The history of Egypt can be traced 5,000 years back as a remarkable way of life, or civilization, grew up along the banks of the Nile River in Egypt. It flourished for over 3,000 years, longer than most other civilizations in the world's history. It lies between Africa and the Middle East. This ancient country holds many exciting attractions for travelers. The Pyramids, the Sphinx, the tomb of young King Tut are just a few attractions that interest and excite people of all ages. Egyptian history begins around 3300 BC. From 3100 BC inscriptions created a way for later Egyptians. It was also the time when the pharaoh, King Menes, created Egypt by uniting the two parts of Egypt, also known as Upper and Lower Egypt, into a single kingdom. He started Memphis in the north and Abydos in the south as his capital cities.

Introduction When a pyramid was built, a whole host of support services appeared in the vicinity to maintain it. Housing was needed for the priests who manned the temples, and also for the guards who protected the corpse of pharaoh from people who would like to get their hands on the treasures entombed in the pyramid and the jewellery placed on the body. Farms were needed to provide food for the workers, and so on. Egypt - History * The recorded history of Egypt goes back for at least a thousand years, as is evident from the ruined monuments, pyramids and temples. * It was the Romans who overshadowed the Egyptian dynasties, Egypt then lapsed into relative obscurity and it remained this way until the armies of Islam overran the country following the death of the Prophet Mohammed. * Cairo shortly became one of the greatest centres of Islamic culture. * Egypt later became part of the Turkish Empire, the Sultans becoming virtual recluses inside the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. * The Janissaries led Egypt into autonomous rule, these were mercenary troops of the Turks. The country declined under corruption and cultural decline. * It was not until the late 19th century when the British took over, that the corruption ended. The British took over due to Egypt's inability to finance her foreign debts. * In the 19th century there was a period of rivalry between the British and the French for political control and trading concessions in Egypt. * During the 19th century also, de Lesseps conceived of and built the Suez canal. This has profited the country greatly, but due to the fact that it was privately owned up to the 1950s by the British and French shareholders, a large percentage of its income by-passed the Egyptian economy.

THE ROUTE OF THE EXODUS JOURNEYS Part 1 (Originally published in January 1993) The first in-depth study we will present will be the events of the Exodus journey, beginning with the time the multitude leaves Egypt until they cross the Red Sea. A map is attached for reference. We will systematically take each step of their journey. We do not continue their journey once they cross the Red Sea and enter Midian, but we do show on the map the location of Mt. Sinai. FIRST, LOCATE MIDIAN As I began to study the Biblical account, in Exodus 3, Moses encounters the burning bush while he is in Midian, tending the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law. There, God tells Moses that he is to bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt: EXODUS 3:12; "And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: "When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain." Moses was told in this verse to bring them back to Midian, to the mountain where God spoke to him. In my studies of ancient Egyptian history, it became clear to me that Midian was not in the Sinai peninsula—that it was in northwestern Saudi Arabia: GALATIANS 4:25; is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.". All through the Sinai peninsula there is tremendous evidence of the ancient Egyptians having control of this area. The inscriptions tell of their mining operations there. There are temples out there as well as fortresses. Had Moses led the people across the Gulf of Suez, they would have still been in Egyptian-controlled territory.

The oldest dynasty known, the 1st dynasty, dates from 2900 BC to 2770 BC (all dates are approximate dates). The famous great pyramids were built during the 4th dynasty by Khufu (Cheops) 2551-2528 BC, Khaefra (Chephren) 2520-2494 and Menkaura (Mykerinus) 2490-2472 BC. The establishment of the Egyptian civilization coincides with the 'drying up' of the Sahara desert. While the Sahara was green pastoral grazing land before 3000 BC, this drastic climatic change (disaster) caused the peoples to migrate. Thus the Nile valley became the densely populated stretch of land it still is. There has been some furious scholarly debate about who the ancient Egyptians were. The old sources, like Herodotus, claim the Egyptians were black, like the Ethiopians - and in this respect very different from other peoples inhabiting the coasts of the Mediterranean. It seems that in the ancient world there was no doubt about to which race the Egyptians belonged: they were blacks. During the European colonial era - from 1800 onwards - a scientific tendency emerged to paint the Egyptians 'white'. This popular vision still survives today, stimulated by the fact that present-day Egyptians are predominantly of Arab stock, thus officially part of the 'white' race. Thus, we see actors as Yul Brynner playing the role of Pharaoh in Hollywood spectacles. I remember there's one Michael Jackson video clip in which Eddy Murphy appears as Pharaoh. This picture is probably much closer to the truth.

This accident was caused by a fire, possibly started by a passenger - and not a crash. One thoery is that the fire could have been started by a passenger preparing food Egypt has a comprehensive rail network. There is a high standard rail service available to tourists and Egyptians who can afford it. However, most Egyptian rail passenger travel packed into cramped compartments on old, slow trains. Passengers on long-haul journeys often carry large amounts of baggage, take small animals onto the trains and prepare their own meals - sometimes using portable gas cookers.
