The smallest country in the rugged Andean highlands, Ecuador is among the most rewarding travel destinations in South America. With its array of vibrant indigenous cultures, well preserved colonial architecture, otherworldly volcanic landscapes and dense rainforest, it packs its perimeters with more points of interest than many countries twice its size. Touch down in its picture-perfect capital, Quito, and you are no more than a day's drive from a slog through all-swallowing Amazonian jungle, a snow swept ascent of an active volcano, a sociable haggle with indigenous artesanos or a welcome wallow on a tropical beach. And all that in a nation no bigger than the US state of Nevada.
Warning
Though most travel in Ecuador is relatively safe, economic instability provoking unrest in the country's recent past does warrant that extra bit of caution from the traveler. Since the national state of emergency declared in January 2001 - in the wake of a popular uprising inspired by the Council of Indigenous Nations of Ecuador (CONAIE) and the resignation of ex-president Jamil Mahaud - the security situation has been shaky. The aftermath saw riot police and protesters going to battle, general strikes, road blockades and even bombings. That said, things have settled down of late, and street crime - usually of a non-violent nature - in Quito and Guayaquil remains the most common hazard to those on the tourist trail. Travel to the northeastern regions, particularly Sucumbios and Orellana provinces, is not advised. If you really must be in the Colombia-Ecuador border areas (again, not advised), exercise sense and caution. Oh, and it's a good idea to steer clear of mass demonstrations, as these often have potential to unleash all sorts of nasties, from both protesters and police. Most importantly, just stay aware of what's going on locally and in the world.

    - Climate
    • The climate varies according to the different altitudes. In the Eastern Lowland it is hot and humid all day with only a light rainfall occasionally. The Coastal Lowland is a plain that ranks from 12-100 miles long and covers a fourth of Ecuador. Here it is mostly hot and humid. The Andes Highland is a series of peaks that rise up to almost 20,000 feet above sea level.
Some widely known natural resources of Ecuador are fish, oil, gold, timber, and a variety of minerals.

Charles Darwin I Ecuador's climate is equally generous to the traveler. Embracing the Pacific, Ecuador rests squarely on the equator (hence its name). Here, seasons are defined more by rainfall than temperature. A warm rainy season lasts from January to April, and May through December is characterized by a cooler, drier period that is ideally timed for a summer trip. interKnowledge Corp

Culture
Ecuador has a deeply ingrained cultural heritage, the first agricultural villages and ceramic production of the Americas being associated with what is now coastal Ecuador. Quito came to be the northern capital of the Inca empire, the largest political unit of pre-Columbian America. Ecuador's colonial religious architecture is predominantly baroque, although domestic architecture tends to be simple and elegant, comprising whitewashed verandahed houses built around a central courtyard. Traditional Andean music has a distinctive haunting quality based on an unusual pentatonic scale. Wind and percussion instruments, including bamboo panpipes and flutes, create the foundation of the sound. Local crafts include fine examples of basketry, leather work, woodcarving, weaving, ceramics and jewellery. The most importand ecuadorian artist of the 20th century is Oswaldo Guayasamin (1919-1999). With his unique style he has still a great influence to artists in hole South america. The predominant religion is Roman Catholic, but there is a scattering of other Christian faiths. Indigenous Ecuadorians, while outwardly Catholic, tend to blend Catholicism with their traditional beliefs. Spanish is the main language, although most highland Indians are bilingual, with Quechua being their preferred language and Spanish their second tongue. Several small lowland groups speak their own languages. English is understood in the best hotels and in airline offices and travel agencies, but it's of little use elsewhere.

The Inca were a dynamic, rapidly advancing society. They originated in a pocket of Peru, but established a vast empire within a century. It dominated Peru and extended as far as Bolivia and central Chile. The Inca constructed massive, monumental cities. To communicate across their empire they laid wide, stone-paved highways thousands of kilometers long and sent chains of messengers along them. These mailmen passed each other records of the empire's status, which were coded in system of knots along a rope. A winded runner could even rest in the shade of trees planted along both sides of the road. Remarkably, the Canari, Quitu, and Caras were able to hold back Tupac-Yupanqui, though they proved less successful against his son, Huayna Capac. After conquering Ecuador, Huayna Capac indoctrinated the tribes to Quechua, the language of the Incas, which is still widely spoken in Ecuador. In celebration of his victory, Huayna Capac ordered a great city to be built at Tomebamba, near Cuenca. Its size and influence rivaled the capital of Cuzco in Perua rivalry that would mature with posterity. When he died in 1526, Huayna Capac divided the empire between his two sons, Atahualpa and Huascar. Atahualpa ruled the northern reaches from Tombebamba, while Huascar held court over the south from Cuzco. The split inheritance was an unconventional and fateful move, as the first Spaniards arrived in the same year. On the eve of Pizarro's expedition into the empire, the brothers entered into a civil war for complete control.

Artists of the Ecuadorian Andes
The artists of Tigua are renowned for their colorful paintings depicting village life high in the mountains of rural Ecuador. Living much as they have lived for centuries, families herd sheep and llamas and cultivate a variety of potatoes and grains in small communities perched on the windswept slopes of the Andes mountains. Their language is Quichua, the language of the Incas. Though they have acquired many modern ways, their customs, and indeed their paintings, still reflect this ancient heritage. The paintings, mostly done on sheep hide, depict the customs, festivals, myths and dreams of indigenous people. The art form originated with the painting of small drums used in traditional festivals and ceremonies. In the early 1970's, one of the local artists, a community leader named Julio Toaquiza, began to paint on hide stretched over a flat frame. Since then, he has inspired a whole generation of artists. Many of the frames are also painted with intricate colors and designs.
