FOR STUDENT GROUPS: At the Aldo Leopold Nature Center, we continue Aldo Leopold's legacy by teaching students that the land is a complex organism to be loved, cared for, studied, and understood. School programs focus on learning-by-doing and use simple equipment. Our experienced naturalists work with teachers or group leaders to plan specific activities. Groups are kept small, tour length is up to 1.5 hours, and activities can be tailored to fit your group's special interests and needs. School Field Trip Programs We work with teachers to ensure that trips to the Nature Center are an integral part of your child's education. Throughout the year, we offer grade- and topic- specific programs from pond ecology to winter survival. For program descriptions and registration information click here:

To Netnews Homepage Previous Next Index ... Table of Contents The Destiny of the Nations - Spiritual Life in the New Age The seventh ray is one of the direct lines along which this first ray energy can travel and here again is another reason for its appearance at this time, because, in the releasing of the life into the new and improved forms, the old ways of living, of culture and of civilization have to be destroyed or modified. This is, all of it, the work of the first Ray of Will expressing itself predominantly at this present time through the seventh Ray of Organization and Relationship. When we studied the sixth ray, we considered first of all the effect of the ray upon the work and training, the life and the plans of the disciple, conditioning as it inevitably must his activities and life output. Then we considered the motivating principle of desire in this connection and finally touched upon the three modes of the prevalent ray activity. Let us follow the same procedure now, thus gaining some idea of the relationship between the sixth and the seventh rays and the manner in which the potency of the sixth ray has prepared humanity for the imminent happenings with which it is faced. White magic - as I would have you remember - is [123] concerned with the unfoldment of the soul in form and its gaining needed experience thereby. It is not concerned with direct work upon the form but with the indirect influence of the soul, functioning in any form in every kingdom in nature as it brings the form under its control, thereby effecting needed and developing changes in the apparatus of contact. The white magician knows that when the proper and correct ray stimulation is applied to the center which we call the soul in any form but not to the form itself, that then the soul, thus stimulated, will do its own work of destruction, of attraction, of rebuilding and of a consequent renewed life manifestation. This is true of the soul of man, of the soul of a nation and of the soul of humanity itself. Bear this in mind, for I have here stated a basic and fundamental rule by which all white magic is agelessly governed.

here are thousands of buildings in this country, with millions of people in them who have no telephones, no cable television, and no reasonable prospect of broadband services. They're called schools," said Reed E. Hundt, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission in a New York Times interview on December 6, 1993. Many students today are not getting the technological information in the classroom that they need to meet the demands of the future. To combat this problem, DOE's Office of Science Education and External Relations at ORNL has created the Oak Ridge Regional Education Center. The center offers year-round, hands-on learning and research opportunities for students and teachers from elementary school through college using the most up-to-date computer equipment. Several years ago, DOE named several national laboratories, including ORNL, as science education centers. The Oak Ridge Regional Education Center was built in January 1993. The center interacts with numerous regional groups, including the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Appalachian Regional Commission, and the Appalachia Education Laboratory. DOE is committed to using its highly trained technical staff and advanced facilities to strengthen science and mathematics education nationally. New partnerships are strengthening the center's focus on national education goals and on education reform within the Southeast. Support for these partnerships includes a major new focus on computing and communications technology for educational applications.

Safety Electric and Magnetic Fields How Does Electricity Get to Your Home? PowerHouse ... Conservation Danger around us Take a few minutes to learn about electric power line safety. It may help prevent injuries and even death. Most people give little attention to the overhead power lines that string our streets and crisscross our communities. But these power lines can be fatal. Transmission lines often carry 345,000 volts of electricity, and even lower voltage distribution lines that bring electricity directly to consumers and businesses are extremely dangerous. While your power company takes great care to place power lines out of reach, people may come in close contact with them as they go about daily activities. By taking a few minutes to read the following information, you may prevent serious injury or even death. Electricity fundamentals
First, it is important to understand a few basics about electricity:
  • Electricity is always seeking a path to ground or earth. If you become part of that path to ground, you are in danger. Electricity travels best through conductors, which carry current. The best conductors are metal, such as copper and aluminum. Water is an excellent conductor and so are people.

‘Adding value to the curriculum’ by Lynne Bianchi Article published in the Times Educational Supplement, December 2000 Why do you teach? What do you see as the true value of education? It doesn’t take long for these questions to stimulate a response, but then ask yourself whether you feel that what is happening in the classroom matches up with what you believe. Does how and what you teach really help students perform to their fullest potential? Will how you teach help them succeed when they leave your classroom? Over the past decade the number of publications that discuss the need for youngsters to be more creative, innovative and dynamic has multiplied. Thinking skills, enquiry skills and reasoning skills have become the buzz words for educational reform. Engaging and motivating students is once again being recognised as a significant issue. Are these issues so radically different to that which we have always valued in education? Does how we teach regularly address these points? The Centre for Science Education at Sheffield Hallam University is undertaking a research study to explore the use and development of Personal Capabilities through the science curriculum. The Personal Capabilities have been identified by teachers and employers and supported by research, to be a set of generic capabilities considered influential in the social, academic and professional lives of individuals. They focus on verbal communication, creativity, self management, team working, problem solving, critical thinking, social intelligence, tenacity, self motivation and self image. Teachers have viewed these to be important outcomes from education. However, they have expressed concern over the extent to which they are promoted in regular subject teaching.

Recognizing Stress
Most people are exposed to much higher levels of stress than they realize.
Your Stress Scale
A self-test you can use to determine how much stress your are really facing.
Brain Chemical Messengers
Brain cells "talk to each other" by means of chemical messengers. When a person is exposed to too much stress, chemical communication in the brain begins to fail. When these messengers fail, a person suffers from sleep disturbance, aches and pains, depression and anxiety. This condition is called OVERSTRESS.
Three Happy Messengers
Three brain messengers control your sleeping, your energy levels, and your feelings of pain and pleasure.
Pick-Me-Up's
Chemicals from the grocery store shelf, as well as drugs, can temporarily restore your brain messenger function but not completely, and not for long. These substances are called "Pick-Me-Up's." Pick-Me-Up's are the WRONG way to handle overstress.

http://ethel.as.arizona.edu/~collins/astro/subjects/convection1.html
Some Thoughts on How to Start Teaching About Convection
A discussion of convection may not be very useful until you remind students about basic concepts and the differences between convection, conduction, and radiative heat transfer. A key concept is that heat is molecular or atomic motion, and that heat flows from hotter source to cooler source through equilibrium forming processes. In other words, heat rather than cold is the quantity of choice to follow. An analogy to the idea of heat as motion is a crowd of swimmers in the ocean. When a big wave hits them, they are moved and some of the energy of the wave is transferred to them. Similarly, waves of radiant energy can transfer energy to molecules. You might start with a discussion of the heat produced by a fire in a fireplace? Where does the energy released in burning go? (Discuss radiation, convection, and conduction) This can lead to a discussion of the difference between convection, conduction, and radiative heat transfer. All of these heat transfer processes are valuable to discuss in an astronomy or earth science class. Families in Action is a video-based program with a dual purpose:
  • to teach parents the skills needed to guide their children through the challenging teen years
  • to help teens learn communication and negotiation techniques they can use at home, at school, and throughout their lives
    • communicate effectively
    • get along better
    • avoid problems (including drugs, sex, violence and alcohol)
Families in Action is Two Programs in One! The Families in Action program can be implemented in two ways:
    • use both the Parent and Teen Components to offer a program for parents and teens together
    • use the Teen Component alone for groups of preteens or teens (without parents present) Both components contain video from the Active Parenting of Teens
Two components = One flexible program Families in Action: Parent Component is designed for use with the Teen Component. The materials in the parent program offer much of the information found in

Send an E-Card INDOOR PLAY of 4 During the winter when the weather is bleak and children can't spend as much time outside, parents are usually the ones drained of energy, says Mary Jo Zimmer, a pediatrician at the Milwaukee Medical Clinic. Toddlers continue moving, climbing and exploring. "We have a harder time during the winter," Zimmer says of adults. "Toddlers are on the go from the time they get up, and they don't stop until they collapse at night." Rose Wegner knows that too well. Her 3-year-old son, Teddy, spends most of his summer outside running and playing with neighborhood children. But on frigid winter days, that energy is released by running around the house and climbing on the furniture. "It's so confining to a little guy," Wegner says of staying inside. "You can feel so cooped up in the house."

    Good stuff:
Positive energy and the round file Roger Chrisman, 29 June 1998 There is a good deal of littering on campus, here at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. A bird tells me it is an expression of opprobrium from the students towards the intellectual apathy from their teachers and administrators. This didn't translate nicely in my heart, since it put me on the side lacking intellectual vigor. It stressed me and then depressed me. And so I though: clean classrooms set a positive attitude and I believe in positive energy. All the classrooms in my university have (1) refuse in the desks and on the floor, and (2) no trash cans. So I decided to make my classroom a positive example and bought two plastic waste baskets, one for each end of my rather large classroom. Students gradually began putting waste into the round file, rather than into their desks or on the floor. Not always of course. It was a hard habit to get into because there were no waste baskets in the other classrooms. But perhaps the larger half of the crumpled papers, food wrappers, plum pits etc. in my classroom ended up in the waste baskets. I collected the rest into the baskets at the end of the day and dumped them in the trash can down the hall. We had done this for two semesters. Then lo, guess what happened yesterday! I saw a bunch of students, with a bright stack of colorful plastic round files (waste baskets), taking signatures on a poster in front of their dormitory! One of them slotted me and shouted for me to come over and sign this poster. She had been in a class I had substituted in last September (and had brought my two waste baskets along with me to) and she had now bought a whole stack of colorful plastic waste baskets with her own money, one for each classroom in our teaching building!
