Development Challenges
  • India is the world's sixth largest and second fastest growing producer of greenhouse gases. Two-thirds of city dwellers lack sewerage; one-third lack potable water. India grows equivalent of another New York City every year in its urban population. By the year 2000, more than 350 million Indians will live in cities. In 15 years, more than half of Indians will be urban dwellers; 1/3 will be slum dwellers and squatters.

USAID technical assistance in the states of Punjab, Haryana, and West Bengal is helping establish State Electricity Regulatory Commissions to improve power sector efficiency. USAID recommendations have led to the reduction of 2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions by power plants of the National Thermal Power Corporation and by the Gujarat Electricity Board. The signing of a new partnership agreement between leading Indian and U.S power utilities and regulatory agencies provides a long-term mechanism for the transfer of U.S. technology and experience. The Energy Training Program also provides training for ongoing regulatory reform and energy efficiency.

Objective
Students will examine and learn about factors that need to be considered when performing outdoor activites, and what they can do to prepare themselve for them.
Materials
  • paper
  • writing utensils
Method
  • Split students into groups of 3 or 4 and ask each group to brainstorm factors that they have to consider when performing outdoor activities (eg: thirst, hunger, cold, heat, sun, rain, rocky terrain, first aid, animals...)
  • After the lists are generated, ask groups to exchange lists with another group and decide some precautions that can be taken to be prepared for the factors that they listed. (eg: thirst-bring a water bottle, hunger-bring snacks, cold-bring a jacket, heat-dress in layers, sun-bring sunblock, rain, bring a hat, rocky terrain-wear hikers, first-aid-bring a first-aid kit, animals-wear bear bells, make noise, do research on the animals you may come in contact and how to prevent an altercation...)
  • Have each group present their lists to the class.

On-Line Mountain Environment Activities
Information-Rich Problem Solving Activities Using Integrated Technology
Overview of Lessons and Investigations Learners will explore on-line resources that provide current mountain environment information. The emphasis of these inquiry-based activities is on using information to investigate scientific questions, creating models, and making predictions. Many of these hands-on activities require learners to record electronic information over several days, share data with learners at remote locations, and conduct analysis using image processing technology. Activites have clearly defined learning outcomes and are segregated into four levels: novice, intermediate, advanced, and expert. These levels are more closely aligned with computer experience than cognitive levels. For a preview, a Quick Tour of the activities has been created. There are also on-line resources tools , and background materials available. Novice Level Activities

JCCU Released Report on Environment Activities (November.5. 2002) On September 9, JCCU released the results of their 2001 survey on Co-op Environment Related Activities (Co-op 2002 Environmental Report). Beginning in 1999, every year JCCU has conducted a survey on the environment related activities at various Co-ops throughout the nation. In fact each year 100 different Co-op societies participate in the survey. The results of this survey indicate that throughout Japan various Co-ops engage in a variety of environmental preservation activities. These activities include: manufacturing toilet paper from recycled paper, promoting the sale of refillable containers for shampoo and hair rinse, manufacturing and promoting the use of chlorine free food plastic wraps.
Altogether, last year, Co-ops manufactured 44.7 million items totaling 10.29 billion yen worth of merchandise that carry the environment friendly Co-op label. Also, Co-op's home delivery service utilizes about 15,000 vehicles nation wide and Co-op is now attempting to change from diesel-powered vehicles to gasoline and LPG in order to reduce the air pollutants from these vehicles.
Co-op is actively involved in obtaining ISO 14001 status. In fact, in 2001, 40 of the 570 Co-ops nationwide received ISO1400 certification. Another important feature of Co-ops environment management has been the creation of Environment Watchdog Committees composed of elected member representatives, Co-op members, scholars and outside experts. Also at various Co-ops, individual members organized various environment related activities that include: observing and calculating changing pollution levels, observing and measuring water pollution in rain and rivers, activities related to the problems of global warming, promoting trash recycling activities, observing nature and the changing ecosystems and conducting environment education for children. In 2002, twelve Co-ops received award to honor their efforts and activities to protect the environment.
