Dwight David Eisenhower was born in Denison, Tex., on Oct. 14, 1890. His ancestors lived in Germany and emigrated to America, settling in Pennsylvania, early in the 18th century. His father, David, had a general store in Hope, Kans., which failed. After a brief time in Texas, the family moved to Abilene, Kan. After graduating from Abilene High School in 1909, Eisenhower did odd jobs for almost two years. He won an appointment to the Naval Academy at Annapolis, but was too old for admittance. Then he received an appointment in 1910 to West Point, from which he graduated as a second lieutenant in 1915. He did not see service in World War I, having been stationed at Fort Sam Houston, Tex. There he met Mamie Geneva Doud, whom he married in Denver on July 1, 1916, and by whom he had two sons: Doud Dwight (died in infancy) and John Sheldon Doud. Eisenhower served in the Philippines from 1935 to 1939 with Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Afterward, Gen. George C. Marshall, the army chief of staff, brought him into the War Department's General Staff and in 1942 placed him in command of the invasion of North Africa. In 1944, he was made Supreme Allied Commander for the invasion of Europe. After the war, Eisenhower served as army chief of staff from Nov. 1945 until Feb. 1948, when he was appointed president of Columbia University.

The Early Years
Dwight Eisenhower was born in Dennison, Texas. He grew up in a poor family. He was educated in local public schools, and graduated from Abilene High School in 1909. Eisenhower was interested in attending the Naval Academy, but was told that he was too old (he had just passed his 20th birthday) and was ineligible. Instead, he went the US Military Academy at West Point. He was an average student, graduating 64th out of 164 students. Upon his graduation, Eisenhower was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He served throughout the war within the United States borders, rising to the temporary rank of lieutenant colonel. Between the World Wars, Eisenhower held various assignments, rising to the rank of Brigadier General in September, 1941. Soon after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Eisenhower was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff for war plans. He then became Chief of the General Staff - Operations Division. In June 1942, he was appointed Commander of US Forces in Europe. In that capacity, he led the US invasion of North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and then, finally, the US invasion of Normandy. Upon his return to the US in November 1945, he was named Army Chief of Staff. He resigned from the Army in 1948. From 1948 until 1950, he was President of Columbia University. From 1951 until 1953 he served as the first Commander of NATO.

Dwight Eisenhower (1890-1969)
General Dwight David Eisenhower became chief of staff of the United States Army, commander of NATO, and the thirty-fourth president of the United States. As a military leader he led the Allied troops in the European Theater to victory during World War II . As president from 1953-1961, his principal achievement was the maintenance of world peace during the crisis-filled 1950s. His domestic policy record is mixed. While an expanding economy made the postwar era a prosperous one for many Americans, Eisenhower's failures to act decisively against Senator Joseph McCarthy's anti-communist investigations and his lackluster commitment to civil rights scarred his policy legacy. Born in Denison, Texas, Eisenhower spent his childhood in Abilene, Kansas. After graduating from West Point in 1915, he embarked on a military career that initially promised nothing more than backwater assignments and slow promotion. Nevertheless, Eisenhower was an excellent manager and a committed officer who was highly regarded by his superiors.

American President Dwight David Eisenhower, 1890-1969
America's 34th President, Dwight David Eisenhower, one of 7 sons of a poor Kansas family rose to lead one of history's largest armed forces and later a nation. Having commanded the Allied Forces during World War II, served as the first Supreme Commander of NATO and guided America to peace by ending the Korean War, Dwight D. Eisenhower died in his 8th year of retirement on March 28th, 1969. David Dwight Eisenhower was born in Denison, Texas in 1890, the 3rd of 7 sons of David Eisenhower and his wife Ida Stover, a deeply religious couple who moved their family to Abilene, Kansas, soon after the birth of their 3rd son. Named for his father who was a mechanic, Eisenhower was called Dwight David to eliminate confusion, and all the Eisenhower boys were tagged "Ike" by their father in much the way they might have been called "pal". The Eisenhowers were extremely poor and all of the sons worked as soon as they were able, beginning with house chores and labor in the gardens that fed the large family until they were old enough for outside jobs. Dwight excelled at sports and showed small interest in school, though he was enthralled by history and managed to be an average student despite his schedule of jobs and sports. He maintained through life a passion for golf, and as President had squirrels "Banned from the White House" after he discovered their nut burying wreaked havoc on his putting green.

Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) served as supreme commander to Allied forces during World War II, and led the armies to victory. His popularity secured him election as the 34th President of the United States, the first Republican President in 20 years. During World War I, Eisenhower (nicknamed "Ike" as a boy) served at several military training camps, establishing himself as a first-rate organizer and trainer of men. He spent two years as executive officer to Gen. Fox Conner, military commander at Camp Gaillard in the Panama Canal Zone. With Conner's help, Eisenhower was admitted to the Command and General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. In 1926, he graduated first in his class of 275, going on to attend the Army War College in Washington, D.C. He advanced in his career, holding various posts, including aide to General Douglas MacArthur, then Chief of Staff of the United States Army. Going with MacArthur when the General was named military adviser to the Commonwealth of the Philippines in 1935, Eisenhower helped establish the Philippine Air Force and the Philippine Military Academy. He obtained a pilot's license at age 47. In March 1941, Eisenhower became a full colonel, subsequently made chief of staff of the Third Army, headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, then promoted to brigadier general. Considered an expert on the Philipines, he was called to the War Department following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Promoted to major general, he was named chief of the Operations Division of the General Staff. As the Army's top planner, he prepared strategies for the European theater of operations, and in June 1942, was given command of the U.S. Forces in Europe. He went on to become Allied commander in the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, and Italy, and demonstrated outstanding skills in the management of large-scale operations.

Most people have heard of his leadership of Allied invasions of North Africa and France during World War II, command of NATO's armed forces, and service as president of the United States from 1953 to 1961. What is in question here is this: was Ike a Texan, where he was born, or a Kansan, where he grew to young adulthood before going off to West Point in 1911?

Over the next 25 years, he served at posts around the world and steadily rose through the Army ranks. When the United States entered World War II after Pearl Harbor, Eisenhower became one of the Allies' foremost military strategists. As commander of U.S. forces in Europe, he planned the invasions of Northern Africa (1942), Sicily and Italy (1943). Promoted to Allied commander in chief, he directed the Normandy invasion (June 1944) and the brutal year-long campaign through Europe which led to the German surrender. In December, 1944, the Army made him a five-star general, its highest rank.
Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) After the war, he briefly headed the U.S. occupation forces in Germany, then returned to Washington to serve as Army chief of staff. In 1948, he retired from active military duty and became president of Columbia University. Two years later, he returned to military leadership as commander of NATO forces in Europe. In 1952, both political parties courted the extremely popular war hero as a possible presidential candidate. He opted to run as a Republican, easily won the election and served two terms. As President, he forged a quick truce in the Korean War in 1953 and later pursued international disarmament agreements, albeit with little success. He also adopted a hardline anti-communist stance, using military aid and occasionally U.S. troops to counter Soviet expansionism and to undermine leftist movements around the world. In domestic policy, he strove to remain nonpartisan and exerted little direction.
