New items all the time Ebola – A Serious Threat Col. Byron Weeks, M.D., Ret. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001
Dr. Weeks has had a distinguished medical and military career with the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps. He began military service as the youngest flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. After 15 years of military service, during which he served in senior posts, including Hospital Commander at Bitburg Air Force Base, Germany, Dr. Weeks retired and entered private practice. During the past two decades, he has focused his studies on the threat of biological and chemical agents as weapons of war. Dr. Weeks has lectured and written numerous articles on infectious diseases and biological warfare. A significant problem in dealing with biological attacks is that we may not be aware we have been subjected to such an attack until several days or weeks later.

Posted to the web February 10, 2003 Kampala Congolese health officials said Thursday at least 16 people died in the northern part of the country from the Ebola virus since the first of the year and they fear a wider outbreak of the deadly illness. Health ministry officials, speaking in the capital Brazzaville, said there could be additional outbreaks around the villages Kele and Mbou, about 800 kilometres north of the capital. The cases were discovered when tests confirmed that gorillas in the region had died after contracting the Ebola virus. Investigators determined that villagers got sick after eating meat from the infected gorillas.

What is clear is that proper precautions by medical personnel can mean the difference between an isolated case or two and an epidemic.
DESPITE MORE THAN two decades of investigation by scientists worldwide, it is not yet known where the virus is hiding or why it chooses to show its face at certain times and not others.
The first outbreak of Ebola occurred in 1976, at which time people were infected in in a western equatorial province of Sudan and in a nearby region of northern Zaire. It soon became clear that the outbreak in Zaire, now called the Democratic Republic of Congo, occurred because of poor hospital practices. But the contaminated needle was re-used, as were other needles and syringes, without being sterilized. As a result, Ebola spread from the infected patient to others. It was also transmitted through close contact between infected patients and hospital workers. A year later, there was an outbreak in Gabon in which 19 people were infected from a chimp they had butchered in the forest. At the same time, an ongoing 20-year study on the social behavior of chimpanzees in the Ivory Coast revealed that chimps were dying from Ebola there.

The Ebola Virus: Virology, Fiction and Threat to Mankind, F.A. Murphy
DR. FREDERICK A. MURPHY TALKS ABOUT THE EBOLA VIRUS An Interview by Sean Henahan, Access Excellence The book "The Hot Zone" and the film "Outbreak" have seized the public's imagination and brought into focus many issues regarding the very real threats posed by new and emerging diseases. In this interview we talk with Frederick A. Murphy, D.V.M., Ph.D., Dean of School of Veterinary Medicine, UC Davis. At the time of the 'Reston incident', Dr. Murphy was the director of the National Center for Infectious Diseases at the CDC in Atlanta. Dr. Murphy is considered one of the world authorities on viruses. He was the first one to look at Ebola virus 'face-to-face' in the electron microscope. Dr. Murphy appears in "The Hot Zone" and his now famous photo of the Ebola virus appears in the film "Outbreak". Note: Dr. Murphy has also provided an extensive [1]bibliography and[2] three excellent electron micrographs to accompany this interview. Q: The book "The Hot Zone" and more recently the film "Outbreak" have brought public attention to the reality of emerging viruses and potentially disastrous epidemics. It can be difficult to tell fact from fiction with these kind of sources. I'd like to ask some questions gathered from high school science teachers and students all over the country to clarify some of the issues raised by this book and this movie.

by Paul L Daniels - Saturday, November 18th 2000 08:30 PST About:
Ebola is used as a bridge between AV engines (e.g., Sophos) and scanning scripts (e.g., Inflex and AMaViS) to provide much-improved performance by handling file scanning requests on behalf of the scripts while keeping a SINGLE session of the AV engine open, rather than restarting one each time. Level 4: Virus Hunters of the CDC , by Joseph B. McCormick and Sue Fisher-Hoch, both physicians, tells many stories of treating high-morbidity, high-mortality diseases in developing countries. It is an interesting book that continues several stories that have been emerging over the past five years - emerging viruses, of course, but also bacterial resistance, safe handling of infectious material, the dangers of used needles, and, of course, the environmental conditions that predispose humans to contract disease. Here are some short book reviews and links to sites with documents that treat primarily Ebola. Short reviews of books treating medical ecology and the history of medicine may be found at Books of Medical and Healthcare Interest . A longer review of Level 4: Virus Hunters of the CDC appears in the August 2, 1996, edition of The Net Net
