The tomb was important because it let archaeologists record what an egyptianking's tomb looked like and learn more about ancient egypt.
http://carlos.emory.edu/ODYSSEY/EGYPT/arch.html
Why is King Tut So Famous? Archaeology! The tomb of King Tutankhamen is one of the most famous because of its well-known discovery by Howard Carter, a British archaeologist. Carter excavated in the Valley of the Kings for eleven years before he discovered Tut's tomb in 1922. Tutankhamen wasn't an especially important king, but his tomb was the only royal burial found intact in modern times. The tomb was important because it let archaeologists record what an Egyptian king's tomb looked like and learn more about ancient Egypt. One of King Tutankhamen's Nobles is now in Rochester, New York! This relief depicts Maya, an important official during the reign of three pharaohs: Tutankhamen, Ay, and Horemhab. He supervised the preparation of the tombs of these pharaohs, collected taxes for them, and performed other tasks to serve the king. The Memorial Art Gallery bought this carving in 1942. It originally decorated the inside wall of Maya's tomb in Saqqara, the necropolis of the ancient city of Memphis, southwest of Cairo. How did it get to Rochester? Here Today, Gone Tomorrow....The Discovery of Maya's Tomb.

at amazon.com: Wonderful Things I am rather curiously observing my own interest in ancient Egypt. I have a true fascination with the pyramids, sphinx, pharaohs, and all that goes along with them. But I can't really figure out from whence this interest came! When I was in school, history and other social science classes were my least favorite courses. As a matter of fact, I somehow got through college without ever having to take a history course and slept through most of my sociology class lectures. But now, many years later, I'm finding myself with an...well, I won't call it an obsession...but with an absolute passion for learning about ancient Egypt. I just can't get enough! It has led us to faraway places in search of Egyptian artifacts (see our family's travel page for the trip diaries and photos.) I've also been collecting web resources and books and videos galore. On view in the Permanent Galleries:
The Egyptian and Ancient Near Eastern Gallery Included in these exhibitions are Dynastic Egyptian objects related to funerary practices, as well as objects from several excavations in the Near East. An installation of domestic materials from the site of Karanis, a Graeco-Roman town in Egypt, is displayed within a full-scale reconstruction of a house and courtyard, affording visitors the opportunity to view objects of daily life in their proper context.
The Greek and Roman gallery features the Museum's installation of sculpture, pottery, glass and other objects from the permanent collections.
In the Medieval Middle East Gallery, an exhibition of early Islamic inscribed textiles are on display. The Kelsey Museum is fortunate to possess an extraordinary series of textile documents from the early Islamic world (10th to 13th centuries CE). In a variety of materials, weaves, embroideries and ornamental schemes, these textiles were most frequently used for clothing. They also displayed a wealth of information. The earliest and most prestigious of them, called tiraz, name the official factories in which they were made, and the recipient for whom the caliph had them made, as well as quotations from the Koran. These were extremely important documents of high status, keenly sought after and widely imitated.

Photos courtesy of Huvishka Mustamandy " Would the Afghan people want the statues to be reconstructed?" I asked. "Mr. Bucherer," Weber said, "...asked the Afghan interim government 'which would you prefer with this money, thirty new bridges or the Buddha statues?' They overwhelmingly wanted the statues. It's a symbolic thing that they have opened up their country and have reinstalled an open society." I asked, "there is an argument over whether the statues should actually be reconstructed. Some even say it would be tacky. What are your thoughts?" "I am very familiar with these arguments. My fantasy for the reconstruction was triggered by Abu Simbel, a huge Egyptian temple built by Rameses II that was moved to higher ground when the high dam was being constructed in the nineteen-sixties." He added, "this move was supported by the international community. It is proof that you can reconstruct something old (and still maintain its integrity.)"
