Welcome to our Eating Disorders topic center. There are several different eating disorders, all linked together by their central characteristic of disordered eating behavior. By disordered, we mean to suggest conditions where normal eating habits are highly disrupted and polarized. In some eating disorders the patient ceases to eat at all, while in others, the patient may binge-eat, consuming extremely large servings of food in an out of control manner. In this topic center, we are concerned primarily with eating disorders of late adolescence and adulthood, including Anorexia, Bulimia, and Binge Eating Disorders. Eating (and Feeding) Disorders of childhood (such as Pica (the eating of non-food substances), Rumination Disorder, and Feeding Disorder of Infancy or Early Childhood are handled under our Childhood/Developmental Disorders topic heading. A cousin disorder to Anorexia, Bulimia is characterized by cycles of binge eating followed by misguided, sometimes dangerous attempts to purge already eaten food (via vomiting, taking laxatives, or exercising too much). Like anorexic patients, bulimic patients are often teenaged women whose self-esteem becomes inordinately tied into their perception of how they look. Unlike anorexics, though, bulimic patients typically maintain their normal weight. Food binges are often kept secrete, and following binges, it is common for patients to feel very ashamed of their loss of control, and to attempt to rid themselves of what they have eating by vomiting, exercising to the point where it interfere with normal routines, and fasting for a period of time thereafter

How Does Someone Know if He or She Has Binge Eating Disorder? Most of us overeat from time to time, and many people often feel they've eaten more than they should have. Eating a lot of food does not always mean that a person has binge eating disorder. Doctors generally agree that most people with serious binge eating problems often
  • feel their eating is out of control
  • eat what most people would think is an unusually large amount of food
  • eat much more quickly than usual during binge episodes
  • eat until so full they are uncomfortable
  • eat large amounts of food, even when they are not really hungry
  • eat alone because they are embarrassed about the amount of food they eat
  • feel disgusted, depressed, or guilty after overeating.
Binge eating also takes place in another eating disorder called bulimia nervosa.

The National eating disorders Screening Program will be held duringeating disorders Awareness Week, February 23 March 2, 2003.
http://www.mentalhealthscreening.org/eat.htm
The National Eating Disorders Screening Program will be held during Eating Disorders Awareness Week, February 23 - March 2, 2003. The National Eating Disorders Screening Program (NEDSP) is implemented during Eating Disorders Awareness Week and was held for the first time on more than 600 college campuses February 5-11, 1996. Originally designed only for college students, the program was held again in February, 1998 and was expanded to include the general population. In the year 2002, the program will expand once again, incorporating a High School component designed to address eating disorders in younger individuals. Special materials are being produced for this new component, with the assistance of the Massachusetts Eating Disorder Association, Inc ., and the Children’s Hospital Outpatient Eating Disorders Program in Boston. NEDSP represents the first large scale screening for eating disorders. The program includes an educational presentation on eating disorders and/or related topics (body image, nutrition, etc.), a written screening test and the opportunity to meet one-on-one with a health professional. It also provides individuals with information about how to help friends or family members who may be suffering from an eating disorder. NEDSP’s national office provides each site with materials for the screening and ideas for ways the program can be modified for use by colleges, hospitals, schools, or eating disorders clinics.

59. ANRED: Obesity. Is It An Eating Disorder?
FAQ provided by the Anorexia Nervosa and Related eating disorders, Inc. answers questions about definitions of obesity, health risks, weightloss pills, and what can be done.
http://www.anred.com/obese.html
Obesity. Is it an eating disorder?
Like most things, obesity is a complex phenomenon about which it is dangerous to generalize. What is true for one person is not necessarily true for the next. Nevertheless, we shall try to make sense out of conflicting theories and give answers to people who struggle to maintain self-esteem in a world that seems to be obsessed with youth, thinness, and the perfect body whatever that may be.
  • What is obesity?
A person with anorexia nervosa may define obesity as a weight gain of five pounds, from 89 to 94. A grandmother past menopause may call herself obese because she carries 165 pounds on her large-boned, muscular body. A modeling agency may talk about obesity when one of the women on the payroll puts 135 pounds on her 5'10" body. None of these women is clinically obese. The anorexic and the model are underweight. Men are split in their personal definitions of obesity. Many are just as concerned about overweight as women are, while others, frankly rotund, believe they are just fine, perfectly healthy, and universally attractive to potential romantic partners. Physicians consider a person to obese if s/he weighs more than 20% above expected weight for age, height, and body build. Morbid or malignant obesity is weight in excess of 100 pounds above that expected for age, height, and build.
