dated November 6, 1952: Eisenhower elected U.S. President Mr. Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected to be the new President of the United States, and thereby become the first Republican to hold the top office in 20 years. The retired Army General's Democratic Party opponent, Governor Adlai Stevenson, conceded the election early on November 5, after returns from all parts of America had shown Mr. Eisenhower being swept into the White House by a landslide vote, "Ike", as he was popularly known from the days of his eventful tenure as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces in Europe, was to take over from President Truman on January 20, 1953. Dwight D. Eisenhower was almost as well-known to people outside the United States as within his country. To millions of people throughout the world, "Ike" was the man who had led the Allied Forces in Western Europe to victory in World War II and who later welded together the armed forces of 14 nations into the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).

President Dwight David Eisenhower
Served 1953-1957, 1957-1961 Dwight David Eisenhower was born October 14, 1890, in Denison, Texas, as David Dwight Eisenhower. His family moved to Abilene, Kansas, where he worked for a time in a creamery until he took and passed exams for the Military Academy and was appointed to West Point. There, he picked up the nickname "Ike" and changed his first and middle names. An average student, he ranked 61st in his class of 168 and graduated in l915 to become a career soldier. He met Mamie Geneva Doud at his first duty station, and they married on July 1, 1916, on the day he received his promotion to First Lieutenant. They had two sons. One died as a baby, and the other, John Eisenhower followed his father's footsteps as a career officer in the U. S. Army. After several routine assignments, he graduated at the top of his class at the Army General Staff School in Leavenworth, Kansas, and was sent to Army War College in Washington D.C. From there, in l932, he was appointed aide to General Douglas Macarthur and spent four years with him training and building the Philippine army. There, he learned to fly while training the Philippine Air Force. Eisenhower was the second graduate of West Point to be President, after Ulysses S. Grant, and the the eleventh general elected President.

He formulated the Domino Theory to justify his policy of funding France's war in Indochina. However, he refused to assist the French in Dienbienphu, letting the colonial regime fall. Dedication of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Executive Office Building
Remarks by Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz , Washington, DC, Tuesday, May 7, 2002. President Bush; Secretary [of State] Powell; [GSA] Administrator Perry; Susan Eisenhower and members of the Eisenhower family; distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen. It is an honor to be able to join you today in paying tribute to Dwight David Eisenhower-a man whose courage, dignity and character exemplified the spirit of that "Greatest Generation," which sacrificed so much to preserve peace and freedom for our generation and generations to come. The windows of the Pentagon, where I work, frame a view of the Arlington hillsides where so many of those heroes sleep. Images of that great leader known as "Ike" line the Eisenhower Corridor just outside the Pentagon office of the Secretary of Defense. His is the first face—the face of the young cadet, the Supreme Allied Commander, the President of the United States—that many of us see on the start of our day and which sends us on our way each night. Dwight Eisenhower’s vision, determination and courage to change continues to inspire and serve as a model for us, Mr. President, as we carry out your instructions to transform America’s Armed Forces and prepare for the new and different challenges of the 21st Century.

"melanoma"
In August or September 1944, Eisenhower had a superficial blackish nodule removed from his trunk because it was thought to be a malignant melanoma. Kay Summersby's book mentions an incident involving an "infected cyst," which was the cover story for the operation. The lesion proved to be a seborrheic keratosis, but Eisenhower appears never to have been told this.

Boller [ ] tells this story: One day a White House visitor noticed the President was wearing leather bandages on his left wrist. When Ike explained that he had a mild arthritic condition there, the visitor said he was glad it wasn't serious. "I should say it is serious!" exclaimed Ike indignantly. "It means that I can't play golf!" Was this a manifestation of his Crohn disease?

President Dwight D. Eisenhower on the Nuclear Test Ban,
February 11, 1960 Preface: After two years of U.S.-British-Soviet negotiations that began on October 31, 1958 on the "Discontinuance of Nuclear Weapons Tests," agreement could not be reached, primarily due to differences concerning on-site inspections. On February 11, 1960, the Eisenhower Administration redoubled its efforts by proposing a phased approach to achieving a comprehensive ban. The proposal was endorsed by British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, and with some further modifications, the proposal was accepted by Soviet Premier Krushchev, making it likely that the test ban treaty could be signed at the Paris summit that both President Eisenhower and Premier Krushchev had agreed to attend in May. However, the shoot-down of an American U-2 spy plane over the Soviet Union on May 1st led to an atmosphere of hostility that cut short the Paris summit and the chance for the test ban. The following is President Eisenhower's speech announcing the February 11 proposal: President Eisenhower's News Conference of February 11, 1960

(Portrait) President Dwight D. Eisenhower recognized the importance of intelligence from his days as Supreme Allied Commander in Europe during World War II. During the Eisenhower administration, technological advances enabled CIA to collect information previously unavailable. The U-2 reconnaissance aircraft and CORONA satellite reconnaissance programs both began under Eisenhower, permitting CIA to penetrate the Iron Curtain. CIA began construction of its present headquarters complex in Langley, Virginia, in 1959. In a November ceremony, the President along with his Director of Central Intelligence Allen Dulles laid the cornerstone of the current Original Headquarters Building.
"AMERICA'S FUNDAMENTAL aspiration is the preservation of peace. To this end we seek to develop policies and arrangements to make the peace both permanent and just. This can be done only on the basis of comprehensive and appropriate information. "In war nothing is more important to a commander than the facts concerning the strength, dispositions, and intentions of his opponent, and the proper interpretation of those facts. In peacetime the necessary facts are of a different nature. They deal with conditions, resources, requirements, and attitudes prevailing in the world. They and their correct interpretation are essential to the development of policy to further our long-term national security and best interests. To provide information of this kind is the task of the organization of which you are a part.

On January 20, Franklin D. Roosevelt became the first U.S. president sworn into office in January. It was his second of four inaugurations; the first had been held fours years earlier on March 4, 1933. Roosevelt's first inauguration had been shadowed by the onset of the Great Depression. Within a week of taking office, the new President had declared a Federal Bank Holiday. Roosevelt's Second Inaugural Address was optimistic about the gains that had been made during his first administration, while acknowledging that much more was needed. In his speech he shared his vision of the nation's potential and challenged Americans to continue in a united effort to address poverty. Let us ask again: Have we reached the goal of our vision of that fourth day of March 1933? Have we found our happy valley? . . .

Dwight David Eisenhower Dwight David Eisenhower was the U.S. President from 1952 to 1960. President Eisenhower announced during his first term "I am conservative when it comes to economic problems but liberal when it comes to human problems. Eisenhower was a great President but a Republican one so in the years between 1953 and 1960 the budget was unbalanced in 5 out of 8 years, and the national debt increased by roughly $20 billion. The election of Eisenhower to the Presidency in 1952 had signaled a change in the prevailing weather of American politics - a return in effect, to Republican "normalcy" after 20 years of Democratic activism. The domino theory: "You have a row of dominos set up," Eisenhower explains to a press conference, "you knock over the first one, and what will happen to the last one is that it will go over very quickly." "If Indo-China passes into the hands of the communists" he told a doubting Winston Churchill, "the ultimate effect on our and your global strategic position... could be disastrous".
