire, five centuries earlier, proved to almost wipe out civilization. Nobel Laureate Harold Urey, stated, "We in the older generation have begun to realize the immense changes on the Earth in our lifetime. Due to trains and airlines, we can travel quickly to all parts of the Earth. Due to atomic bombs people all over the earth are in danger. Due to the success of information and medicine we face the possibility of an overpopulated Earth. All of these things are of great concern to all of us. It is time we began to think in terms of a unified Earth. One of the best ways, it seems to me, is to celebrate EARTH DAY, on March 20, 1977 as well as in all the years to come. In this way the people of the Earth can dedicate themselves to understanding these facts, and to intelligently act on them." (From Nobel Laureate Statements supporting Earth Day – United Nations, 1977.)

"Earth Day is the first holy day ... and is devoted to the
harmony of nature... The celebration offends no historical
calendar, yet it transcends them all."
- Margaret Mead Hello Friend of Planet Earth, Thanks for your interest in exploring in the Earth Day activity "In Balance With Earth." Just imagine how all of life on Earth might be a happier experience if 600 million people this year learned to deal with the underlying causes of our personal, environmental and social disharmony. Our runaway problems are not found in natural systems or nature centered people. They result from industrial society's excessive separation from nature and its disruptive effects on our naturally peaceful thoughts and relationships. Far too often, our efforts to live harmoniously with Earth do not meet their goal. Our estrangement from the natural environment produces apathy, resistance to change and addictive prejudices at all levels. This is an ecologically rooted psychological challenge, a problem that begs psychological solutions. For young or old alike, applied ecopsychology activities address this challenge. For this reason, we invite you to use, teach, and network the activity "In Balance With Earth." It is an Earth connected sensory rediscovery experience. It enables you to create and share moments in nature that let Earth touch you and teach you its balance.

The Giving Tree
Author: Shel Silverstein
Description: This book is about a tree that loves a boy, and is with him during the time that he grows up. The tree gives the boy everything it has: its leaves, shade, apples, and branches. Finally, the boy has grown very old, and the tree gives him the only thing that is left: a stump to sit on. It is a moving story about the gift of giving and the capacity to love, and helps show how the environment "takes care" of us.

Kansas State Collegian Each individual possesses the ability to make a positive difference in the environment through daily activities. This is the platform of Students Helping the Environment, a student organization concerned with increasing awareness of the importance of small contributions to making improvements to the environment. Students Helping the Environment, which has been in existence for about one year, has been busy with its first major project, Earth Day, which is Thursday. The group has planned activities for the week, with each day having a different subject and activities designed to inform the public, said Stacy Meredith, co-founder of Students Helping the Environment and senior in geography. There will be a composting demonstration this afternoon. There is a tour scheduled for the Hazardous Household Waste Center in Manhattan at 3 p.m Tuesday, and there will be a recycling forum at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the K-State Student Union. On Earth Day there will be a celebration at 5 p.m. in City Park, and food and drinks will be donated by various restaurants in Manhattan. From 6 to 8 p.m., there will be storytelling, environmental speakers and an open-microphone session where people can share their thoughts and observations. At 8 p.m., there will be music from local bands and musicians.

Earth Day: Recycling party, teach-in this week
A barbecue, prize drawings, and giveaways will be part of BFI's Earth Day celebration in San Carlos on Thursday, April 22. All San Mateo County residents are invited to visit the Recyclery at 333 Shoreway Road in San Carlos from noon to 6 p.m. on that day to learn how residents, schools and businesses can participate in recycling and environmental programs. At the celebration, residents can get free, unlimited amounts of mulch to reduce weed growth and help soil retain moisture in their garden. The mulch is made from recycled yard waste collected in BFI's curbside program. BFI will also hold free drawings for home composting bins, worth $89, and Earth Day T-shirts. BFI will host tours of the Recyclery and Transfer Station. Residents can see how recyclable materials are processed and how yard waste and garbage are transferred to Ox Mountain Sanitary Landfill in Half Moon Bay. San Mateo County's recycling staff will be on hand to provide information about reducing waste, home composting, disposing safely of household hazardous waste, and recycling used oil. BFI's staff will be available to answer questions. BFI will also mark the opening of its new aggregate waste recycling program, aimed at keeping dirt, concrete and asphalt out of the landfill.

"Earth Day is a commitment to make life better, not just bigger and faster; to provide real rather than rhetorical solutions. It is a day to re-examine the ethic of individual progress at mankind's expense. It is a day to challenge the corporate and government leaders who promise change, but who shortchange the necessary programs. It is a day for looking beyond tomorrow. April 22 seeks a future worth living. April 22 seeks a future."

New York Times
January 18, 1970
The celebratory event known as "Earth Day," created in 1969 and 1970, found its initial inspiration in the 1950s and 1960s, decades marked by tremendous social and cultural awareness, times of activism and change. One cultural concept around which millions of people began to rally was the environment. The legacy of environmental thought in the decades prior to the first Earth Day gave birth to the event in 1970. A body of environmental literature emerged in the United States which traced its roots to the colonial and post-Revolutionary War periods. The writings of Henry David Thoreau, John Muir, and George Perkins in the latter half of the 19th and in the 20th century stimulated and created a philosophy and ethic for the environment and concerns for nature and the wilderness.

First, the students come to the high school for a short presentation from the "Earth Protectors," a theatrical group that helps to teach kids "Reduce, Recycle, Rethink, Reuse." Then we use the high school's outdoor education area to create the "Enchanted Forest." The Enchanted Forest is where native species of animals come to life to teach the kids about their habitat, food, families, predators, and how man has affected their lives. High School students from the local ecology club are the ones to put on full costumes of these native species and learn in-depth all about those species. It's our second year, and we're very pleased with the results. Teachers and students are very impressed with the program and walk away with an experience that they don't forget. 17. WHY THE MARCH EQUINOX IS THE ONLY TRUE EARTH DAY
There would be no problem if the organizers of the April 22 earth day would callit by its original name Environmental teachIn or Eco day or any name
    http://www.wowzone.com/why-ed.htm
WHY THE MARCH EQUINOX IS THE ONLY TRUE EARTH DAY Throughout the many decades of my life previous to my founding of EARTH DAY March 21, 1970, I pondered over how the many differences that confront our world could find a peaceful resolution, instead of being in an almost constant confrontation. My key solution was to focus attention on the most important common ground and the positive values shared by adversaries. National holidays, as well as religious ones, have special days set: a good example of people coming together to peacefully celebrate. And so I, John McConnell, drew attention to a time that is celebrated by the entire world THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING: Nature's moment of the Equinox when the Sun crosses the celestial equator causing the length of day and night to be equal a state of equilibrium throughout the Earth. This is the true EARTH DAY, not because I selected it, but because it originates in the Earth's own rotation and revolution. The first day of Spring, a day that historically has been celebrated by people of every creed and culture is a day worthy of being a holiday of all of Earth's people. The first EARTH DAY, celebrated in the United States, was on March 21, 1970. It has been celebrated each year thereafter at the United Nations, bringing attention to its original purpose: peace, justice and the care of Earth.

    What is Earth Day ?
Celebrated every April 22, Earth Day is the largest, most celebrated environmental event worldwide. Earth Day was first launched as an environmental awareness event in the United States in 1970, and is now celebrated as the birth of the environmental movement.
The first Earth Day involved 20 million participants in teach-ins that addressed decades of environmental pollution. The event inspired the US Congress to pass clean air and clean water acts, and to establish the Environmental Protection Agency to research and monitor environmental issues and enforce environmental laws. Today we continue to push for a safer, cleaner environment. Earth Day is celebrated all over the world in recognition of the progress we have made and in recognition of environmental issues that still need to be addressed. Earth Day with EPA Communities continue to celebrate Earth Day by participating in activities to solve such global issues as air pollution, soil contamination, and global warming. The message of environmental responsibility will be reinforced through the activities and events associated with Earth Day. EPA is dedicated to working with communities to promote environmental responsibility on Earth Day and everyday. We have just discovered that there are two Official Earth Days. The one we have traditionally acknowledged is held on April 22 of each year, beginning in 1970. Earth Day 1970 was this nation's largest organized demonstration. It was a nationwide "teach-in" to dramatize America's environmental plight to a nation barely aware of its own environmental state. More than 20 million people participated in Earth Day 1970, giving birth to the modern environmental movement. This event helped to shape the values and priorities of an entire generation and altered American politics and policies. The following is an overview of what happened on that historical day in 1970: More than 20 million people participated in the events, listening to speeches, holding seminars and taking practical action to clean up the environment. New York City's Fifth Avenue was closed to traffic and more than 100,000 people attended an ecology fair in Central Park. Congress adjourned for the day and more than 500 of its members attended "teach-ins" at universities or made speeches about saving the environment. A smog-free car was paraded through downtown St. Louis, Missouri by the United Auto Workers of America.
