Reducing Earthquake Losses Throughout the United States
The Mississippi Valley-"Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On"
In the winter of 1811-12, the central Mississippi Valley was struck by three of the most powerful earthquakes in U.S. history. Even today, this region has more earthquakes than any other part of the United States east of the Rocky Mountains. Government agencies, universities, and private organizations are working to increase awareness of the earthquake threat and to reduce loss of life and property in future shocks. The 400 terrified residents in the town of New Madrid (Missouri) were abruptly awakened by violent shaking and a tremendous roar. It was December 16, 1811, and a powerful earthquake had just struck. This was the first of three magnitude-8 earthquakes and thousands of aftershocks to rock the region that winter.

Severe shaking accompanied the powerful New Madrid earthquakes that struck during the winter of 1811-1812. By winter's end, few houses within 250 miles of the Mississippi River town of New Madrid (Missouri) remained undamaged. Earthquake risk is high in much of the southern half of Alaska, but it is not the same everywhere. This map shows the overall geologic setting in Alaska that produces earthquakes. The Pacific plate (darker blue) is sliding northwestward past southeastern Alaska and then dives beneath the North American plate (light blue, green, and brown) in southern Alaska, the Alaska Peninsula, and the Aleutian Islands. Most earthquakes are produced where these two plates come into contact and slide past each other. Major earthquakes also occur throughout much of interior Alaska as a result of stresses generated at the plate boundary. (Click on map for a larger version - 77K. Note: The difficult-or-impossible-to-read fine print on the map is all contained in the text on this page.)

Earthquakes in BC Earthquakes in British Columbia
British Columbia experiences an earthquake every day, but only a small number of these quakes are noticeable and even fewer result in damage.
View of landslide on Mount Colonel Foster triggered by the June 23, 1946 Vancouver Island earthquake (photo courtesy of the Geological Survey of Canada). Several major earthquakes have hit B.C. in the last 100 years and there is a very good chance we will experience large earthquakes in the future. We live in a high-risk zone because of the geological processes that take place within the crust of the Earth in B.C. Plates in the Earth's surface shift to produce earthquakes and the science of geology can help determine which ground types will be most affected by a quake. An important step in ensuring your own safety is to understand the answers to the following questions: What causes earthquakes? How big are earthquakes? Where do they occur? What is a megathrust earthquake? ... How can geology be used to minimize risk? Note:

But No Cigar
The SF Earthquakes played noticably better in game 2, keeping the Puckheads down to 1 goal. Marcus pulled through with a matching goal to tie up the game. OT yielded no goals so a best of 5 shoot-out would decide the winner. The Puckheads' goalie surprised each Quakes shooter with a quick response, shutting them down. The Puckheads managed to make 2 shots, winning the game. "This has been an amazing season for us. This is best we have ever played. We look forward to next season an another chance at the championship." The season and playoffs are over.

The Turkey Research Centre translated a series of essays by Turkish schoolchildren about the August 17 1999 earthquake that killed some 18,000 people in Yalova, Izmit, Golcuk and Adapazari areas of Turkey. Since these essays were written, another earthquake in the nearby area around Bolu and Duzce on November 12th has killed another 800 people and left thousands homeless, some for the second time. The childrens' essays give an idea of the impact of the disaster. In response to many requests, we have now added to this site photographs taken during visits to the earthquake area by Turkey Research Centre volunteers. We hope to add more childrens' pictures soon. ... Shop or Compare Prices An earthquake is one of the most terrifying phenomena that nature can dish up. We generally think of the ground we stand on as "rock-solid" and completely stable. An earthquake can shatter that perception instantly, and often with extreme violence. Up until relatively recently, scientists only had unsubstantiated guesses as to what actually caused earthquakes. Even today there is still a certain amount of mystery surrounding them, but scientists have a much clearer understanding. Photo courtesy USGS A section of Interstate 880 in Oakland, California, damaged by the magnitude 7.1 earthquake that shook the San Francisco area in 1989. There has been enormous progress in the past century: Scientists have identified the forces that cause earthquakes, and developed technology that can tell us an earthquake's magnitude and origin. The next hurdle is to find a way of predicting earthquakes, so they don't catch people by surprise.
