42. Sinai - The Bedouin
Basic explanation of Bedouin history, culture, and current status in the Middle East.
http://www.interknowledge.com/egypt/sinai/bedouin.htm
Bedu , the Arabic word from which the name bedouin is derived, is a simple, straightforward tag. It means "inhabitant of the desert," and refers generally to the desert-dwelling nomads of Arabia, the Negev, and the Sinai. For most people, however, the word "bedouin" conjures up a much richer and more evocative imageof lyrical, shifting sands, flowing robes, and the long, loping strides of camels. For several centuries, such images were not far from the truth. In the vast, arid expanses of the Sinai, as in the Negev and the deserts of Arabia, the many tribes of the bedouin journeyed by camel from oasis to oasis, following a traditional way of life and maintaining a pastoral culture of exceptional grace, honor, and beauty. Most of the bedouin tribes of the Sinai are descended from peoples who migrated from the Arabian peninsula between the 14th and 18th centuries, making the bedouin themselves relatively recent arrivals in this ancient land. Today, many of the bedouin of the Sinai have traded their traditional existence for the pursuits and the conventions of the modern world, as startling changes over the last two decades have irrevocably altered the nature of life for the bedouin and for the land they inhabit. Nonetheless, bedouin culture still survives in the Sinai, where there is a growing appreciation of its value and its fragility.

A large tomb-chapel of the New Kingdom has been found. The rings bearing the names of Tutankhamun and his wife Ankhesenamun, and other numerous finds indicate that the site was one of the major cemetery in the period of the late 18th Dynasty to the early 19th Dynasty. Recently a large granite sarcophagus was found in the innermost substructure of the tomb-chapel, and inscribed name "Mes" on the lid has been found. Three shaft tombs located around the tomb-chapel were excavated in Spring 1999 in order to clarify the character of this cemetery. The latest site plan has been available. The substructures of the tombs are shown by VRML.

Somewhere around 1375 years before the birth of Christ , an Egyptian pharaoh publicly changed his name. That change signalled a return to long-standing tradition, a hallmark of Egyptian culture that flourished for more than three thousand years peacefully in the rich Nile River valley. The king had been called Tutankhaton. The last portion of his name, aton , was the name for the sun-god, which, in the years before the king's reign, had achieved preeminence among the competing deities in Egyptian religious tradition. The king changed his name to the one by which he is known today TUTANKHAMEN or, more popularly, King Tut and ended the brief experiment in monotheism in favor of the older religion with its promise of an afterlife.
And what an afterlife the pharaoh would have! Embalmed in order to endure the elements of disintegration, richly attired to attest to his fabulous earthly wealth, magnificently housed to remind all on-lookers of the towering greatness of the entombed human the pharaoh lived on in perpetual association with the stone structures that rose portentously out of the hot, barren sands of the desert so close to the life-giving, greening Nile. And the solemn bearing of these great structures reminds people today of the human hope for immortality and the way an entire culture fashioned a collective immortality in astonishing stone. Here was a culture that would persist, just as its pharaohs would live on in their silent palaces.

Why Study Ancient World Cultures?
An Essay by Bill Hemminger The question that initiates this program is a broad one: Why study ancient cultures? You might feel that the question is moot: students do study and will study ancient cultures; such study is an expected part of a tradition of intellectual development. The response to the why of the initial question is a matter of tradition, if not fact. A study of the ROMAN EMPIRE a reading of Greek philosophy and literature, a look at the PYRAMIDS OF EGYPT these are all accepted parts of a Western education, aren't they? Probably so: even today, in the plurality of approaches to the study of history and to the study of cultures, people talk about PLATO or DANTE or Krishna or Mohammed. But there is an important proviso: How you approach ancient cultures (or any other culture, for that matter) and how you conceive of the people of such distant worlds are of paramount importance. At this point, you might ask yourself these two additional questions: Do we study these cultures because, to some extent, all cultures share certain characteristics? Does our own culture reflect aspects of these other cultures? The answer to the first of the two questions has historically been found in a discussion of universality. Consider, for a moment, the case of Arjuna in

Akhet Hwt-Hrw Ancient Egypt . . . For most people these words conjure images of massive temples, pyramids and tombs; with secret rituals invoking the power of Gods from another age. The world's oldest religious writings come from Egypt, yet few people understand this mysterious and powerful system of spirituality. Akhet is a spiritual organization dedicated to following this ancient legacy. By drawing upon the actual practices and teachings of Egypt from the Pagan era, as revealed by temple inscriptions and papyrus texts, Akhet seeks to reawaken these ancient truths in order to achieve a balanced, healthy spiritual life style for today. Akhet Hwt-Hrw is a temple and school of Ancient Egyptian religion and magic. With the resurgence of Pagan philosophies and disciplines, we offer a realistic and practical approach to this ancient system of spirituality for today. The pages listed here give information about the religion and culture of Ancient Egypt; Egyptian Gods and Goddesses, including Hathor, Sekhmet, Bast, Isis, Horus, Osiris, Ra and many more; Egyptian Temples; the concepts of God and Goddess within the Egyptian spiritual tradition; rituals and magic/magick, with pages containing actual temple translations of invocations.
