Description: This manual is a collection of energy education activities that are written and organized to be used either as a unit on energy or as individual activities to complement existing curricula. The focus is on conservation and renewables because these important aspects of energy education have not received as much curricular attention as the more "traditional" sources of energy. SUBJECTS: Virtually every discipline is addressed in these activities. Studying energy lends itself well to both problem-solving and critical thinking. Because energy is something that permeates every aspect of life, it can be wonderful motivator for getting students engaged in their projects in all the traditional disciplines.

    http://sln.fi.edu/tfi/units/energy/windguide.html
Educators throughout the country know The Franklin Institute Science Museum for its innovative teaching resources, both inside the museum and beyond its walls. Perhaps you have already used one of our units of study to teach science in your classroom. Our units of study are designed to stimulate critical thinking about the topic by both you and your students. Hands-on science with inquiry-based facilitation should motivate your students to achieve their goals. We have made our unit for Investigating Wind Energy available for you to use on your own. The activities take an inquiry approach. The series of activities is designed to be done in order, with each building on the previous. However, if you face time constraints, each activity can stand alone. Background The air of our atmosphere moves in many directions and at varying speeds. It can be as gentle as a spring breeze or as dangerous as a tornado. But did you ever wonder about wind? What forces cause air to move? What would Earth's environment be like without the global and local circulation of wind? Air is a fluid which moves in circuits, powered by unequal heating of large masses of air. As the Earth's surface is warmed differentially, the air above these surfaces absorbs different amounts of heat. Warmer air rises while cool air sinks which creates the environment for flowing air movement. Winds flow across parallels of latitude, taking heat from equatorial regions to polar regions. This equalizing process causes wind and is of major importance in determining the environments for life on land, global as well as local weather patterns, and a clean, inexpensive source of energy for humans.

"Healing and Teaching: Three Forms of AlternativeHealing and their Implications for Teaching"
    by Gerald Grow
    Available: http://www.longleaf.net/ggrow
Energy Healing This approach to healing is based on the view that a special energy moves through all thingsa life energy that is the creative impetus for the universe, for all matter, and for the moment to moment feelings of each human being. This energy moves in pulsating rhythms that make up the seasons, the stages of the life cycle, the developmental phases of growth, the tidal rhythms of breath, the drumbeat of the heart, and the vibratory dance of the smallest particles inside each cell. Seen in terms of energy, the body consists of
    • energy centers (chakras),
    • energy pathways (meridians), and
    • energy fields (auras).

According to this school of thought, when energy circulates freely, people are healthy, happy, in touch with themselves, in direct energy-level communication with one another, and in tune with the universe. This energy has been called many names"magnetism" in the early 19th century by Mesmer. The Yogic name for it is "prana." In Taoism and acupuncture, it is known by the Chinese term "chi" or "qi" (Japanese "ki"). Wilhelm Reich called it "orgone."
Each theory of healing has an explanation for the nature of human difficulty and disease. In this theory, for a multitude of reasons, life-energy readily becomes blocked in human beings. The channels through which it flows can be stopped up, weakening the energy in one part of the body, building it to excessive levels in another.

  • Pupils team up in pairs or small groups. One pupil holds onto a colour picture showing predicted global climate and environment change in the year 2050. Others in the group have a plain template map of the world. The pupil with the colour picture must NOT let the others see. The pupil with the coloured map must describe it to the other pupils in as much detail as possible. Remember the pupil with the colour picture must NOT let the others see their map. The pupils with the black and white map should try to reproduce the coloured map using felt-tips or colouring pencils.

It is easy to use and is designed so that the introductory activities teach students how to proceed. An exciting feature is that, with the addition of a video camera and a video capture board, students can shoot their own movies and use them with the program. They can take and analyze different measurements from the home video using the wide variety of graphs and tables provided in the program. Teachers, too, can make use of this feature and develop authentic activities for students to work on independently in groups. "
