Reviews
The Wall Street Journal, Todd G. Buchholz
... a lively and provocative look at everything from trade policy to environmentalism to affirmative action.... In a clever and accessible way, he exposes a lot of bad economic reasoning that even Barney could see through. Reason, Nicholas Schulz
This University of Chicago-educated mathematician and economist is a serious academic. But his true gifts lie elsewhere: He makes complicated economic and public policy issues accessible to a general audience and, like Hazlitt before him, forces the reader to challenge previously unexamined assumptions that muddle public debate.... The book's breezy tone and light-hearted title belie the thoughtfulness and scholarly sophistication that undergird almost every assertion that Landsburg makes, no matter how outrageous. The book is part primer on economics and public policy, part tutorial on the value of skeptical inquiry. From Kirkus Reviews , October 1, 1997

Econ 101: Is this the Best Way to Teach Economics? Ronald A. Wirtz
Contributing Writer For most academic subjects—math, English, biology, chemistry—students come to post-secondary courses with at least some familiarity from high school. This is often not the case for economics, as the previous articles attest. College-level intro courses are likely the first—and only—economics courses that many students will take. Are these courses, then, and the texts employed to teach them, doing the job? A survey of economics professors provides some answers, and some ideas for change.
Some balance in the teaching of economics is necessary, says Harvard economics professor Gregory Mankiw. It can be easy for professors to fall into the trap of too much technical and theoretical material, Mankiw says. "After all, economics professors love economics, and often this love came quite naturally. As instructors, we have to remind ourselves that not all our students are just like us." Sidebar

Here are some videos that teach lessons in economics. Well, maybe they don’t all teach much, but they are all fun to watch. Other People’s Money This movie stars Danny Devito and is one of my personal favorites. This is one of the only movies that Hollywood gets right. Watch to the very end, and you will see what great things happen if resources freely flow to their most valued use. Heir Conditioned This lecture on economics by Elmer Fudd is the best I have ever heard. I have not seen this cartoon in years, but it is a treat if you ever catch it. The Day the Universe Changed Connections Connections Connections These shows are the ultimate celebration of the scientist/entrepreneur. James Burke explains how scientific innovation drives society. What is the motivation? Necessity or profit. Government is almost never involved. Greed This piece by John Stossel challenges the conventional wisdom that capitalism is bad. This, along with some of his other reporting about organically grown food, got him into hot water. The Secret of My Success Michael J. Fox works hard to climb the corporate ladder.

    About the Department of Economics
Foto: Per Bernál Department Chairperson: Professor Tore Ellingsen When the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE) was founded in 1909, Eli Heckscher was appointed the first professor in the Department of Economics. Together with his student Bertil Ohlin, Heckscher developed the most influential model of international trade today: the Heckscher-Ohlin model where international trade is driven by differences in relative factor endowments. Ohlin was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1977 for this contribution. Today, faculty in the Department of Economics are mainly involved in three activities: teaching in the undergraduate program, teaching in the graduate program, and conducting academic research. Undergraduate Program Every year a class of around 300 students enter the SSE undergraduate program. Admission to the undergraduate program is highly competitive and with around 3500 applicants, the SSE is the most selective institution of higher education in Sweden. In the first two years of undergraduate study, economics faculty teach required courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, international economics and Swedish economic policy. In the final two years of undergraduate study, students choose from five majors offered by the SSE. Economics faculty teach courses in the "International Economics and Business" major. Recent courses taught by the economics faculty in this major include the economics of organization, health economics, mathematics for economists, international trade and industrial organization. In the academic year 2000-2001, three of the five persons nominated by students for the "SSE Teacher of the Year" award were professors in the Department of Economics.

BASF employees teach local students about economics through JA GEISMAR, La., May 30, 2002 - Three BASF Geismar employees recently had seventh grade students at Galvez Middle bursting with new ways to market popcorn, just one activity through a Junior Achievement (JA) program that taught the students about economics. Scott Caylor and Rob Osterhold recently finished teaching an eight-week Junior Achievement course to students in two of "Coach" Rene Bourgeois' classes at Galvez Middle School. Jeffrey Jones taught in one of Charmon Lemaire's classes at the school. "Both the students and I learned a lot and had a lot of fun," said Caylor of his first experience as a JA volunteer teacher. "I definitely plan on teaching another class during the next school year." "I really enjoyed teaching the kids. I worked with Junior Achievement years ago, so I knew that the program would be good," said Osterhold. Founded in 1919, Junior Achievement is the oldest, largest and fastest-growing business and economic education not-for-profit organization in the world. The JA program the BASF employees used was Enterprise in Action®, which describes the principal characteristics of the U.S. economic system and the role of business within the system.

    Innovative staff development:

    Curriculum Integration and Creative Education.
Let's see what we can do for your staff! Economics is often treated as the ugly stepchild of the Social Studies. Not as glamorous as history or as concrete as geography, it tends to get a passing treatment as it incidentally pops up in the curriculum. Perhaps it is because its concepts tend to be more sophisticated and hard to master. Or maybe it's because it seems as much a kin to Math as it does the humanities. Whatever the reason, economics does not get its due in the classroom. This week's links are offered in the hopes it will make the inclusion of economics in instruction a little less difficult and maybe even a little more fun. There will not be an IT Newsletter next week as we break for Thanksgiving, but we will resume on December 2nd with an edition dedicated to virtual science museums - can't wait! Enjoy this week's newsletter - there were so many good sites I couldn't limit it to a digital dozen!
