The March Earth Day was supported by United Nations Secretary General U Thant in 1971 and has been featured each year since then in an Earth Day Ceremony at the Peace Bell. It has played an important role in initiatives for peace and the care of Earth. The ringing of the Peace Bell signals the moment Spring begins. This is followed by two minutes of silent prayer or reflection a time for people to join worldwide in heartfelt dedication to think and act as trustees of Earth. The result: mass confusion because people in positions of power ignored the truth and supplanted the authentic Earth Day. While it has partially fulfilled its purpose, the undermining actions of April 22 organizers (see their many web sites) prevented the world from knowing about and participating in the March 20 Earth Day. However, this year the March Earth Day was featured in the Moscow press and celebrated on the Mir Space Station. (Costa Rica, Austria and Iran reported joining in the observance.) The authentic Earth Day in years past led to new attitudes that helped end communism in Russia. Now in its authentic Earth Day initiative, Moscow provides new hope for life on our planet! I think there needs to be some clarification about the issue of world views before I even make my comments about Earth Day. I think Earth Day proves the Christian world view, or at least is evidence for it. But I think that most people who practice Earth Day are living in a contradiction. Here is why I say that. A world view is just what one understands the structure of the world to be, the way someone believes the world really is. World views come in packages. They are like puzzles with particular parts of them fitting together. For example, if you believe that there is a God who is the moral standard of the universe, then moral rules seem to make sense because God establishes moral rules and we seek to obey those rules, there is a sense of "oughtness" and accountability such that, if we disobey the moral rules, there is punishment from the One who gave the moral rules. You may disagree whether there is a God and there are such moral rules. The point I'm making to you is there is a package effect to these beliefs. Moral rules seem to fit in with the idea of a Rule Maker. So the Christian world view fits in a certain package. Certain things follow from that world view. If God is God, then we are creatures who are created by Him. We are contingent beings. He is non-contingent. He makes the rules. We follow them. The world is a place that God created which we can discoverwe can make sense of it. These are all things that follow from a Christian world view. You see how that fits together?

DENIS HAYES TEETERS on the edge of a stiff chair inside the second-floor conference room of The Bullitt Foundation, where he serves as president. In fact, he seems to unfold his gangly, 6-foot-2 frame in sections, sometimes leaning so far back that he balances on the chair's hind two legs. His legs are cast stiffly at a 45-degree angle, one ankle atop the other. His wrists are wrapped behind his neck like a man reclining in a hammock. His large, intense eyes are lost in the glare from a skylight. "I have to warn you," he says in professorial tones. "This is not a very good story. It is completely out of context, and I can't tell it without sounding pretty flaky." Yet he plunges ahead, because I've asked if there was some epiphany that led a Camas boy who once aspired to become a doctor to abruptly change course and make an indelible mark in the environmental movement instead. Not only did he organize the inaugural Earth Day in 1970, which thrust environmental concerns into political equations, but he has maintained a place over the next three decades as one of its clearest and most respected voices. A delegation of Buddhist monks walked in support of Earth Day 1999, north of Bangkok, before attending religious services honoring the goals of the event.
