View photo gallery: Go>> A catastrophic die-off of lowland gorillas and chimpanzees at the very heart of their range in central Africa has been reported by scientists. Scientists working with the ECOFAC program (an EC-funded regional forest conservation program for central Africa) in northern Republic of Congo said today that they were witnessing what appears to be a massive decline in ape populations in the Lossi Gorilla Sanctuary (about 100 square miles/250 square kilometers) situated about 10 miles (15 square kilometers) to the southwest of the famous Odzala National Park (5,250 square miles/13,600 square kilometers). The region is thought to contain the majority of central Africa's lowland gorillas because of its isolation, the presence of several protected areas, and large undisturbed areas of habitat types particularly favored by gorillas. Wildlife Conservation Society veterinarian Annelisa Kilbourn, wearing a hazmat suit to guard against possible infection, collects tissue samples from a gorilla that died of Ebola virus in the Congo.

"It's a photo, but it's not like I have a test tube of it," O'Reilly said. "They still have that instant reaction. It makes people think of the paradox of something being beautiful but intellectually horrifying."

Bridging the Gaps in a Shrinking Globe William T. Close writes books that open the hearts and broaden the perspectives of those who read them for they deal with the human condition in very different parts of the world. "The earth is not a resting place. Man has elected to fight, not necessarily for himself, but for a process of emotional, intellectual, and ethical growth that goes on forever. To grow in the midst of dangers is the fate of the human race, because it is the law of the spirit."

Jules continued, "Everybody here prays for you, Yambuku. Keep up your courage. Stay in touch with us. Take the radio with you."

Augustina sat at the radio for a long time, absently fingering her rosary. They would not be flown out. It would be hard to tell Veronica and Antoine. They had all touched the bodies and linen of the sick and dying. There was no hope for them. When they saw Gérard’s terrible purple face, they shouted: "You and your gloves and all your beliefs in microbes. . . it is not that, it is not that at all." They threw the gloves and gowns onto the cadaver. "You whites always say there are germs and viruses, but we know differently."

    Introduction
Ebola is one of the most lethal viruses that infects primates. It has a mortality rate that ranges from 53-88%. It is endemic to Africa and to the Philippines. Due to its highly pathogenic nature, scientific research conducted on Ebola must be conducted in a Biosafety Level 4 laboratory (AIDS/HIV is a Biosafetly Level 2 virus). The constraint on scientific research that its nature has dictated has resulted in many significant gaps in what is known about it, and even larger gaps in what has been published about it. Its highly pathogenic nature has also resulted in a notable amount of misinformation that has been published. This web site is designed to present, in a review style, the data, previously published and unpublished, known about it to fill the knowledge gaps and to correct the misinformation.

POSTED 1 NOV 2000 Five years after the Ebola virus killed 286 people in Congo, the disease has reappeared in Uganda. Seventy-three people are dead to date. Ebola, one of the most destructive and fatal new infectious diseases, causes massive bleeding, and most victims die within a week. The disease is highly contagious and untreatable. Overview Anthrax Smallpox Ebola ... Plague Ebola hemorrhagic fever (Ebola HF) is a severe, often-fatal disease in humans and nonhuman primates (monkeys and chimpanzees) that has appeared sporadically since its initial recognition in 1976.
The disease is caused by infection with Ebola virus, named after a river in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) in Africa, where it was first recognized. The virus is one of two members of a family of RNA viruses called the Filoviridae. Three of the four species of Ebola virus identified so far have caused disease in humans: Ebola-Zaire, Ebola-Sudan, and Ebola-Ivory Coast. The fourth, Ebola-Reston, has caused disease in nonhuman primates, but not in humans.
Scientists and researchers are faced with the challenges of developing additional diagnostic tools to assist in early diagnosis of the disease and ecological investigations of Ebola virus and the disease it causes.
