    A management environment
No undergraduate business degree by itself can teach someone how to be a competent manager: that comes with experience, and then further education. What the Management Studies Tripos will enable you to do is to study the subjects relevant to management and the environment in which the manager operates, whilst still a full-time student. You will gain a sound understanding of the fundamentals of management and various aspects of management practice, and gain practical experience in a real-life context. You will acquire the skills that a good manager needs, including the ability to apply critical analysis to management issues, and an awareness of the responsibilities of managers in an economic, social and environmental context. The value of our course is evident in the successful careers of our graduates. Since its introduction in 1986, students who have taken the Management Studies Tripos have found little problem in finding the type of employment they seek in industry and commerce.

Email this story We get a ton of requests for websites and books that offer an easy introduction the wild, wooly, and wonderful world of Linux. No wonder: Most Linux books for newbies suck. Teach Yourself Linux doesn't. Unlike books that assume you're already familiar with Unix commands, or the basic idea of Linux, Teach Yourself Linux takes the time to explain how the Linux OS works. It doesn't assume you don't need to know the Linux command line. Nor does it simply walk you through the install and quit right when you really need some help.

Friday, 23 February, 2001, 11:27 GMT Did the caveman teach us to queue?
The cult of evolutionary psychology has received another boost with the theory we were born to queue. But, asks Chris Horrie, can caveman behaviour really explain everything we do?
Psychologists have announced that the famously British propensity to stand in a queue has roots stretching back 30,000 years to the behaviour of semi-naked ape-men struggling for survival on the African savannah. According to the theory, early humans who copied the behaviour of others tended to live longer and, therefore, had a better chance of reproducing and passing on the behaviour to later generations. Those who did not, died out.
It's only a small step from going out to kill a wild boar
The queuing claim is only the latest in a welter of theories in the field of evolutionary psychology. In the last few years evolutionary psychology has been used to explain everything from consumer behaviour in supermarkets, to management theory, sexual attractiveness, divorce, war, football, road rage and even a supposed male propensity to rape. According to the theory, people eat too much because, as cavemen, we never knew where the next meal was coming from. Possibly there were Neanderthals who counted the calories, but the chances are they died out during the frequent famines of stone-age life, having failed to build up enough fat.

The events of September 11 brought the need for greater world awareness to the forefront of educational discourse. Now, more than ever, we have to promote the kind of environments where children can learn to think critically about the world around them and work proactively to bring about positive change in their local and global communities. This website builds on the global issues explored during the day-long Teach In hosted by Teachers College in January 2002.

    Overview
In our first year, the Games-to-Teach Project focused on designing a set of 10 conceptual frameworks of educational games in AP / Introductory college-level math, science, and engineering education. The goal of this exercise was to develop a vision of how games could be used to support learning, as well as to research the issues behind developing and marketing next-generational games. In 2002-2003, we have begun work on games to be used in the social sciences and humanities. Each of these conceptual frameworks are designed to:
    • Inspire innovation in next-generation educational gaming Provide concrete models of state-of-the-art educational gaming Suggest a range of gameplay experiences to expand notions of educational gaming Be candidates for future development Demonstrate market potential.
