More on Climate Control in Museums
The following three articles and announcement address the issue of climate control guidelines in museums. The articles by the CAL group and Steven Weintraub were solicited by the Newsletter. Barbara Appelbaum's is a slightly revised version of her posting on the Conservation DistList on CoOL. The CAL announcement was likewise first posted on the DistList. Four articles on the same subject appeared in the January, 1995 issue of the Newsletter (vol.17, no.1, pp. 19-28) It seems that a sentence from the introduction to those articles remains true today "This is, obviously, a subject of great concern to conservation and one about which thoughtful professionals have not reached a consensus."
A Discussion of Research on the Effects of Temperature and Relative Humidity on Museum Objects
by Charles S. Tumosa, Marion F. Mecklenburg, David Erhardt, and Mark H. McCormick-Goodhart Research into the effects of environment (RH and temperature) on materials and structures can be readily divided into three fundamental areas: biological, chemical, and structural. Biological and chemical effects on materials have been studied in great detail since the 19th century. The degradation of proteins, carbohydrates, and other organic materials has been of interest with regard to both the deterioration of materials and industrial processes. That chemical changes are only part of the picture is apparent if one considers that chemically wood and sawdust are equivalent. Clearly structural (mechanical) considerations need to be addressed in defining cultural objects.

http://www.oas.org/culture/series4_f.html
THE ROLE OF MUSEUMS AND HERITAGE INSTITUTIONS IN THE PROMOTION AND PRESERVATION OF THE CULTURAL PATRIMONY PROTECTION OF CULTURAL PROPERTY Museums, Tourism and Sustainability. These institutions have the ability to lobby, inform and advise governments on relevant issues, while at the same time educating the public and implementing activities at the grassroots level. Effective distribution of available information has been a key problem in this battle. However, their ability to define and articulate major concepts give museums the potential for effective input at the level of stakeholder involvement in environmental protection. Caribbean museums can also be effective facilitators to the process of building consensus on sustainability, based on a commitment to transparency and inclusiveness. Regional institutions can also provide knowledge, and deliver expertise (including the cultural and social permutations, and accessibility in its broadest context). In effect, engendering a participatory approach to managing the environment. Next...

Champaign, IL The National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the St. Louis Science Center, the Illinois State Museum in Springfield, and the Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul announced today the confirmation of a three-year, $1.7 million grant from the National Science Foundation to establish the Mississippi RiverWeb SM Museum Consortium. NCSA's share of the grant will be about $722,000. The RiverWeb Museum Consortium will incorporate powerful computer simulations and the latest advances in scientific visualization technologies into museum exhibits so that adults, families, and school children can better comprehend the river's rich and complex physical and biological systems. Each of the three museums brings to the consortium expertise in communicating scientific information to the public through interactive exhibits and other educational tools. NCSA brings its expertise in computer visualization and simulation technologies and advanced computing, giving the general public a chance to experience technologies usually restricted to research settings. The consortium's unique combination of partners will demonstrate how advanced computing applications can enhance the hands-on learning that takes place in science museums.
