    Ecuador: History
    History through the 19th Century
Prior to the arrival of the Spaniards, Ecuador was controlled by the Inca empire. Francisco Pizarro's subordinate, , entered the area in 1533. Not finding the wealth of the mythical El Dorado, he and other conquistadors, notably Gonzalo Pizarro and Orellana , moved restlessly on and the region became a colonial backwater. Given an audiencia in 1563 and established politically as the presidency of Quito, it was at various times subject to Peru and to New Granada Sucre in the battle of Pichincha to Greater Colombia. Flores that year. Boundary disputes led to frequent invasions by Peruvians in the 19th and 20th centuries. The entire eastern frontier, known as Oriente, was in dispute. (In 1942, Ecuador signed a treaty ceding a large area to Peru, but in 1960 it renounced the treaty.) Bitter internecine struggles between Conservatives and Liberals marked the political history of Ecuador in the 19th century. The Conservatives, led by Flores and (1821-75), supported entrenched privileges and the dominance of the Roman Catholic Church; the Liberals, led by

    Early History
Common archeological wisdom has it that South America's first inhabitants arrived in South America about 14,000 years ago, after their ancestors came across what we now call the Bering Strait. (Recently, this view has been disputed.)
Stone-age tools dated to 9000 BC have been discovered in the Quito area. The earliest known sign of a developed culture dates to 3200 BC. Examples of these cultures can be seen in museums in Quito and Guayaquil. Pre-Inca tribes existed, but most of their history is lost to time and legend. The earliest details, dated about 11th century AD, are of two dominant tribes: the Caras in the coastal areas and the Quitus in the sierra highlands. The ambitious Caras, led by Shyri, conquered the Quitus, although some historians believe this to have been peaceful. The Inca Empire The defeat of the northern tribe took many years, and Huayana Capac grew up in Ecuador. After succeeding his father to the throne, he spend many years traveling throughout his empire dealing with various uprisings. He often strengthened his position by marriages. One of them, to the daughter of the defeated Cacha Duchicela, produced a son, Atahualpa.

Estrella, Eduardo. BIODIVERSITY IN ECUADOR: HISTORY AND REALITY Quito: National Museum of Medicine of Ecuador, United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Secretary Pro Tempore of the Treaty of Amazonian Cooperation, 1993. 103 pp. ISBN:9978-82-404-9. The review was translated by Janet Groff Greever, Robert Hook and Carolyn Hook. Nature was excessively lavish in Ecuador, Eduardo Estrella tells us in this documented study. Its residents have been blessed with a great privilege, and at the same time, with a tremendous responsibility. Because of its spatial characteristics, Ecuador has been and continues to be a privileged place to live. At this point, it becomes evident that there is a conflict between development and conservation. Development, which is a process considered good for humans, only merits this name when it is sustaining; and that, in its turn, only succeeds when population (social), production (economic), and the environment are kept in equilibrium. That is to say, development succeeds only when each action taken is necessary, obligatory and simultaneously socially just, economically profitable and environmentally sustainable.

Charles Darwin I Ecuador's climate is equally generous to the traveler. Embracing the Pacific, Ecuador rests squarely on the equator (hence its name). Here, seasons are defined more by rainfall than temperature. A warm rainy season lasts from January to April, and May through December is characterized by a cooler, drier period that is ideally timed for a summer trip. interKnowledge Corp

The Republic of Ecuador Pre Colombian History For 12,000 years Ecuador has been home to various civilizations. Early cultures celebrated the history of their forefathers through songs, dances, and story telling. Oral history was an important part of religious ceremonies. Little of this history remains today. The Spanish forcefully converted the indigenous culture to Catholicism, religious ceremonies were abandoned and many of the stories forgotten. The tales that endured are of the Inca's who arrived in Ecuador shortly before the Spanish. Information about earlier cultures is attributed to the archeological treasures discovered throughout the country. Ecuador is a young country archeologically speaking, the importance of unearthing and preserving ruins does not have the enthusiastic support of the country and scientists as in Mexico, Peru, Egypt or Turkey. Many of the country's ruins remain buried, left simply as a mysterious symbol of an earlier culture. One can only imagine what has left to be discovered. Opportunities to learn about Pre-Colombian cultures include the well-preserved ruins in Machalilla and Ingapirca or visiting one of the excellent museums housing a collections of art work and tools. The first known culture of Ecuador is the Las Vegas, a group of hunters and gathers who lived on the Santa Elena Peninsula between the Guavas Basin and Salinas. Living in houses and making textiles they enjoyed a varied economy and they existed by farming crops including maize and squash, hunting, and exploiting the mangroves for wood, oysters and other seafood. The museum "Museo de los Amantes de Sumpa" near Santa Elena houses displays of the Las Vegas and tells the story of their culture.

The Conquest of Ecuador Inca Expansion Incan ruins like these are scattered throughout the Ecuadorian countryside. The history of Ecuador is better known from the point of the Inca expansion than during the Pre-Columbian era, though even after the Inca conquered Ecuador many holes remain because of the limited recorded history they kept. In 1463 the Inca warrior Pachacuti and his son Topa Yupanqui began conquering Ecuador. By the end of 15th century, despite fierce resistance by several Ecuadorian tribes, Huayna Capac, Topa Yupanqui's son, conquered all of Ecuador. The Inca ruled the Ecuadorian Kingdoms until the arrival of Francisco Pizarro, Diego de Almargo and a force of Spanish conquistadors in 1532. During the period of Inca control, the Ecuadorian tribesmen assimilated agricultural practices and the social organization of the Inca, but they maintained their traditional religious beliefs and many customs. Ecuador's indigenous population would suffer far worse under Spanish rule than it did under the Inca.

The smallest country in the rugged Andean highlands, Ecuador is among the most rewarding travel destinations in South America. With its array of vibrant indigenous cultures, well preserved colonial architecture, otherworldly volcanic landscapes and dense rainforest, it packs its perimeters with more points of interest than many countries twice its size. Touch down in its picture-perfect capital, Quito, and you are no more than a day's drive from a slog through all-swallowing Amazonian jungle, a snow swept ascent of an active volcano, a sociable haggle with indigenous artesanos or a welcome wallow on a tropical beach. And all that in a nation no bigger than the US state of Nevada.
    Warning
Though most travel in Ecuador is relatively safe, economic instability provoking unrest in the country's recent past does warrant that extra bit of caution from the traveler. Since the national state of emergency declared in January 2001 - in the wake of a popular uprising inspired by the Council of Indigenous Nations of Ecuador (CONAIE) and the resignation of ex-president Jamil Mahaud - the security situation has been shaky. The aftermath saw riot police and protesters going to battle, general strikes, road blockades and even bombings. That said, things have settled down of late, and street crime - usually of a non-violent nature - in Quito and Guayaquil remains the most common hazard to those on the tourist trail. Travel to the northeastern regions, particularly Sucumbios and Orellana provinces, is not advised. If you really must be in the Colombia-Ecuador border areas (again, not advised), exercise sense and caution. Oh, and it's a good idea to steer clear of mass demonstrations, as these often have potential to unleash all sorts of nasties, from both protesters and police. Most importantly, just stay aware of what's going on locally and in the world.
